Resident Evil Revelations Revamp Adds A New Character

Come May 21, Resident Evil Revelations hits the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U, and Capcom has a long list of reasons why you should care about this rehashed 3DS title.

When Resident Evil Revelations debuted on the 3DS on February 7, 2012, fans greeted it as a surprisingly solid entry in Capcom's flagship survival-horror franchise -- particularly for a handheld game. A few months went by, most forgot about the game, and we all collectively assumed that was the last we'd hear of Revelations. Then, recently, Capcom decided that its coffers were looking a bit anemic, and decided that the best way to rectify this situation would be to re-release Revelations on the popular home console du jour. As a result, May 21 will see the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U debut of Resident Evil Revelations.

Those of you who played the handheld game, despite your affection for that title, are likely scratching your heads at this news, wondering why you might possibly care about a game you already played through more than a year ago. I was wondering the same thing when the announcement came through the wire. To this, Capcom claims there are many reasons for us to care, and this morning it released a lengthy list of such reasons.

The most obvious change inspired by the leap to modern consoles is the improved graphics found in Resident Evil Revelations. The original 3DS game was certainly quite attractive (and one of the few titles not developed by Nintendo that used the handheld's 3D technology in an interesting, engaging fashion) but it was created for the 3DS' relatively low-resolution screen. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U incarnation of the game will instead feature true HD graphics (though it should be pointed out that, in all likelihood, Revelations will still use the same textures found in the 3DS game).

As far as new features, Revelations' biggest boon is the inclusion of a new playable character, Rachel. She made her debut in the 3DS version of Revelations, but in that game she served as a simple non-player character. For the new version, players can assume the role of Rachel, though she's only playable in the game's action-focused "Raid Mode," much like Hunk was in the 3DS title.

Further, the new iteration of Revelations will include two additional enemies: The Wall Blister and the as-yet-unnamed hulking behemoth seen in the screenshot embedded at the top of this post.

The greatest changes to the original version of Revelations are to be found in its Wii U update. Have a look at Capcom's official description of what this new incarnation of the game offers exclusively on Nintendo's console:

Wii U players will be able to take advantage of the unique features of that system with three different styles of play. Using the screen on the GamePad players can quickly access their map and weapons, or switch the GamePad out for a Wii U pro controller. Alternatively, players are able to transfer all the horror to the GamePad as the title utilizes Off TV play.

The Miiverse feature will offer Wii U players further exclusives. Players can post a dying message on the Game Over screen for other players around the world to see. The 'Creatures Voice' function allows players to personalize the thoughts of enemies in Raid Mode to taunt their friends.

Is this enough to convince those of you who owned the original 3DS game to buy Revelations again on your home console of choice? Personally, I'm unimpressed by what Capcom is doing here, particularly after Resident Evil 6, but the series has long boasted an incredibly devoted fanbase, and if people were willing to shell out cash for what is widely considered the worst entry in the franchise to date [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9950-Resident-Evil-6-Review], then why not do the same for Revelations? Even without any additions, the core gameplay found in the 3DS game far surpasses that seen in Resident Evil 6.

Before we get a loada posts asking about a PC version, like we did in that Walking Dead thread, yes there is also going to be a PC version, it just wasn't mentioned in the article.

I might buy this again when it goes on sale. I enjoyed it on the 3DS, but it's not the kind of game I enjoy on a handheld. I spent most of my time playing it in bed wishing I could plug the 3DS into my TV.

Well, I'm sold on the Wii U version. Being able to use a touch screen for inventory management is always a boon and I appreciated the off screen map in ZombiU, but off-TV play is the biggest selling point here. I'd originally planned to buy it for the 360, but what the hell, the Wii U could use a little attention. There's only so many times you can replay ZombiU and NSMBU, you know?

Lego City Undercover is out this week isn't it? I hear you on the Wii U front, there's only so much speed running of Mario you can do.

Also, I maintain my stance that Resident Evil 6 is a better game than Resident Evil 5. It's less atrociously short and it has better gameplay overall. Neither hold candle to 4.

I couldn't get into revelations on the 3DS so maybe the Wii U version or PC version will change that.

Everyone buy this, Revelations is the best Resident Evil released recently. The best description of it is the refined and well done shooting action of Resident Evil 4 but with the feeling of vulnerability that came with the originals as well as the enclosed spaces. The whole game is like that Regenerator section in RE4 which was the best part of the game because it scared the shit out of me. This is what Capcom should strive for when it comes to Resident Evil and I really hope it does well.

Generally not a big fan of handheld ports to the big screen. As said, they tend to look pretty awful, and they're usually simple. I can think of only a few standouts that would be "worth it", i.e. MGS: Peacewalker HD was worth it.

We'll have to see, I'm really interested in it because it's a back-to-the-basics Resi game, but I'm worried it's too simple and probably looks like a washed out mess on widescreen.

Well there goes another one of the very few reasons I was considering getting a 3DS, now I can just wait and get a better version on a less gimmicky console.

off screen play? Count me in. I know it basically makes your Wii U a glorified HD Gameboy, but I enjoy that feature just so goddamn much with NSMBU that I almost exclusively play it on the gamepad alone. Besides, this being the kind of game my girlfriend would hate means she can watch netflix on the PS3 or something while I play :D

Actually pretty excited about this. From what I hear from...a lot of people here actually, this game seems to be the Resident Evil we were all expecting after 4 but never really got...Except all you 3DS owners.

That screenshot you have is of the final boss, so, not really new, unless they're making him a normal enemy, in which case FUCK.

I hope you didn't dive into it through Resident Evils 5 or 6, they're not exactly benchmarks for the series. Revelations is a good choice though.

That's a pretty accurate description actually; it's definitely what Resident Evil 5 should have been. I thoroughly enjoyed it on the 3DS and considering you need pretty precise aiming for all those zombie "weak spots" (you can forget games that require precision on the 3DS, it's really not designed for shooters) I still managed to complete it without frustration. So it should play pretty damn well on a legit console.

Any news if this will have 3D support on the PS3, or PC Nvidia 3D Vision / AMD 3DHD?

I'm hoping.. maybe the PC version will can force a decent 3D effect at the very least, given the game was made for 3D on the DS.

No, the first was 4 and then I played 5 and RE1 remake at the same time. Just finished the third campaign of RE6 and even though it is a bad designed game overall, I still have a decent amount of fun with it. So far I have not encountered a RE game that was boring.
