Remedy Reveals Alan Wake PC FAQ

Everything you always wanted to know about Alan Wake on the PC [but were afraid to ask] can now be found in Remedy's new FAQ.

In the finest tradition of "better late than never," Alan Wake is Alan Wake PC FAQ [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114757-Alan-Wake-Is-Coming-Home], posted today on the Alan Wake forums.

First up, the minimum PC requirements: dual core CPU, two gig of RAM, eight gig of hard drive space and a DirectX 10-compatible video card with 512MB RAM. To play it at a level of quality that doesn't suck you'll need "a modern quad-core CPU and a graphics card with around 2000 in 3DMark Graphics Score [http://community.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu]," while maximum settings will require "top of the line" hardware all the way around. Remedy is trying to get the game to work on Windows XP as well as Vista and 7, but a Mac version will not be forthcoming.

Alan Wake will employ Steamworks, with achievements and Steam Cloud saves and settings, and more to the point, Games for Windows Live will not be in the picture at all. Both DLC releases, The Signal and The Writer, will be included with the game, bulking it up to a 7.5GB download. The savegame system will function exactly as it did in the 360 version - sorry, no "save anywhere" option - but more options for adjusting the visuals, including the ability to turn off the HUD, will be available.

The one thing the FAQ doesn't cover is the cost of the thing, which will be announced "soon, a bit closer to release." And it will be soon enough indeed - the PC version of Alan Wake is slated to hit Steam in February.

Huh, I might check this game out. Expected it to use GFWL. Pretty pleased to see it won't.

Is it any good? Was mildly interested but as it wasn't out for PC never properly looked into it.

Why did they have the DLC as a separate thing if the PC version always has it? May as well save me some downloading time by including it on a separate disc.
Where does it say that DLC will be separate? It says that the DLC will be included...

Or is it one of those Cerberus Network bullshit things where every new copy comes with a code to the dlc?
Why is that bullshit?

Ummm... you know that all DLC comes included in the game, right?, you won't need any crappy codes or extra downloads to enjoy them.

OT: I'm pleasently surprised that they opted for Steamworks instead of the stupid GFWL. I might get this game down the line, sound like they're making all the right choices for a proper PC release.

What on Earth does it need a freaking quad-core for? Most of the game is played in the dark in a forest, there's never more then about 3 characters on screen, and physics opportunities are limited at best. And its not like the AI needs to be anything special.

Price should be about £20. It won't be, but that's what it should be.

DirectX 10, so not a direct console port. Yay!
No GFWL. Yay!
Steamworks. Boo!
All the DLC there has been up to now. Yay!

Since I already borrowed and Xbox mostly just to play this I really don't care anymore. Now if they released the upcoming downloadable sequel to the PC they'd have my attention, but alas I'll probably have to take the same route.

Yay! But I'm still pissed that we couldn't get a year ago.

I'm also going to jump on the bandwagon and say "yay, no GFWL".

Also my graphics cards (Yes, cards, I run SLI) are rated almost 5000, each, which means I can run it with all the effects cranked and still get 60 fps. Maybe I can force further AA through Nvidia control panel o_O

It says that it's a download, I just assumed that meant a process separate to the install.

Besides the process itself being inconvenient as all get-out, I don't like day-one DLC. It wasn't as bad in ME2, but the process is a pretty lazy way to milk more money from used sales. Maybe I should've said "Catwoman Bullshit".

I suppose that doesn't really apply in this case since all the DLC was released much later.
It states specifically in the article that it will be included with the game. So there is no extra anything. Also, since it's a Steamworks title, there will be no "Cerberus network bullshit". The way it reads, you get it, even if you don't want it.

OT: I find it really strange it's nowhere to be seen on Steam yet to pre-purchase but it's coming out in less than a month. Makes me worry it's not going to make that deadline. Also, I would love to get a price. Guess I'll just have to wait for it to go live on Steam.

YES. Oh god, yes. I was hoping for a PC port ever since the game was first released.

I just want you to know I laughed really hard at your bolding :p

On Topic:
I rented Alan Wake for the 360 and I actually liked it a lot. I'd buy it on PC if the price was right.

Will require top of the line hardware? Hah! Only if they did 0 Optimisation for it at all. BF3 runs Max settings 50+ FPS on a mid range rig, I doubt it will require 'top of the line' stuff.
Still, I'll likely get this. Could be interesting.

I'm also a bit surprised by those requirements. I meet them, but I really don't see why they're as high as they are. I'm pretty sure Metro 2033 has similar requirements and it looks incredible.

Maybe they put more graphical work into the game for the PC? I really hope they didn't just crappily port it. It shouldn't have taken this long if that's all they did.

Bar tessellation, I can max out Metro 2033 on a core2duo. So... yeah. This would seem like a somewhat lazy inflation of requirements, unless there is an absolutely massive difference between this and the 360 version.
