If you haven't already, look into FLCL (Fooly Cooly.) It's a short but hilarious anime that very well may confuse you.
I tried fooly cooly for a little bit and admittedly got bored.

I'd like to see that explanation you spoke of. And the guy below me.

spoke of a movie. I never heard of a NGE Movie. O_O

I think I would have understood the ending to NGE if it showed the "human instrumentality project" actually being ACTIVATED. Then I could... sort of live with it. As is I feel like banging my head on the wall.
It's up, and so you haven't watched the movie? Oh hell, you need to watch it. It's the definitive, true ending for the series. It's what my avatar is from, actually.
I read it and my head exploded. I think It'll make sense when I watch the movie... just gotta find a link to it..some where. :p
I can help ya with that. I'm always happy to help people with this anime >.<

If you have any more questions with the anime, I'd gladly answer them. I think I'd be able to answer a direct or specific question better than just a general "What's up with the ending!" thing.
Gotcha.

urgh, I'm starting to regret skimming by the last 2 episodes, as they were boring the living heck out of me.

OFF TO THE MOVIE! :D
Trust me, the last two episodes were hard to understand even if you were paying attention.

It's a shame that a lot of "mind fuck" stuff is mostly manga (because they aren't always as popular) while anime's tend to be more battle oriented.
But if you do ever check out manga some good "mind fuck" ones are Liar Game and Doubt.

Yeah, say what you will about End of Evangelion, but that action sequence where Asuka goes beserk is fucking INSANELY AWESOME.

Hmmmm...afro samurai? Its a western style anime for the most part but its certainly different I suppose.

Also once while watching fuse--like a year ago--I started watching this anime called Ergo Proxy. It doesn't come on anymore. Does anyone know anything about it or what?

I just started watching "Full Metal Panic!"

I'd recommend it.
Seen it, I disliked it as the romantic tones didn't exactly fit my fancy. I'm not a huge romance kind of guy. I think I got up to the episode where the main girl is some sort of information key thing.
The one thing that annoys me most about a lot of Anime series' is when the Protagonist is such an idiot when it comes to romance.

I'm looking at you "Ah! My Goddess" and "Full Metal Panic!"

Definitly. It's my favorite fight scene out of all the movies I've watched, easily surpassing the fight in the FMA movie between Wrath and Gluttony. Someone actually cut together the entire fight from EoE on youtube so that it flows everything together. I'll go ahead and find it...

Just a question for you guys. I've watched a fair bit of anime, but I think I've hit an invisible wall as I'm finding it harder and harder to find an anime that suits my tastes. I know this has happened a many a time in this forums, a guy asking "recommend me an anime" so there's a question at the bottom unrelated to the topic at hand.

anime I've seen and liked.

Tenjou Tenge, Hellsing (non ova), Bleach (before it sucked), Code Geass, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist (non ova) Soul Eater (ending made me cry... because it was so bad.) Air Gear, Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop (if my avatar wasn't obvious enough), Elfen Lied, Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Katekyo Hitman Reborn (I stopped watching when they included the future or some crap), Neon Genesis Envengellion, Samurai Champloo, Samurai 7, Trigun, Zombie Loan, and many many others that I just can't recall.

If you're a fan of anime, and have seen a bunch you should get the theme of the animes I mentioned. Story, Mindfuck, action. Preferably all mixed together (good example, Code Geass).

Now for those who were looking for a discussion adding question: What the heck was the deal with Neon Genesis Evengellions ending? Did that make any sense what so ever? The segue between episode 23 or so to the episode 25-26 was so painful that the whiplash caused thunderous echoes across the world. Did he just go crazy or what?

*edit, Sorry I didn't include the list of animes I disliked. also I forgot to add "Gundam Seed".
Have you seen Ergo Proxy, Gundam 00 seasons 1&2, Speed Grapher, Witch hunter Robin, Ghost in the Shell, Dance in the Vampire Bund, One Piece, Sengoku Basara, Fairy Tail, The Count of Monte Cristo, Excel Saga, Eureka 7, School Days, Seikon no Qwaser, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Avatar:the last airbender, Kuroshitsuji, or Kurokami?
If you haven't seen or at least tried any of these I highly recommend it.

OT: Neon genesis' ending wasn't suppose to make sense, that much I'm sure of. Almost as confusing as Soul Eater's(they fucking ate him?! WTF!? Then simple punch! WTF?!)

EDIT: Oh, and if you enjoyed any of the megaman but it wanted something darker, I suggest you watch Cashern Sins.

It's not the most well-known, but you can find it out there: I highly recommend Orphen. Kind of obscure, but very good, especially the first season (the second is still good, but they took a more comedy-based approach that is kind of repetitive and doesn't deliver dramatically until about halfway through). Great fantasy show.

This one seems to be a bit out of your genre, but Clannad is a brilliant anime. Based on a visual novel, it's a romantic comedy/drama that is guaranteed to make you laugh one episode and cry the next. Seriously, anyone who isn't in tears for the last half of the second (and final) season has no soul. I don't care how tough you are, no one I've given the show to, guy or girl, has maintained dry eyes.

If you end up liking it, I also suggest Kanon. Similar show, based on another visual novel by the same company that made Clannad. Not quite as good, in my opinion, but still a great show.

And you seriously need to watch End of Evangelion in order to make sense of..., uh, I mean, in order to gain some form of conlusion to the series.
I remember when Paranoia Agent was on TV, I had no fucking idea what was happening and I started watching at episode 3.

Ya know what OP go ahead and watch Baki the Grappler, it's actiony really really actiony, and the "plot" is so simple yet it doesn't make any logical sense so that fills one and a half of your criteria. But you'll probably stop after a few episodes (I say wait until he fights the giant fucking gorilla to stop).

If by "Bleach, before it started sucking", you mean "Before they started launching into another 50 episode long filler arc after every actual episode", then I hear ya :p

Burst Angel is pretty good too... assuming you don't mind that the artists were obviously about as perverted as you can get without donning a cape and calling yourself Pantsman... [as in removing them...]

I must agree with this... Cow...

Anyways, I suggest Paranoia Agent, Flcl, and some Pani Poni Dash.
Those 3 will probably confuse you (Pani Poni purely for Comedic reasons), but are well worth a Watch

For something less confusing, try Memories. It's 3 different Stories mixed together (Seen 2 of the stories)

All I can think of at the moment.

I haven't really seen the entire series either, but you should really watch episode 2.

It's really good.

Go for the oldies!

I'd recommend Cyborg 009 or Black Jack.

Classics, I say!

EDIT: Yeah, I got nothing when it comes to Evangelion. If you're smart, you'll drop it right now.

Some things are not meant for mortals to know.
Which Cyborg 009? There were three, I think.

I was thinking the one from the 80s.

Though Tvtropes says that the 2000 series was "pretty good".

Oh-ho-hoh, you're asking for an explanation for NGE? Give me a second to find my answer to that...

The reason why NGE gets so weird in its' final episodes is because Gainax completely ran out of money. They were struggling to the end to make each episode and by the time they got to episode 25, they had completely run out. They had other things planned but couldn't go through with them so they focused on Shinji's state of mind. If you haven't already, I suggest watching the movie End of Evangelion. This movie is the true final episodes and makes much more sense than the original ending.

Also, I figured out what the ending and what some of the symbolization of the anime means. Put into further spoilers as it obviously contains still more...
Ok, upon staring at a picture of DNA I realized it looked a lot like the Lance of Longinus. Since The Lance is often coiled up but has been shown to have the ability to uncoil itself I took it that The Lance represents DNA.
Now, Eva 01 has been mentioned to have become a god after Ep. 19 because she consumed the S2 organ, allowing her an infinite power supply. I've decided that this means Eva 01 is now, quite literally, a God.

Now when The Lance penetrates Eva 01's S2 organ while in it's Berserk mode and with wings, this can be symbolized as sperm penetrating the egg; The Lance being DNA injecting itself into the S2 Organ which is the womb or egg. This then turns Eva 01, who is a God, into the Tree of Life from which all life comes from. Instrumentality then begins and everyone on Earth is returned to the primordial ooze ("Tang".)

Afterwards, Shinji decides to reject Instrumentality ( Possibly meaning he rejected Evolution) and so Eva 01 stops Instrumentality. Eva 01 then drifts away from Earth with The Lance of Longinus unraveled. This can symbolize God drifting away from Earth (I've often said "Even if there is a God, He's nowhere near us now".)

So Eva 01(God) drifts away from Earth leaving only Shinji and Asuka alive on an island surrounded by blood. One Male and one Female; Adam and Eve. The first 2 humans are left to create the human race anew.

And finally, with that in mind the very title of the anime makes sense.

As I thought, the word 'Neon' comes from the Greek neo which means 'new'. Genesis means creation or birth and given the above theory, Evangelion is (more or less) interchangeable with 'God'. As such, the title can mean 'God's New Creation', thus fortifying my theory. God created life anew, to start over from the beginning.

As for Reccomendations...

Yu Yu Hakusho is a terrific anime, think DBZ but the fights don't take forever and they actually think how to win.

Welcome to the NHK was a terrific anime, funny but also a bit deep.

If you haven't already, look into FLCL (Fooly Cooly.) It's a short but hilarious anime that very well may confuse you.
End Of Evangelion is an excellent film. I can't wait to see how they end the re-makes.

On Topic: FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a pretty good anime. The Fullmetal Alchemist movie is also a good film as well.

Ergo Proxy is also pretty good.

I don't watch anime, but I read manga. As a result, it costs £7 per volume and that's pretty effective at pacing me so that I don't rush through a series.
