I'm not talking about artists that draw porn all the time.

I am talking about artistic people that draw, paint, and/or photograph safe for work creations for the most part, but whenever their urges get the best of them, they often make a side blog, or a secret website to post all of their self indulgence porn.

I know a couple of artists on my Tumblr that do that sort of stuff. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't bother me. However, I don't know if I'm just a tumblr anomaly or if this is an opinion that is generally accepted by a large amount of people.

Also, I am curious as to whether or not this will damage their reputations greatly in the future.
I know being labelled with anything porn can destroy a person's reputation in any job field.

Is it much worse for artists?
Sure there is a risk your fans may find out, but as long as you keep that other side of yourself private and drama free, would it really matter to the general public?

I've been to a few anime conventions that had web artist there with booths, and this subject came up quite often. Turns out that a lot of them do commissions, and a fair percentage of those commissions are, at the very least, 'erotic' in nature. Doesn't seem to bother them much.

As for 'artist' artist, I'm fairly certain erotica is part of the bag, though I doubt a lot of them delve into the hard core stuff. That being said, I've seen some pretty damn nicely done photographic and drawn pornography online that makes me want to see actual art from these people (I know, porn is art, you know what I mean).

Hell, some of this rule 34 and furry stuff is down right beautiful from an artistic standpoint. I'm willing to bet that a lot of it is done by professionals operating under false names. As for it ruining their reputation, I guess it depends. Gorgeous photos/drawings of nice looking naked ladies? Probably stuff they'd be willing to show.

Some of the stranger stuff, not so much.

I guess so.
It just seems really sad when I see upcoming artists struggle with getting out their tensions through their own art, but afraid of either being labeled as a porn artist, or having a tarnished reputation.
So they often bottle it all in.

Personally I really don't care. As long as you keep it separate from your SFW stuff, and don't bring any of that drama to your fans.
Some people do that very well, yet STILL find people willing to blackmail them over that info in an attempt to control them.

This. Look to the paragon of late '90s/early '00 van artwork, Luis Royo. From haunting stuff that moves you to tears up to gigeresque techno-monster-porn. Then again, art is meant to express something, and if "Veined monster boner!" is on your mind, you gotta let it out.

Also, Phil Foglio is da man. From cheesy, fun erotic stuff (XXXenophile), to Magic: the Gathering cards, to the awesome Girl Genius comics (fanservice-y as they are), no single thing seems to "tarnish" the others. But I guess the... playfulness and whimsy of his work does make it kind of easy to file under some snobbish category of "low art, so it doesn't really matter".

Meh, let 'em. Van Gogh, Picasso, Paul-Rubens (and Paul Rubens, for that matter) all had their moments with porn, and history still likes them.

I dont really consider it porn unless it's made for the explicit purpose of arousing people.

Generally, artists that don't do that for a living are using it as "nudity as art" instead of "nudity as porn." Even if they do something with explicit sex, there's generally more to it than just existing to turn people on.

Well, it's not exactly drawing, but beloved children's author: Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory etc) also wrote some pretty saucy adult fiction.

People want teh secks.

Alot of the people I know who do it keep an alias to do such works, and try to develop a style that can't be attributed to their main style.

I'm way too much of a prude to stoop, but sometimes I wish I wasn't, it pays.

Many doujin circles will create works that are H and non-H. That doesn't stop them at all from putting out great works of art ranging from music to manga.

My sibling is a talented illustrator who often does porn. Mainly guro. And on his main name because his reputation among the sort of lowlife who attributes a negative ethical value to pornography is of as little concern to him as it would be to me.

Who is the dirt fit to judge?

I can say with confidence that the vast majority of artists will use their skills to draw erotica or porn at some point in time. You tend to draw what you like, and most people like sex, soooo... And I'm not even talking about commissions. Artists are also very self-indulgent people who love and hate their creations with unbridled passion. As for me, I use secret Dropbox folders to share with my inner circle

Though of course I'm pretty certain some artist do their porn workds under Pseudonyms as not to damage their own carrers.

There is a comic book artist (naming no names) who's art style is so close to that of an artist that produces porn comics (again naming no names) that it seems very possible that their the same person.

Interesting.
However I wonder, will it honestly really matter to most clients even if they do find out? As I said in OP I know for a fact that there are specific artists I watch that draw erotic and/or kink art on the side, but for they make most of their income through SFW, general audience, appropriate art.
Sometimes said artists would even subtly link their NSFW blog once on their regular blog to get followers. To this day, many of the fans are very aware of their "other" side, but hold no ill will towards the artist, nor do they intend to black mail them because of it. This also hasn't affected said artists in the slightest when it came to getting income.

So in this day and age, should artists really even care about who finds out about their sexual habits?

Ever read Heavy Metal? There's your answer. Yes, artists do occasionally draw erotic material. It still makes for nice artwork. I shared an apartment with my cousin awhile back, he draws, and designs tattoos. It's often part of the culture, for a tattoo parlor or elsewhere. The feminine form in particular and masculine are great for practice. Curves, shapes, shadows, and so on. I don't see anything wrong with it.

For me that would be cello...

Nothing wrong with that creativity pours from the deepest parts of our brain.
Also in art naked body is hard to draw - excellent practice and every artist got their favorite part (and I am not talking of boobs and ass only). I was taught in traditional painting by an old artist he is dead now, died about 3 years ago. And he loved the neck, all of his female paintings had very beautiful necks and he did a lot of them. Both male and female necks, young and old.

I myself love the waist (area above hips and below 3rd set of abs) specially on the back. I say that any person, of any kind, age weight, size, color anything is beautiful if they have a good posture and waistline. And I don't mean thin waistline, but shaped, fitting, smooth, natural, strong and supporting. There is just something magical about waist and lower back....

Well, I don't find anything wrong with and I find that it can be a good outlet for some artists. Being an artist myself I tend to keep my work rather safe for work (mainly cause I cant draw anything sexy/erotic to save my life) but if I decided to draw anything more mature, I'd post it in a separate place from my normal art, mainly because I like to view NSFW art separately from normal art. As for taking a different name for NSFW art, I guess some artist tend do it keep their name clean if their name has become like a brand.

But like I said, I don't mind it. Honestly from what I've seen so far, people are starting to be more accepting of NSFW art so if they find out one of their favourite artists draws porn on the side, they won't pick up the torches and pitchforks and brand the artist as filthy scum that has besmirched the holy sanctitude of ART! Heck they'll most probably consider it a double "oh hey, my fave artist also draws my fetish!? Jackpot!"
