Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Now that its a "PSP Essential", its a lot cheaper. Alternatively, wait until later in the year and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. I also back the Crisis Core suggestions, one of my favorite games.
I've never understood Monster Hunter's appeal. And I'm it's target audience!
I think that theres a certain mindset to get into with the games. They can get very grind heavy, and not in the traditional way of it, because you can't tell for definite when you'll finish grinding, due to the random nature of stuff like monster drops. But when you accomplish what you set out to do, be it kill a big monster or finish a new weapon, it gives one of the greatest feelings. Thats MH's appeal in a nutshell.

So, basically, it's a single-player, portable, World of Warcraft? Eh... no thanks. I've been trying to avoid games like that since I managed to quit WoW... for the second time. I really don't need to go through that for a THIRD time.

prinny can i really be a hero? or prinny 2 dawn of operation panties dood. There both epic but very hard games.

note the title of prinny 2 may sound pervy but its not a pervy game what so ever.
Like I said, I'm seriously considering getting Prinny 2.

Or should I start with Prinny 1? Do I NEED to play 1 before two, or does it not matter?
it don't really matter

Probably Crisis Core: Final Fantasy. Haven't played it but I think it's not turn-based.
Be forewarned (addressed to the topic in general, not just you who I quoted); while it has a surprisingly good story, the combat is the most repetitive, mundane shit EVER.

I'm serious: It makes Dynasty Warriors look deep and technical in comparison.
Good idea, but boring execution...HORRIBLY BORING execution.

The fights were amazingly difficult, and I loved the tracking portions. It does have a high learning curve though, especially for a modern game franchise.

However, a combination of boring, epic grind and PAINFUL (as in, literally physically painful) controls forced me to quit. If they just upped the drop rates to sane levels and made it less about the grind, I might have had it in me to finish more hunts. Alas, it's one of those games where the time commitment to doing nothing is just too great to warrant playing it.

I loved the multiplayer to death though. Had two other friends who played along with me.

I like me a good grind. But I need more loot with my grind. That has to be it. Payoffs are few and far between in MH. I don't need immediate gratification, but I need it far more often that MH offers it. Also, the length of many of the fights doesn't help thing. Being able to fight an enemy for a long time, as some of the MH enemies take FOREVER, especially solo, and then get killed out of nowhere, pissed me off.

Its not really anything like WoW. For one thing, it has actual good combat. All the weapons require mastery, all types are balanced, and there is a type of weapon to suit all types of players. Combat against monsters takes place usually against one specific monster each quest, where you must track down and slay or capture it, after which you'll be rewarded with materials and money to make new weapons and armour, and progress through the quests, starting off with small Velociraptor type wyverns, going up to colossal mountain sized dragons. Its also got a really good multiplayer side to it, as you can team up with nearby friends to take on tougher monsters together. The part of it similar to WoW is that you'll want to play it all the time, but at least with this you only need to pay the once XD

I suppose it can be quite slow in terms of satisfaction, but I feel at high levels, any monster kills become quite an accomplishment, especially the high end monsters tat pop up near the end. I find its worth it if you stick it out for a while, until you reach high level stuff.

"It gets better much later" doesn't cut it for me. I gave that game a solid amount of my time. A good 10-15 hours.

Exception goes to the popular example of FF13, which I liked a ton once I unlocked paradigms 2 hours in.

First off, I would say get the first Prinny game before diving into the sequel, to get a feel for what it has to offer. Second, if you can't cope with frustration, I would avoid the game entirely, for it is, and I cannot stress this enough, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHH! dificult. A mix of classic Mega Man, Ghosts n' Goblins and a shard of ceramic tile to the temporal lobe, this game WILL make you weep blood. But once you get the hang of it you should have loads of fun.

Since you mentioned final fantasy, I would also rec. Crisis Core, the prequel to ff7. it plays like kingdom hearts but with a slot machine controlling what summons and limit breaks you use, but it's still awesome. Another good psp rpg is the remake of the legendary Lunar: Silver Star for Sega Saturn. A solid story told in fully animated cut scenes, with a flying cat added in because, what the hell.

and finally, I would pass on to you the gospel of Castlevania: the Dracula x Chronicles. A 3d revamp of the saturn-era Rondo of Blood, plus an unlock-able edition of Symphony of the Night, which is a must-play if ever there was one.

Plus the SotN in X Chronicles has improved voice acting and is based off the Sega Saturn version that never came out in US,which had you get the Holy Goggles from Maria...by kicking her ass

The 2 God of War games for the PSP should be good. If you like fighting games Mortal Kombat: Unchained can be gotten very cheap.

I really like ,, Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?''
You are a god of evil and must build a dungeon with a working ecosystem of monsters dto kill the heroes. it has an insane learningcurve and still manages to be addicting , but has some really, really funny writing. it is full of injokes about (J)rpg-gaming and oldschool visuals.
overall it is in my top 5 of psp-games.

EDIT: it is also downloadable, but i got it in physical form from the store.

Get Crisis Core that game is absolutely awesome in every way.

And if you like the series try getting Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker I found it to be a very good addition to the series.

If you like the Metal Gear Solid series at all, I would really encourage you to pick up Metal Gear Solid: Portabl Ops and Peace Walker. Portable Ops is the direct sequel to MGS 3 and Peace Walker is the sequel to Portable Ops. These are really fun games that are amazing to see on a handheld. And if you REALLY love Metal Gear (or tactical card games) you could try Metal Gear Ac!d, but that's not as polished.

Might have missed it, but I don't think anyone said Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. This is a great game, but from what I understand it's fairly similar to Tactics Ogre which just came out, so maybe one or the other?

Anything else I would recommend has already been mentioned so I'm just reiterating. Disgaea is fun but grindy. Castlevania Dracula X is good (first time I ever played Symphony of the Night was with this game). Good that you're getting Dissidia, that's a great game. Patapon is a ton of fun.
