Feeling a little comic-booky and only DC though.

Books I have read include works of Alan Moore and Frank Miller's Supermans and Batmans. Kingdom Come, What's so funny about truth, justice, and the American way, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Red Son, Alex Ross' DC works, Injustice.

And at the risk of sounding way too nerdy. Any books after the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Because I am not fond of the old Pre-90s Art Style. I am just fond of the art work 90s and onward to the present day.

Oops, realize that TC doesn't want pre-1990 suggestions. Hrmmm. That's when Perez's Wonder Woman was around. John Byrn's Superman. Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. Crisis on Infinite Earths. Worth checking out.

I'd go with Gotham Central [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_Central] (a look at how the police force of Gotham functions and works without, with or around Batman himself, dealing with politics, prejudices and the occasional supervillain), The Nail [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JLA:_The_Nail_series] (alternate universe story about a world where Kal-El didn't become Superman and what kind of impact that has on the Justice League) and Tower of Babel [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JLA:_Tower_of_Babel] (more or less the originator of all those "But Batman could beat anyone with enough planning!" ideals and frankly still the best take on it)

Meaning you have read the Crisis books?
By limiting yourself to post 1990 I am wondering have you read the Alan Moore Swampthing, Wonder Woman, John Byrn's Superman reboot? Was Miller's Batman Year One in the 1980s? That's some of the best 1980s DC I read and pre dates your 1990 requisite and I think you would enjoy this stuff and hope you read it.

EDIT: PS: that's when Teen Titan books were off the hook too

All Star Superman - though the art style may not appeal, but it is within the required time bubble

Arkham Asylum - oh, it seems the game did have a direct source to follow

The New Frontier - interesting style of art there

Rebirth - got nothing here

Final Crisis - Ominous...

-

granted, having never read any of these, it may seem a most dubious recommendation to entertain. buuuuut, if you think about it, can you get any less biased than someone who has no idea or investment towards any of them....Eh? Ehhhh? the thought logic is "hey, what would I recommend myself and what would that self react positively to on purely surface level impressions?" some projection was necessary to facilitate this of course, but the job is done! no need for thanks, it is my duty to recontribute to society's community!

Of the ones I've read, I'd recommend the Bombshells series [https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/DC_Bombshells]. It's an alt universe set in WWII following the paths of period versions of DC (mostly) women, both heroes and villains. If you're interested in a more... well... interesting version of The Dark Knight Rises, I recommend the No Mans Land Batman series [https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Batman:_No_Man%27s_Land].

Some good one-off Batman books (since most of my DC comics are Batman):

- The Black Mirror [https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Batman:_The_Black_Mirror] is a particularly dark set of tales discussing Gotham's pitch-black darkness that pervades everything.

-There's also the disturbing and dreamlike illustrations that put
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth [https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Arkham_Asylum:_A_Serious_House_on_Serious_Earth] near the top of most recommendations. The book loosely inspired the plot to the original Arkham Asylum video game, and I highly recommend reading a copy that includes the original script for the story in the back with production notes.

- For more of a slice of life of the kind of person that is forced to live in Batman's Gotham, I recommend Arkham Asylum: Madness [https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Arkham_Asylum:_Madness], which follows a brutal double shift of a nurse at the aforementioned institution.

Grant Morrison's run on Animal Man is the other post-crisis high concept revamp of an old idea, along with Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run and Neil Gaiman's total re-imagining of Sandman. Gaiman did an excellent Black Orchid miniseries around that time as well.

Scott Snyder's Batman run is really good and you can get them in collected volumes. Espescially Court of Owls and Death of the Family is incredible. I really like his take on the Joker as some kind of Lovecraftian entity and the overt horror vibes of the story. Joker by Azzarello is the opposite and puts the character in a more grounded setting. Don't think I have to mention The Killing Joke which takes a similar more grounded approach and remains one of the best graphic novels of all time.

Arkham Asylum Living Hell is also really good and I think I like it somewhat more than Serious House. Batman Vampire is another one of my all-time faves. It collects Red Rain, Bloodstorm and Crimson Mist and puts Batman in the Victorian era(similarly as Gotham by Gaslight, another phenomenal one) on the lookout for Dracula and eventually Batman becoming a vampire himself. It's by Mounch, Kelly and Jones who also made a fantastic Batman run in the '90s.

Texas author Joe R. Lansdale has written some fantastic books and his works have been featured in a couple of stellar tv or movie adaptations. And DC had him author a stretch of Jonah Hex that I quite liked. He also wrote a couple of really great episodes of Batman the Animated Series.

Geoff John's Green Lantern run is fantastic. It starts with Green Lantern: Rebirth (not to be confused with the DC Rebirth initiative)

Long Halloween / Dark Victory / Haunted Knight / Catwoman When in Rome by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale is quality ass Batman. Grant Morrison's run is also right in your preferred time period and considered to be a classic. Hush for another very famous Batman story.

Tomasi's Rebirth Superman is some of the best superman stuff in a long time.

Grayson - Dick Grayson as an international Superspy

I've been reading Detective since Rebirth and it's one of DC's best books
