Something that has pissed me off something chronic this week, BBC iPlayer is no longer on the PS3. All of the catch-up stuff is gone with the new system update. That was about 50% of what I used my PS3 for, so I'm not best pleased about it.

Thinking about it though, I realised I'd heard this before. Before I got mine I remember sitting and listening as people complained about various other functions disappearing during updates. Is this becoming a regular thing? Where will Sony stop? Would it still be supporting a lot of the online features it was released with if PSN charged a fee to use? And most importantly of all, are you pissed off now you have to leave your bed to catch up on Torchwood and John Bishop?

The BBC iPlayer isn't gone, the TV section has been updated and the iPlayer now runs it's own application, although my housemate still runs the same web-browser based one so all you have to do is link to it in the browser.
The new application itself takes a little longer to start up, but it runs quicker and you can now 'favourite' the programs you watch regularly.

The only function that i know of that has been removed from the PS3 is support for Linux, which was to stop people from hacking the security.

Sony have always tried to bring as much free content as possible.

If the TV section hasn't come up straight away, just give it a bit, maybe reset the system a couple of times.

Well, I'm pissed off that the newer versions of the PS3 don't have backwards compatability. The only way for me to play a PS2 game now is to buy an entire PS2 console, which for some reason is still selling for 200 dollars.

So, yup, never going to play Kingdom Hearts, or Shadow of the Colossus, unless they come out for pc or something.

Where do you live that a PS2 is that expensive?

What's pissing me off is the fact that, since I missed the forced update after the PSN hacking scandle, due to my internet not working, I wasn't able to update my password, and now I can't update my password at all because it won't accept the old one, even though i've since been able to update via storage media (the blu-rays that come with the OPS mag, thank you!!!) to latest one.

What the hell man? In the UK it's only roughly £25-30 and in the us it comes to 40 dollars. This is used prices but even still new is still costing only £70 and 80-100 dollars in the US
and on Amazon you can score one for £30! I hope you did not pay that much!

I'd say he lives here in Aus. Even though our economy is better than your's we still have to pay through the arse for our consoles.

I was under the impression that removing paid-for features was illegal, but since SONY has been doing exactly that for years, I don't know for sure. I don't know about the iPlayer specifically, but the PSP had feature after feature ripped out of it as time went by, all in the name of defending against piracy (despite the fact that pirates used custom firmware, and thus these "updates" didn't even affect them).

I don't see why it would be any different for the PS3. Unless, you know, the company has actually started listening to its customers. ... HA!

Huh, it's been a couple months since I checked Amazon, but the lowest that I could find that had at least an acceptable condition was 50 bucks, still way too much for a last generation console that has no new games coming out for it.

Plus, I don't really have anywhere to hook it up to. I've got my Xbox and PS3 occupying my TV's currently, and I don't want to have to unhook and rehook my consoles just to switch games. I heard that Shadow of the Colossus is getting a re-release though, so I guess there's that...

Yeah, they're like $60 here, and I live in Australia.

If they're only $60 in Australia, $200 is infinitely too much no matter where you live.

You just answered your own question. People want PS2's, irrelevant of their price. Luckily, I never got rid of mine, although I might need to replace it soon, since it's nearly eleven years old and has been played to the point in which I have gone through two controllers (From such heavy usage)

Where the hell did you find one for $60? unless it was a second or third-hand one from a garage sale or something.

Yeah, see. Refurbished. At least second-hand. I would want a new one, if mine wasn't still hiding in the cupboard waiting for a powerpoint to become available.

Shadow of the Colossus is coming out for Ps3 some time this year, it's a remastered version and comes with ICO.
