Either the free-ness hasn't happened yet or Valve have reached a new level of exchange-rate-madness where $0.00 = £6.99. I probably won't play the game but it can have a loving home in my backlog of games that will not be played until 2020, they'll appreciate the company I'm sure.
Daily and weekend deals start/end at 10AM PST so right now still an hour and a half out before it would start.

Tripwire made a mistake in my opinion in how they released Rising Storm.
By integrating it to the RO2, they effectively slashed their player base instead of nurturing it. For RO2 players the game is held hostage because more than half of its new features is locked away and teased, along with more than half of the player base. There is also no reason why anyone should buy RO2 in the first place, since RS already contains it, so yeah it is a cash grab since most of the new players will also have to pay for RS unless they want to play in underpopulated servers with mostly bots.

They didn't cut it in half though: after the RS craze died down, there were once again tons of pure HoS servers full of people. Turns out they had the player base for two games after all.

The game would be much more fun if the devs were focusing more on delivering quality content than cash grabs. Yes, RO2 is free, but the vast majority of RO players play the non free expansion Rising Storm. Unless you pay for it you get only "rifle access" (you can only use 1 class and your experience points are not recorded).
rifles are the only good gun in RO 2.

This isn't COD or CS, you are NEVER going to get close enough to use an SMG or even an AR. You'd get shot well before you get close.

The common distance of engagement is about 300-500 meters. RO2 is basically a hardcore sniper competition. Just like it was in real life.

So you are stuck slowly advancing and scanning the area for snipers. No HUD elements to help you either.

bullets? You have to check it periodically.

Who is around you? You have 2 eyes, use them. No color coded screen names over people's heads here.

scopes? scopes is for dedicated snipers. Who also get harassed more than a hot chick on XBL when someone wants the ONLY scope on the entire team. Better get used to squinting. Just like soldiers had to do in real life.

You have to count your bullets manually, you have to spot your own targets, you have to gauge your own distance, you have to tell who is friend and foe by yourself.

and keep in mind, veteran RO 1 players call this the casual mode. Yeah.
Downloaded the singleplayer and had a go on easy.

Noticed that many AI enemies have the tendency to run in circles, or just stand and gawp at you as you run up to them to shoot them. Also several enemies didn't even flinch when I shot them right in the face with a rifle at about 10 yards. It took the second shot to kill them. One guy I bullseyed in a short corridor right in the face, he ran out the door, leaving a massive blood splat on the wall of what should have been his brain.

In short the enemy AI seems very glitchy. Is it just cause I'm playing in easy, or are there updates/mods I need to install to fix it?

The "single player" is just the multiplayer with bots. The game is a multiplayer shooter through and through. The bots barely function, much like the single player skirmish of say Battlefront II for example. If you don't like multiplayer shooters then RO2 is certainly not for you.

This is a wonderful deal. RO2 is one of my favourite shooters of all time. Between TF2 (for arcade, shooty fun-times) and RO2/Rising Storm (for intense, 'realistic' and aggressively difficult times), I don't need any other shooters. The community plays both the base game and the expansion often and there are always full servers on each. Many servers actually run a mix of both RO2 and Rising Storm which is my personal favourite.

The influx of new players is going to be painful for all involved. This game has a learning curve resembling a near-vertical cliff face. If you are new expect to die a lot before you can even manage to get a single kill, not that your KDR matters anyway...something else a new player will have to figure out quickly.

RO2 needs an influx of dedicated players, and this giveaway might be the edge the game needs in order to keep pop numbers up and steady. Anyone who is a fan of WWII shooters should give it a chance.

One note: Tripwire recently updated their EULA with a clause that lets them revoke CD keys from players who engage in "abusive behavior" - http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/announcement.php?f=7&a=10 . Not quite sure how I feel about that -- on the one hand, RO2 has had its share of reprehensible players (Mike Nomad and friends, vocal Nazi fanboys, etc.); on the other hand, this seems like a very heavy-handed way of dealing with trolls and griefers. We'll see how well it works.

The Singleplayer is a tutorial like Titanfall's campaign.

Once you get into the MP, the real game, everything I said kicks in big time.

One thing to note to noobs:

Russians run with their gun in both hands.

German carry theirs in one while running .

Keep track of your team. because TKing is very easy to do and gets everyone mad at you.
Fair enough.

Also that tip is a massive help, thanks.

Now I just have to wait until the multiplayer updates finish loading and I can give this a proper go (and die moronically a lot.)

well, after the free version been, well, free, a lot of people will be trying it out, myself included. so expect more players there.

the videos i saw have player names above friendlies, so i guess that can be used ti determine who is friend or foe?

If Red Orchestra 2 is as hardcore as it sounds then I can't imagine the veteran players will be very happy about the mass influx of COD kiddies from this date forth.
let them whine. personalyl i see it as a influx of easy targets for them.

capcha: stop wasting time
yeah, maybe i should

There are 3 modes:

action: COD wannabe easy mode with training wheels. According to RO players.

realism: The real mode where 99% of the player base is.

classic: "cry baby" mode. People that want the old RO1 difficulty because they don't like the second game. But they still want RO2 graphics.

Some servers KNEW that the free game day would bring in noobs, and have turned on friendly names until they get better or leave. However, no-names was standard and still is. on action mode, the name above the head thing is a given.

But everything I said applies. You have to do everything unless you are on a server with training wheels.

which is why the vets want the free players out because they jump into the game without playing the tutorial and team killing. Just like the free weekend.

and most of them tend to play russian.

and yes, there are plenty of easy targets now. I went from a level 10-20 rifle to a level 39 in two days. The max level is 50.

Oh, and there are pseudo RPG elements like buffs, debuffs, and stats. watch out for those. New players never know what "suppression" is and think its their health being low that's turning their screen grey.
thanks for the information. The video i saw must have been from one of the servers with the names turned on. they did had all the manual aim ect stuff. heh, i even heard people literally paint their own aim circleon the screen to see better when game has none.

well, no names would sure lead to a funny chaos, this game sounds quite hardcore. its about time shooters got something like that (on a popular level).
