I'm finally legal drinking age as of today and I have managed to avoid drinking anything alcoholic for 21 years. Well, okay a couple of sips of wine here and there but no one counts those, right?
Any recommendations for someone who hasn't a proper drink yet?

Try everything. And I don't mean down the bottle every time, I mean take a sip and see what you like (very easy to do at house parties where there usually is a lot of choice). I started with beer (Desperados and Guinness), then later my taste changed (or rather I got sick of these foul tasting drinks) so I drink fruity drinks now (Kopparberg or any other drinks of the same kind). Basically, find what you like and stick with it, and of course, always in moderation. I'll never understand the mentality that a good night is one you can't remember.

Unlike Karma, I can't do things like Kopparberg, sweet drinks make me ill. But if fruit cider is something that interests you, Reorderlig are pretty popular and do an interesting range of products.
I wouldnt recommend anything like that for prolonged sessions they are quite sickening after about 3 or 4. They are nice when its just a few drinks outside in the sun but anymore than that prepare to feel bloated or have the ominous purple sick

The main thing to remember is to drink becuase you enjoy the taste, ot to get drunk. And have fun!
This is poor advice. Drink until you are absolutely demolished then drink some more

Im going to assume you are from america so i dont think cidre is pretty big over there. Id say a good beginner level drink (other than cidre) is probably a vodka lemonade or as Joe Q said a rum and coke. SoCo and lemonade or coke is also a good choice and so is disoranno (sp?) and coke. A mojito is also a pretty good beginners drink and also quite strong

Ps. Im just trying to think of "girly" drinks without going too flamboyant. Also stay away from alcopops (pre-mixed alcoholic soft drinks) and dont get into shots until your experience level is up a bit

P.s 2: You probably will throw up if you having an extended drinking session. Dont worry it happens to us all at some point. Just make sure you do it in the toilet

P.s 3: you probably will get a hangover. To make this bearable make sure you drink water after every couple of drinks. Water is free in most bars/clubs so its a no brainer

The thing about cider in the US, is that it refers to a non-alcoholic drink; "Hard Cider" is the alcoholic version. Either way, actually fairly big in some states.

I'd recommend fruity cocktails for taste purposes, but the thing to note about those is that you can't taste the alcohol in them, and can't really be sure how strong they are. For a beginner drinker who isn't sure where his limits are, this can result in getting very, very drunk without being sure why.

It really depends on environment. I would advise starting somewhere "safe" rather than going "Woooo!", running off to a crowded bar/party and attempting to drink all the things, or trying to keep up with people who have been drinking longer.

I will tell you this, speaking as somebody who hasn't been much of a drinker in his young life himself (I am 23, but didn't start drinking until last year), Think of something you want to try, and try that first.

I had beers before and couldn't get into them, but then I got into mixed drinks, and found those are my favorite types of drinks. After that, I tried a White Russian (I saw The Big Lebowski, that's why) and found them toe-curling (read: hard to enjoy).

Then I moved on to Malibu and Coke, and then Jack and Coke, Rum and Coke, and I found what I enjoy.

My advice: Don't drink all of those in one shot, my learning how to drink phase came over two months and only three or four nights (Nights separated by two or three weeks of not drinking, we don't want you to start a habit), and think of something you want to try.

I thought White Russians would have been my thing, but I cannot stand them (Chai Tea and Vodka, on the other hand, is amazing), but Jack and Coke is my drink of choice, and it took me a while to get to that point, so Pick your poison and then be comfortable to try other things, maybe ask responsible drinkers to suggest drinks for you (A lady friend of mine got me to the Malibu/Jack stuff, and that I certainly wouldn't have got to on my own).

This is excellent advice.
A lot of beginners seem to make this mistake. Granted they arent very strong but the quantity of sugar mixed with the alcohol can be pretty brutal (for the same reason caffinated alcohol should be avoided) they are also very easy to drink as they taste just like a soft drink and they are very cheap so you end drinking a lot more

I tend to drink alcopops when my level of drunkenness starts to plateau. They dont get you any drunker but they sustain the level of drunkenness

Also learn how much you can handle. There are literally thousands of variables that effect this, i really dont mean to be sexist here but gender is the biggest factor. On average men can handle more than women (im not saying its always the case but its a good rule of thumb). Height, build, metabolic rate and a lot of other factors come into play but the biggest factor is experience. People in the UK/ireland tend to be able to handle more than americans because we start drinking at 18 (although most people start illegaly at around 16) so weve got 3-5 years on you before you reach a legal age and alcohol is such a huge part of our culture. So youll find these american "frat boys" getting drunk under the table by your average brit

My experience with alcohol is limited, mostly a bunch of "bleah" reactions and one or two positive ones.

I find beer tastes like the inside of a bicycle tire. Friends have assured me this is because I haven't tried the right one, but I taste award-winning beers and get the same impression. I figure it's an acquired taste.

Wine just tastes like what it is: spoiled grape juice. Perhaps I just have an unsophisticated palate, but I think it's more likely that wine and wine tasting are simply bullshit.

I tend to do "girly drinks," things based on fruit, sugar, or chocolate. My personal preference is the White Russian, a mild coffee-cream drink for sipping:
rocks glass
two fingers vodka
one finger Kahlua
three fingers cream or half-n-half

Id also recommend this on the rocks (preferably) or with coke, you can taste the alcohol but the honey takes a bit of the edge off and actually makes it quite pleasant tasting. I wouldnt say the honey masks the flavour, it complements it nicely and there isnt a lot of honey in there either. A lot of people i know that love the old no.7 jack daniels were skeptical (myself included) but they really like it and a lot of people who hate jack daniels like it too

It's not a girly drink, man. This aggression will not stand.

Any coffee-flavored rum-based liqueur will do though, like Tia Maria or Borghetti.
For lack of cream you can also use milk.

Try the Four Horsemen*. It'll scare ya straight...edge.

Oh god that joke was awful.

To give out actual advice though, it's always nice to start with a spirit mixed with something normal. Say, for example, vodka and tonic, coke and rum, etc. Get familiar with it so that you know that drink well, since you can fall back on it when you don't want to get drunk. Also, for the same reason, don't drink daiquiris. Their sweet taste hide the ethanol really well, so it can sneak up on you.

*Tequila + 3 different Whiskies. DO NOT TRY IT. Tequila alone can make you throw up instantly if you're an inexperienced drinker.

Take a few shots of whiskey. You'll either keep drinking or you won't. Vodka can have the same effect.

uh, I would stay away from hard liquor for at least a year. Stick with beer until you have some experience what to expect with alcohol and being drunk. Hard liquor can sneak up on even the most cautious person.

Oh, and stay away from Gin and Tequila.

As long as there's no changaa or russian moonshine then I guess it's cool.

My first drink was Budweiser and I hated it. My second was Miller and I hated it. I've tried for years to get into beer and it still tastes like sweat to me.

Cider is a pretty good first drink. Pretty good full time drink as well.

You could try some Rum/Vodka + mixer if you are looking something a bit stronger that won't kill you.

I first had beer but I didn't really like it and honestly I still don't enjoy it that much.

I'd try something like Rum and Coke/Jack and Coke to start off with. Hard liquor involved but you're diluting it with something that tastes good at the very least and they'll get you drunk all the same.

Do what I did.... Give a (slightly) older mate a fist full of currency and say "Surprise me."

This is also known as "Put a shot of everything on the top shelf in the mug and top it up with beer."

It was an interesting evening.

I drank for the first time about a week ago, I just took a sip of everything I had got a bit tipsy, drank a lot of water and didn't get a hangover, don't know if I'd recommend it since I thought it all tasted horrid but it was something.

Let's see, I started with mostly beer, long drinks and cider. After a while got into the stereotypical stuff like Jägermaister and Jack Daniels, Porthsmouth gin and some Captain Morgan. Hard to imagine someone going all the way to 21 without really drinking outside of some wine with food, but I guess we come from different cultures. What I would suggest if going to a bar and getting some Gin&tonic and Cuba Libre(rum+coke), those are some good easy drinks, but do be careful, for you can't immediately get the sense of how drunk you are, and that can lead to some nasty consequences that might ruin drinking for you for a long time. Personally, I can't wait to be old enough so they let me in legitimate bars. My wallet probably could though.

Start with mixed drinks. Mudslides, Pina Colada's. My personal favorite drink is the white russian.
