I know this sounds completely crazy, but just stay with me on his one. I bought Red Dead Redemption the weekend after it came out and I've been playing the single player ever since. It's one of those few games that offers a lot and I love every bit of it, from the story to the exploration to the poker. I tried the online multiplayer earlier this week and I noticed something: Free Roam is just like an MMO. Think about it. You have a huge game world, filled with NPCs and other players. You can join groups and take on PvE challenges to level up your character and gain better guns(loot). I'm just trying to say that Rockstar may have created a perfect prototype for a shooter/action MMO. OK, now you can call me crazy.

Ummm no you are wrong. The Free roam has a very small amount of people in it so its more like a SMO (Small Multiplayer Online). And it is much to flawed.

EDIT: PvE? I would barely say that. I would more say PvP when you get chased over a large field before dying from a sniper.

Wouldn't it be for fair to say they took elements of some MMO games and used them to spice up RDR's multiplayer, rather than outright calling it an MMO?

I can see where your coming from, games like Global Agenda were basically the same thing but called themselves mmo's, Red Dead could count too i guess.

I'm not calling it an MMO per say, I'm just trying to point out that Red Dead Redemption's Free Roam could be seen as a prototype for a shooter MMO.

Its a server based free roam "lobby". No one is there for the killing (except the douchebag trolls). Its a waiting room. Its like Diablo II's mutiplayer (sort of)

But I was able to take on a gang hideout with another player who just happened along. Wouldn't that constitute PvE?

Free Roam? an MMO?

BWHAHAHAAHAH

Not even close...its the game map filled with people not wanting to play CTF or Deathmatch
or the Missions from Outlaws

Free Roam is like a fancy lobby...with assholes....

I enjoy it less enjoyable then most games of keeping you in enclosed spaces...

I just wish people would leave me alone :/ -sigh-

I totally understand what you mean and all, but couldn't an ACTUAL mmo be a much better prototype?

Red Dead Redemption was amazing, and the free roam was fun, till server issues and xbox live lag killed it. Which took roughly five minutes.

The server/networking part of an MMO are much more important than the actual gameplay, so WoW or EQ would be better templates for a shooter MMO, even though they are RPG's.

I would argue gameplay is more important than the servers and maintenance to run an MMO, after all how can you pay for all of it if people don't want to play it?

It only has like 16 players, so its not a MMO.

But still, I wish the game was a MMO. That it would be just like the singleplayer except almost every NPC would be a real player.

As many people have said before this post, Red Dead's free roam is not an MMO so much as a lobby full of douchebags.

The massive in massively multiplayer online game actually refers to the size of the world, one that's capable of housing tons of players, not the number of players. By the strictest definition, Red Dead Redemption is an MMO

The "massive" in MMO is supposed to mean massively multiplayer... as in a lot of players. Hundreds, thousands, often times in one location or nearby.

Red Dead Redemption is just a glorified lobby.. I'm not even sure what the max population count is.. but I'm sure it's not much.

The map is huge but when the player limit is only 16, its not a MMO. Like SyphonX said, its about the player count, not the size of the map.
