I like the library of games available - 62%
I want to upgrade from my PlayStation 2 - 62%
My friends have a PlayStation 3 and I want to connect and play games with them - 56%
I am interested in PS3's other online capabilities - 50%
I am interested in PS3's other multimedia capabilities - 49%
I am interested in playing multi-player games online via PlayStation Network - 42%
Offers that bundle a PS3 and HDTV have motivated me to want to purchase both - 36%
I am looking forward to buying a specific game - 12%
So, counting the percentage of people that gave the ten reasons cited above, it comes to... four hundred and ninety seven percent. How does that work, exactly?

Ummm...

I'd say they did drive sales. People ticked this box ^ rather than the "specific game" one presumably because they're looking forward to a collection of exclusives. Not many people buy a console just for one game.

And without the exclusives the console war would be entirely down to hardware. I think in that situation a ton more people would have bought 360's as was the case a few years back when the PS3 didn't have a great deal of exclusives.

Number 3, that reason does not exist if the console's entire library of games exists on another console.
People may not buy a console because a single game they want is exclusively available on that console, but because that game, among with many others are (only) playable on that console.

I'm surprised more than 10% say they would buy a console now because a game they're interested in will probably be released on it later.

EDIT/Others apparently pointed this out before me.

A console exclusive doesn't sell a console, multiple do. :)
Also everyone who was such a real sony fan that they would buy the console for GOW 3 propably already bought the console on launch. ( like many now annoyed FF13 fans)

hmm... I guess I'm in the minority here. I bought my N64 for Mario 64 and Zelda, GameCube for Eternal Darkness, Wii for Zelda, Xbox for Halo, Xbox 360 because my Xbox died, and my PS3 for GoW. Heck, I even spent $1,200 bucks to upgrade my PC to play Half Life 2, back in the day. To be truthful though, I would never say that I bought the console solely for the exclusive(s) (except upgrading the PC and the Wii) but it usually is the thing that tips the scale.

While not very scientific, everyone that I know that has a console has bought it because they wanted to play game X and the exclusives were the ones that tipped them one way or the other. I want to play rock band but GoW pushed me to buy the PS3. I want to play CoD but Halo pushed me to buy the 360. Sure, they tell their spouse its for all the reasons stated in the study, but it really is so they can play X.

I think a better study would be to look at people that just bought a console and ask them what made the decision to go for either a 360 or PS3. That might give a better idea around the importance of exclusives.

Beside, is there any other reason to buy a Wii except for the exclusives???

I think Square Enix are the most recent developer to see this - having broken the exclusivity promise and released their latest game to both hordes.

To such an extent that Vs XIII is a possible convert, and I would be amazed if XIV didn't follow suit.

I think in this particular market, and the new learning that this and the next generation of gamers have grown up with (i.e. funding rebalancing) this will continue to impact the "killer apps" ability to shift a console.

As someone who owns a 360, a PS3, and a Wii, my preferred console is the 360. However, I bought the other consoles for access to the games that were not available on the 360 - i.e. the platform exclusives. For any games available on multiple consoles, I tend to lean towards the 360, unless there are severe technical deficiencies (Final Fantasy XII for example).

Generally, without the exclusive titles, I'd have no need for more than one console.

I'd say #4 is usually the my main reason, but only if #3 is there and #10 is usually what pushes me over. For me it was Ratchet & Clank Future.

Problem with using the PS3 as the basis is that a few of those things don't even apply to the Wii or 360. I haven't see any bundles with an HDTV for those two for example, and obviously the PS3 is the only one that can play blu-ray discs.

Also, as others have said, #3.

Only reason I wanted a 360 was Oblivion. The PS3 wasn't out (and the game didn't come to it until later, anyway) and my PC was shit...so...yeah. I didn't actually buy it JUST for Oblivion, but also to finally try this KoToR and Halo stuff.

That said, I'm happy with my choice. It turned out to be the RPG console of the generation. Somehow. WTF happened there?

The PS1 and PS2 were the kings of the RPGs. Now, the 360 has the most RPGs of the consoles.

WTF
Still nothing compared to how many RPGs there are for PC.

Hmm...
For me... yeah, it would be the library of games the PS3 has.
So far, the only exclusive for the 360 I had any interest in at all was Fable 2, but after getting a chance to play it on a friend's console... meh... it really isn't that different from the original Fable.

Honestly, pretty sure the only people who didn't know this already were the console manufacturers.

Developers don't have much say in the matter (see: ghostbusters PC port) and publishers seem to operate on a "pure sales" level. Meaning they would attempt to calculate the expected performance of a given title and shoot for exclusivity bonuses equal to or greater than.

Which makes exclusivity both a lack of confidence in a title and a self-perpetuating con.

If we turn our focus to the Wii which is also a console. Look how many people bought that and only own Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort depending on purchase date. I think that game did sell a console to millions of people.

I see tons of WRPGs, but next to no JRPGs. And PCs basically have infinite backwards compatability.

Still, that's why I said "of the consoles".
