Resident Evil Creator Explains Why the Series Stopped Being Scary

I don't really get this, though, because I thought Resident Evil 4 was really scary, just not all the time. It had nothing to do with having more action, it just knew how to pace itself.

Resident Evil 6 was utter shit because it couldn't calm down for a single second, it was like ramming a family bag of Skittles down a six year old's throat and letting him loose with a paintball gun.

The other thing that really killed the horror of RE was the shitty partner system, because as soon as you have someone to help you, you don't feel isolated anymore and it's impossible to work up any decent tension knowing that your partner can bail you out at any time (unless the AI is complete dogshit...)

The sales to the Resident Evil remake were lackluster? Wow, I must be living in BizzaroWorld or something! I thought the remake was great! Obviously not many other people did. Perhaps it was it's GC exclusivity which were the cause of poor sales.
Yeah. Who knew releasing a remake of a horror game on a console mostly made for small children/family gaming would be a bad thing? What a load of bollocks.

The remake was GREAT, but I didnt play it for YEARS because I refused to buy another console just to do so.

I find it interesting that he says they went in an "action" direction and that the action gameplay is still so bad. RE5 was really not that different of a control scheme than RE1. What changed was the mood. So instead of a good horror game, they make a terrible action game.

If you're gonna make action games the competition is gonna be a hell of a lot harder than in horror, and the RE gameplay just wont cut it.

So i played Resident Evil 1 recently. For the first time. The game was HIDEOUS. not scary, not hard, jsut hideous. And i dont mind bad graphics, i enjoyed the early silent hills and still do, but this game, how it got so popular is beyond me.
So no, your game was never scary to begin with, it was just poorly designed.
Can I be so rude to ask how far you got and what char you used before you gave up? It's understandable that when used to analog controls and run and gun RE can feel very restrictive but to me it adds so much tension especially when the hunters come out to play.
I used Chris (at least i think it was Chris, its a bulky guy that looks like a bad interpretation of rembo) and i dont know how far i got to but i stole golden lion emblem or something from a hidden room that was opened by that crazy girl playing piano. not sure whether thats far or not.
Thing is, the controls and camera while crappy didnt prevent me from enjoying Silent Hill, but here it felt unworkable. I dont know about "hunters" if going by how they look in the movies i havnet met any. gota note that i havent played any other RE game, as i like to start from the 1, hence why im playing a 16 year old game.

Personally, I found RE4 to be scary. Granted, it was one of the first horror games I'd ever played, but I found it tense and frightening, but it was the functionality of the controls that kept me going. It was scary, but it was still fun to play! Yes, I could save every time I walked up to a typewriter, but the scant resources kept me cautious. The only two things that put me off the original RE games (I played them after 4) was the bad camera angles and the limitation on saves. Everything else was fine! Someone should've told Mikami that it wasn't the action focus on action that saved RE4; it was the functionality of the controls!

For the record, I did enjoy 5 and 6, but I realize that they were more action-horror than action. RE5 did piss me off with that crappy AI partner and the shitty inventory system. 6 improved on those, but was still more action focused. The boss fights are kind of annoying, and splitting up the campaigns into 4 different stories instead of making one long and engaging story was not the best idea.

I still had fun with them, but I can certainly see and respect why fans of the first games hate them.

I see a lot of people saying that the reasons RE0 and the RE1 remake failed was because they were on the gamecube, except so was 4 (at first anyway) and that one sold really well, so that excuse doesn't hold up.
I also don't see how this is him blaming the fans (as others have said) they chose to go after a different audience where they can make more money, and if you had a choice between successful and bankrupt most people would choose to be successful, regardless of what that does to their series, other people turn out like 38 Studios and Platinum Games, where you can make a really interesting product that sells horribly.
How many of those copies were sold on the game cube? I'l save you the wiki the gamecube version of RE sold 1.35M how many copies of Resident Evil 4 sold on the cube.....? 1.7M So urm ya RE4 sold marginally better on the cube (1.7M) than RE1-remake but was much more successful right!?

Look at this sales sheet http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Resident_Evil just to see how much BS is being spouted RE2 sold more copies on PS1 than RE4 did on PS2.

It's nothing more than capcom chasing after the people that didn't buy Resident Evil and changing it all in the name of accessibility and opening up the franchise to new fans while shitting all over the original user base like nigh-on every game out there today. I find it funny RE2 is still the best selling RE on a single platform and all it took was the shit in Nemesis and Veronica to kill off the franchise. But hey now we got co-op and shiny action figures to play with cool beans Capcom just don't ever change up the Monster Hunter franchise in the same way.
RE4 also got a lot more positive reviews then RE0 or the remake, and (just going by that wiki) it sold 500,000+ more copies than RE0, that IS a huge amount, also 350,000+ copies than the remake.

If you want to bring in the the previous games, then RE4 on the PS2 also outsold Code Veronica (also on the PS2) by 1,300,000 copies (that's even more than all Code Veronica sales on both Dreamcast and PS2), that's also a huge amount and Code veronica had a similar play style to RE0 and the Remake.

This is an idea for you. Stop spending crazy amounts of money making a game so then you have to sell millions and millions of copies to break even.

Spend less money on a smaller game and then you can build a game for a smaller audience. With modern tech a older style resident evil game will be very very cheap to make. You don't even need voice actors.
