I certainly have to say, I can remember a lot about Goldeneye (But not like everybody else, I was afraid of First Person Shooters).

Although, now that I am older, and can play an FPS and enjoy it, the hardest thing for me is finding a copy of the original for the N64, and while I am not a big fan of the Wii, I just might consider picking one up for the very small amount of games that look like a lot of fun, one of them being Goldeneye.

Awesome review.

Did anyone else notice the gaffe in the credits to the video supplement?

OT: I was kind of playing the "cautiously optimistic" card with this one. it's cool to see it getting across-the-board positive reviews, I think this'll have to be a day one purchase for me.

Why does, Greg Tito, always pause, mid sentance, all the time?

Anyway, I think I shall, give this game, a try, when I get, access to my, Wii, again.

I don't know, I still think this remake sucks ass compared to what some company wanted to do with it before Nintendo got their grubby little hands on it

I have my copy on hold at GameStop, and I plan to pick it up tonight, along with my Classic Controller Pro. I loved the game on the N64, and I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

Me and all my friends were cautiously optimistic about this game when it was announced. Glad to hear it's a solid remake, instead of a cheap port.

It's neither. A better term would be "spiritual successor". While it's very much intended to have a similar style, and invoke similar feelings as the original, it's too different a game. This is no more a remake than Super Mario Bros 3 is a remake of Super Mario Bros.

P.S. Thanks

Damn, wasn't expecting that positive of a review. Now I'm even sadder that this isn't the next game I'll be getting from GameFly.

Those should be ellipses, not commas.

OT: I want that game now. All I remember of the original Goldeneye was getting my butt handed to me by the older guys in golden gun mode.

Wow I'm genuinely surprised at the good press this game has been getting from all corners; apparently much better than the HD game

Whoever is playing on the bottom screen isn't an fps gamer right? If not, the controls look horrible!

Nice review tho, I'm tempted, but not sold on picking this up. I am a horrible person.... I didn't like the original.

I suppose playing enough with dual analog controls can warp your mind enough to consider Wiimote aiming inelegant... I'm much faster and more precise with that in the other FPSes I've played.

The bottom half of the screen was played without the Classic Controller Pro. Greg didn't comment on it in the video, but the game is really hard to play with just a Wii Remote / Nunchuck. The stick on the Nunchuck controls strafing, so the sensor bar is left to determine turning. Since it's also used for targeting, you will only turn when the cross hairs hit the extreme right or left of the screen. It makes sense for the control scheme, but I'd strongly recommend getting the Classic Controller Pro.

I wish more people would be honest about that.

You hit it on the head.

It's an average FPS, not much better than any alternative. It's getting a pass because it's got Goldeneye in the name and Bond in it.

I don't HATE it, but it does little better than the original :/.

Jesus, Perfect Dark was a better "re-imagining" than this is.

I know the Wii's graphics are limited, but I felt a little disappointed when I saw Onatopp's face in the game. It's just not the same without that psychotic smile.

In another review, I heard using the wii remote and nunchuck worked quite well. I'm just gonna assume the bottom screen player sucks :p

I don't have a classic controller pro but I think wiimote and nunchuck works (at least easier than GC controller xD), you can set practically everything so that it becomes super sensitive if you want.

Weird, it actually surprises me that someone would find the game enjoyable. I thought that Activision would make it "Call of Duty: MW2: James Bond." I might pick this up now.

Gods, that's a relief. Now that we finally have a successor to it, maybe people will stop moaning about how they need a Goldeneye for the modern era.

My main problems with this game aren't necessarily focussed on the game play itself (Despite how overused and stale it is), but the reason the game was made. See, from the look of it and several reviews I've read and videos I've watched, this game is basically Call of Duty for the Wii with the name Goldeneye slapped on.

Instead of overhauling the story, I would have preferred they overhauled the FPS genre and actually tried something different in this game just as the original did. That's why it was so popular. It dared not to conform with other games and it worked because it added something new to console games. You can't make the next big title without taking risks, but Activision took absolutely no risks here, with maybe the exception of changing the character models and story, perhaps turning a few classic players off the game. I'm not saying this game is bad at all, but what really sets this shooter apart from the other copy/pastes of Modern Warfare? That it's on the Wii? That it's got Goldeneye in the title? I'm just not sold on this one. Maybe if the price goes down in a year or two I'll pick it up.

At the very least, this game actually looks like it's good and had effort put into it unlike Rogue Agent which was just plain shameless. Anyone looking for a good FPS on the Wii should get it if they like the shooters of today and don't already own Call of Duty, but for me, this just feels like it'd be a waste of money.

good to see they didnt fuck up with the classic

but, I can say in my opinion, that it would have been better if they didnt changed Bond for Ken doll

but that's just personal nit picking, which I do to hide the fact that I may be the only one in this forum who doesnt own any next gen console, or past gen, for that matter, except a sega genesis

"You can go through the whole game shooting at everybody at a distance, especially on the easier difficulties, but I liked that I had the option of stealth if I wanted to feel more like a spy than a soldier. It's not quite Deus Ex, but the option is nice. And if you want to complete the game on the harder difficulties where health doesn't recharge, stealth is almost necessary."

This was what I was most worried this re-imagining wouldn't get right. I did love the multiplayer of Golden Eye but I played through the single player game a lot. It was amazing to me to learn that the game required stealth in the harder difficulties. Learning that firing a single burst (no more than three bullets) from the AK only alerted enemies immediately in view, rather than all enemies nearby, was insanely useful in the prison level, and hiding behind the door and shooting out the window felt ingenious to my young self.

This was the kind of game play, although perhaps evolved, that I was worried this remake wouldn't have. Emergent gameplay. I'll have to give it a try.

How good are the Wiimote+Nunchuk controls in this game when compared to, say, Metroid Prime Trilogy?

Good News! Very good news! This makes me a very sad panda though, because I do not, and never will, own a Wii. But it's a relief to hear that GoldenEye Wii doesn't ruin the wonderful memories of the legendary GoldenEye 64.

I'm assuming those controls are customisable, a la The Conduit? I remember not liking the controls on that game to begin with, so I shrunk the bounding box down to a pea and it was great fun after that.

Why does every Wii reviewer need to bash the wiimote + nunchuck setup. The game uses the same customization as MW:R and that by all accounts (including mine) worked fantastic. Not using the CCpro with this one although the option is nice for my 360 playing friends.

Tito, you gave this game a disgustingly good review.

[paraphrase]"...the shitty frame-rate on the Wii made the action sequences blurry and that actually enhanced the experience because had I been able to see what was going on, I would have surely been disappointed..."[paraphrase]

Although glaringly biased, this review is interesting because it takes well-known limitations of the Wii and ingeniously perverts them into dollops of unconditional praise.

...like being broke all the time is actually a great way to stop spending.

I didn't have time to screw around with it, but maybe? That said, as a total noob when it comes to Wii games (especially shooters), it wasn't easy for me to just pick up the Wii Remote setup and blast away at Greg.

It's probably something that players can adjust to, but as an FPS player on other consoles (360) I found it extremely difficult to deal with.

It is good to know that they just took Golden eye and just made it more current for 2010 instead of 1995.
I ams sad to know the Brosnan is not in the updated version and that is the one thing i can not let go. I like Pierce Brosnan.

So the better way to control it is with a gamepad - thereby negating the point of the Wii - so why wasn't this put on the other platforms?

I'm assuming it's some licensing thing with Nintendo.

Grrr. Not happy. I'm still refusing to buy activision products on principle but this is about the only reason I could use to convince my gf that getting a wii is a good idea (need to purchase all consoles again as I'm moving abroad). Although she does hate Daniel Craig as bond so maybe not

You might as well ask why FPSs get released for anything other than the PC.

Some people prefer mouse/keyboard.
Some prefer controller.
And if you're used to using those 2, then of course its going to play better with a gamepad. Personally, I'd probably do better with the remote/nunchuk, since I suck at FPS with controllers but have a bit more experience with the motion controls (thank you metroid prime and red steel 2).

Okay. That's No More Heroes (I and II), Madworld and now this. Make a couple more games like that instead of Super Mario 9000, and I'll consider buying your console, Nintendo.

Great pointer controls have already been accomplished on the Wii (Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, The Conduit, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor). Just because one developer screws it up doesn't make them worthless.

Yeah, it's to do with licensing issues. Nintendo still owns the rights to the concept of a Goldeneye game. Activision never does exclusives if they have the choice not to.

The video supplement of the multiplayer didn't exactly inspire confidence, either the wii controls are bad or you guys are AWFUL, there was one point where one of you was punching a wall while the other unloaded a full clip and didn't land a single shot.

Can't decide if this is worth getting the classic controller bundle. I really like the Wiimote better for FPSs. I mean, using the classic controller on a game like this would be like going to White Castle and getting a fish sandwich. It's fine every once in awhile, but why even go there if you don't want tiny smelly burgers? As far as it "not being as good" as a regular controller, it seems like most reviewers don't know about option menus. Kmart is giving away an extra classic controller with it, though. So many decisions...

I'm sorry, but I can't do this. Goldeneye was an epic, amazing game in my childhood, and I spent many, many hours running around with moonraker lasers, shotguns, and whatever weapons the various owners of N64's decided we should have. If you want to be reminded of just how good the original is.

Play this new one.

Then play the original.

Then try to figure out why I'd ever want to play this one again. It's gonna be tough, the online multiplayer is the only thing it does better.

But dude, the first one didn't even have multipla...ohhhh I see what you mean.

My words exactly. Problem is, which one should you get first...

OT: Still deciding whether to get it or not. I'm tempted by the free multi-player a little, but remembering SSBB, I have my doubts. In single player, I'm almost sold. I just can't get how you would position a pinpoint shot into someone's face. It's easy on the PC, somewhat less controlable on the console, and "dependent on your surgeon hands" for the Wii.

Ah, the good old days of split screen. Gotta love 'em!

In all honesty, it's mostly my lack of wii that prevents me from getting this. But also the fact that it's one of those games that I will always associate with multiplayer with people in the same room, and anything else would just be a little bit weird...

Yeah, you can use Gamecube Controller, but I'd imagine that the C-stick won't be the most comfortable out of all the control choices.

WHAT.

Did they really not learn the lesson that Red Steel taught every single FPS that has been made for the Wii since its release?

Metroid Prime got it right. The Conduit got it right. Medal of Honor (Heroes 2) got it right. GoldenEye didn't?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we didn't have a whole lot of time to screw around with bounding boxes and other control settings when we captured the video. It's possible that they included these features, but running mulitplayer 'out of the box' was clunky at best.

Alright. Yeah, I just found out on my own that the game does have sensitivity settings:

SzFatalxp @ GameSpot said:
Khan button layout (shake chuck to reload, Dpad-Down melee, etc)
Minimum Dead Zone
Maximum Turn Box at Full height and width of screen
Cursor sensitivity at half the bar's length
Horizontal turn speed at 60% of the bar
Vertial turn speed at 10% of the bar

With this you should be able to turn on-a-dime and kill an enemy behind you in under 1 second.

Sitting closer to the sensor bar helps sometimes too.

When the phrase "It's comparable to modern day first person shooters" is in the review can't take it seriously. It is a modern day first person shooter!!! Come one, seriously, when you compare it to MW2 or other FPS's on other consoles it just can't stand on it's own merit. Every single aspect that you pointed out can be found elsewhere, done better. Granted, it's a Bond game, meaning it has a unique story; albeit one that was already written 13 years ago. I will most likely end up picking it up because I want to have something to play when I visit my girlfriend, but I'll stick to my 360 and my PS3, where my games don't have to come with clarifications that say that they are modern day shooters.

Thanks but no thanks, for me buying this would mean wasting my money.

The N64 version was truly a step forward in gaming, this isn't at all.

I somehow doubt this game will have all the extra characters and stuff for multiplayer, if anyone can remember the unlockable "Scientist" skins and "Moonraker Henchmen" and things? :p

This game is pretty fun, but it could be better. It's got a charming simplicity, gorgeous graphics by Wii standards, and great level design, but it still feels kinda dated. I'd still rather play this than Halo.

P.S. Thanks

I just wanna start off by saying I'm glad Nintendo got exclusivity for this game, they deserve it.(I grew up with Nintendo and Sony, so pardon the fanboyism.)
I think we're forgetting that most games today are reskinned CoD games, which come on, is it that surprising? Its fracking Activision for christ sakes, thats the only kind of FPS they know how to do, but I digress, its either a reskinned CoD clone or a reskinned Halo clones these days, which in all honesty, Halo: Combat Evolved was a step in the right direction for console shooters after GoldenEye on N64, Call of Duty... Not so much. Everything after 2001 for first person shooters pretty much became trash in terms of story for campaign, but this would be Call of Duty: Done Right Edition, since the story is actually extremely good in single player, especially for a Bond game these days, and all they did for online multi was copy and paste CoD Multi with Bond characters.

Im sorry but no. The Wii, with one of the most poorly impeleneted online systems in history, is not the right place to put a great online componant. "Best multiplayer for a Wii game" is kind of like the award for "Fastest 100 metres in the obesity clinic" since you are crippled with freind codes, paradoxically an online implementation a step backwards from IP adresses we saw go over 15 years ago.

Also Things have been just swell since 2001 for shooters. This is one of the things that REALLY annoys me when people spout it and it's quite a widespread false beleif. Shooters have actually been getting better, much better, and much more unique and distinct from eachother in the past decade. allow me to create a segement callled "A list of games that shows you have no idea what you are on about". I coouldn't think of a snappier title.

Plus you'd have Epic Mickey to look forward to.

I agree with you on that, except Resistance 1. People only thought it was good because it was the first halfway decent FPS on PS3, which at the time was like saying "best multiplayer for a Wii game" =-) Seriously though, Resistance was barely a step above a rail shooter and the story was predictable.

I don't mind Daniel Craig being Bond in this. It's not so much to really complain about since before we only got Brosnan's face(Not even that good of a representation, you could substitute George Lazenby in that with ease). I am actually more sad that Sean Bean wasn't able to return to be Alec. But getting Judi Dench as M(um) is always music to my ears.
All things aside it looks as if everything that was loved about the N64 Goldeneye has returned with a bit more glitter....except one thing:
If they somehow worked an homage to that piece of nostalgia in there, I would be shocked, pleased, and giggly.

First off, where have you been, the story for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was absolute shit, not to mention extremely predictable, also, I was talking about console shooters, so Half Life 2 gets ruled out since its usually a PC only played game and is absolute crap on a console. Fallout 3 has the option of being first or third person, but if you're going to put it on there you have to include Morrowind and Oblivion in that list since they're presented in first person format as well, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is PC only, so that rules those out pretty quickly since we're only talking about Console shooters, Escape from Butcher Bay... Come on do we really need to talk about that game, if you're going to use that one at least make it the version that came with Assault on Dark Athena, that was vastly superior to the original or Directors Cut, and actually bearable to look at too, not to mention, did we really need a prequel story to Riddick? Crysis, yeap, PC game, that gets booted off the list next, not to mention they put graphics before everything else in that game, your list is starting to dwindle dude... Hmmmmmm... Lets see... Ah yes, DooM 3... If you honestly believe the story in that was good... Theres something wrong with you, they might as well have called it DooM: The Lights don't Work edition. F.E.A.R., don't make me laugh, that failed as both a FPS and a Horror game, especially with the controls. Next up, Bioshock 2, what is there to say other than they were trying to capitalize on the Big Daddies to sell this game, not to mention the original team that worked on Bioshock had no involvement on it at all, and the storyline did have the same kind of impact as the last one, and I actually enjoyed ripping the ADAM out of the little girls in the sequel, the morality of your actions wasn't clear in that one like it was in the first, not to mention, "OH YOU CAN DUAL WIELD?" well that hasn't been anything new since Halo 2. I think I'll rip The Darkness up next, oh what can I say about this one that hasn't already been said, from the horrible controls to the shitty story, this game was craptacular and shitastic, bit of advice, you want to a game with a character that has a Demon arm, play Devil May Cry 4. The Resistance games... Ah I would have loved them had it not been for them being a simple copy and paste of every other sci-fi first person shooter, basic plot summary: Single american war hero joins up with brits to combat a genetic alien virus that was spawned in... Oh Russia? You guys again? Silly ruskies, always causing trouble for the world. Metro 2033? So now we're talking about the Russian equivalent of Fallout, basic plot summary: Nuclear war with another country causes people to live underground in the Russian equivalent of a Vault dew to mutants and fallout from the bombs. You know I actually liked that game too, but the more I played it the more I realized it was basically Fallout 3: Russian Edition. So I pretty much shot down all but Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes(and I've played and beaten the third one), Far Cry, Bioshock, and Fallout 3.
Also, don't talk to me about multiplayer, because my response to that is going to be the exact same as Yhatzee's, if you're going to sell a game at full price it needs to be able to stand up on single player alone because there are problems with the multiplayer that the game itself can't help.

Awh thats cute, is that really all you could come back with, elementary grade insults? Awh I'm hurt deep down, really I am, WOUNDED even O____O, how will I ever get over it? Also congrats on misspelling *PIECE* and *ADVICE* two of the probably easiest words to spell in the English language. It's the game we thought couldn't exist, by completely throwing away the one unique feature of the Wii and going back to a standard controller?

Yes i occasionally mis-type. im in a forum and im also doing other tings so i type fast and don't bother checking as it would just slow the process down a lot. I don't be a smug litte dick and try and undermine people because they didn't spell somthing right. So next time, don't be a hypocrite

but all this distracts from the fact that you essentially think everything not on a ninendo platform is "medicore" and clearly just like going on rants bout how all these really great FPs games suck.

Speaking as somebody who's seen the film more than fifty times, I have to say how pleased I am that they've taken even more liberties with the script and settings than they did with the N64 version. >_>

Eh, I'll probably pick it up at some point, despite looking pretty much like Call Of Duty 12: Russians And A Sneaky English Bloke Edition.

two things, one less inportant than the other:

1) Did he say Daniel Crag?

2) Notice how inaccurate both players are due to their Wii controllers... a point blank firefight took at lease 20 seconds and that was only because they resorted to Melee. Not looking good when the game requires you to buy the special controller just to make it play correctly.

If its as good as they are saying it is then this game and Kirby's Epic yarn are the only Wii games I buying this year. I own an xbox my bro has the Wii but he'll understand why brothers playing the Wii for days on end when he brings Goldeneye home.

It does look pretty good, I know someone who has a Wii so if he gets it I'll give it a shot. Plus I never played the original so I guess I may be able to give an opinion that wont be distorted by nostalgia.

Also, nice touch having licensed music in the club scene.

Considering they both have admitted they don't play shooters with the Wii remote, it just shows that there is a learning curve. I woudln't expect Halo players to pick up a Mouse and Keyboard and 10 kill streak in CS:S (or maybe the other way round would a better example). Plus the settings can be tweaked.

To be honest I would have liked to see someone use those controls who has experience with pointer control, but that's what YouTube is for.

Mmm I am somewhat convince into buying this. I never play the original one due to not having the N64 and when I first saw previews of it, I felt it was just a remake and was made for nostalgia. Now that I see that it's alter quite a bit I made buy it (from the look of it, it clearly out shine The Conduit) although there is some others games I want to buy first (Donkey Knog Country Retrun and Golden Sun Dark Dawn). I guessing this will go into my xmas list.

i find it hilarious that

a) there's a good shooter on the Wii
b) there's a good shooter on the Wii and it's james bond, the one franchise little kids shouldn't be into on the console little kids are on
c) the fact that the reason this game is good is because it uses as you said "pretty much an xbox 360 controller" instead of that wii mote crap
d) the party scene is playing Deadmau5 (at a school dance last night, i urged a request to play it by writing it horizontally in big red letters and personally handed it to the DJ, but he never played any deadmau5. my freind saw the paper, but didn't know it was me who gave him that, and he took it and drew the mouse head on it and urged the request)

i've been hearing word of golden eye and i always though they were talking about the original, i didn't know they made a new one until now, thank you for the update.

"This is as good as gaming currently gets"

You're telling me this game is as good as it currently gets?

I've lost all faith in The Escapist review staff and their ability to be objective.

I'm curious as to whether or not you're able to go to the secret island in the Dam level this time.

Not getting a Wii for this but if it was for Xbox, probably even if I would want a remake of the reall one instead.

Can I play the game with a normal Gamecube controller, or do I really need to pick up the Classic Controller Pro?
I wasn't able to test this specifically but it says that you can play with the old Wavebird controller for the Gamecube.

It's a good game that I would recommend to any owner of the Wii, and that is the very definition of 5 stars for me.

Not perfect, but it's an enjoyable experience all around.

Why isn't it good? have you played it?

Thanks. Well, then I suppose it's time to force my two brothers into a game of James Bond Nightfire once again!

You feel comfortable saying this title is as good as gaming currently gets? I highly, highly doubt you can't name an FPS you enjoyed more or thought was better than this - and if you can, this game clearly isn't as good as it gets.

I never said it wasn't a good game.

Daniel Graig!?!?! That RUINED it right there.

This is NOT what we wanted Nintendo....we wanted a PORT....NOT a remake.

For Shame.

No. I will not believe that this "remake" is better than the original. The original was almost a perfect stealth, shooter, thing. All they had to do was up the graphics and make it work on a controller nowadays. But NO! They had to make it so you didn't switch through sixteen different weapons to get to your mines and NO! you don't have to slap fights but instead it's all ONE BUTTON! Which is the downfall of a lot of games. And the campaign was amazing in the original and now it looks like nothing.

I played the game today and I gotta say, without the gold controller that it comes with, the game can't be played effectively.
Other than that, it's pretty nice and makes me nostalgic for the old one on the N64.

Not a huge fan of the motion controls. I find them extremely hard to use. Think I'm just going to use my gamecube controller. I for one am pretty fed up with the whole wii motion stuff. Am I the only one who thinks it's not innovative and just a pain the ass? Honestly if nintendos next gen console is heavily reliant on motion, like the wii is, I won't be buying it.

The James Bond remake offers the best multiplayer on the Wii and an updated campaign.
