So I bought the recent capcom humble bundle which came with Resident Evil 5, which I want to play online with a buddy of mine.

Problem is that Resident Evil 5 was originally a Games for Windows Live game, and the moment I tried to play it the game attempted to download games for windows live to my computer, to which I yelled "NEIN!" and immediately stopped the download.

Now I can't seem to get the game to work despite the fact that it should work with steamworks according to Capcom.

Anyone know a way to get this game working with steam?

Maybe try how Dark Souls worked when they changed it to steamworks, right click, go to properties and check the "Betas" tab, if it works there should be an option called "Select which Beta you would like to opt into" in the case of Dark Souls it's called "-sptde-2.--Steam Build 2.0"

Hope that helps.

Seems like the game still needs GFWL in case some people want to import old save files and acheivements. So the game will install GFWL, but not use it directly in the game.

And maybe the Maluc patch mentioned there will help you with your problem.

There are no betas for RE5, it was actually one of the first things I checked when I discovered the problem. Seems like a logical solution, but nope.

The Maluc patch is exactly what I'm looking for actually. Do you know if using the patch will still allow online coop to function in the game? I know that used to be tied to games for windows live and I'm not sure how good the steamworks integration works.

Thank you for the help.

You don't actually have to log in to GFWL, it just installs it in case you want to import. You obviously don't, since you haven't played the PC version in the past, but there's no way past it as it seems. IIRC it just installs it but doesn't use it as long as you don't use the Import feature. Just let it install it, run the game once, and then I think you should be able to uninstall GFWL without being asked to reinstall it.

I tried doing that, but the game forces you to have GFWL to boot the game every time, so booting it once and then uninstalling GFWL didn't work.

So far the Maluc has worked and allowed me to boot the game without installing GFWL. I still have to test to see if it works with coop.

I don't want GFWL cluttering up my computer if I can help it. It's dead software and I don't want to have to have it installed if I don't need to. I honestly wouldn't have even bothered with the game had I not been promised that it works with steamworks.

I played the game with a friend today and he had the same problem as you do. He didn't want to download GFWL and the game didn't want to start afterwards. Installing the patch helped. And online coop still worked.

The patch might lead to randomly occurring graphical glitches that wont go away until you restart the game though (really bad flickering, graphical artefacts, several scenes overlaying each other randomly). I'm not entirely sure if the patch is at fault but leberkase doesn't have the problem with the same GPU so...

It is quite playable though since it can take quite a while for the bug to occur.

Edit:
Just saw it on the pcgamingwiki. It is a known problem with the PC version but alt-tabbing out and back into the game is supposed to fix it.
