Alright I am gonna say it...I have never watched Monty Python at all. And no not even The Holy Grial movie aswell.

So time for me to rectify that. So Monty Python in the most basic sense is the Granddaddy to shows like Robot Chicken, and Amanda Show?

The reason I ask of this is because when ever someone makes a reference to the show, it all always flies past my head so I want to know where these references originate. And to see if they can really make me laugh out loud for at least 2-3 mins.

Aside from the legendary Dead Parrot routine (spam[small]*[/small] alert - you're gonna get this one up the wazoo), the single biggest laugh I've ever gotten from that crew has come from the segment on Gangster Grannies.

(Specifically, the phone booth vandalism at 1:28.)

[small]*Incidentally, the modern usage of the word 'spam' comes from another Monty Python skit.[/small]

Well the Dead Parrot routine is legendary, but everyone knows that.

My personal favorite should come as no surprise to the Escapist. The Argument Clinic. I love nothing more than a good argument. Its just so clever, such good word play and delivery.

This is my personal favourite.

I really like this one and don't see it brought up very much.

I also really like the Argument Clinic posted above.

I think a lot of their best stuff was in Life of Brian, myself, though they went more into social satire and religion there.

Who could forget the timeless, legendary classic that is "How Not to be Seen":

I was going to mention the "How Not To Be Seen" sketch, but it appears I have been ninja'd.

So instead I'll put this little gem here:

I'd recommend watching the Holy Grail(and Life of Brian) first. Half of Monty Python references still in use come from these films anyway. And their skits are sometimes hit and miss, depending on who you ask.

Anyway, here are three that i picked:

Already seen some recommendations I would make, but I also heartily recommend the entire "The Queen Will Be Watching" episode.

My favourite by far is the dead parrot sketch. I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned it yet.

A lot of their sketches bleed into each other and have recurring characters and gags that keep showing up throughout the episode, so it's best to watch the episodes in full. This is one of my favourites:

As for self contained sketches, this one's a classic:

And finally, a nice short one, which is brilliant in its simplicity:

OK. Let's go to the main goal. Some of the most referenced Monty Python jokes come from The Holy Grial movie.

Context: King Arthur's travel is interrupted when they find a fight to the death between the Black Knight and unknown knight; with the Black Knight as the victor.

And not so referenced, but one of my favorites.

I advice you to see The Meaning of Life. It is not the best of the movies, mostly because it feels like a string of sketches put together... but precisely because of that, it works as a self contained introduction to their sense of humor.

One of their most surreal and odd sketches is the Spam sketch.

Fun fact: the meaning of "spam" as a verb actually comes from this skit. Watch it and you'll know why.

Also, if you have a stomach for gross out humor, you can't go wrong with Mr Creosote from The Meaning of Life. It's probably the most low brow thing in their entire catalogue, but goddamn do they get their mileage out of it.

What about the one that gave John Cleese an injury?

Or the tale of Michael Norman Smith:

Hey, why not go with their first movie, 'And Now for Something Completely Different'? This one is a string of sketches put together - the very best ones from their TV show, no less! Thing is, the TV show was made for the BBC, thus the BBC owned all the rights to the footage - so the Pythons made this theatrical movie in order to get some earnings of their own.

This sketch drove me bonkers when I was younger.

I think I might have said that before though.
