To cut to the chase. Today I went back and played some Halo combat evolved for PC. It was the most fun I had in a multiplayer game in years.

See in recent trends, competitive shooters have begun to become more frustrating and lost the the "pureness" of online action. I'll elaborate by just saying some of the few things that happened in my play session.

The map was Blood Gulch, possibly one of the simplest but exhilarating maps I've played in all online games. All of our red team had lost our vehicles because we ended up dying whenever we got close to the enemy base, thus the vehicles were stuck on the blue teams side, so we resorted to just running through the teleporter in our home base which exits halfway between the map which had great sniping spots.

Our sniping positions had the enemy team pretty much locked in, then a team of 3 blue guys got into a rocket warthog and speeded up to us, and wasted our entire squad. When we respawned we instinctively all headed for the teleporter to get revenge on the smug blue pricks. To my surprise the text appeared "Teleport Blocked". The other team had parked the warthog about the teleport exit ! They learned our strategy and countered it.

It was more hilarious than frustration. What made it all the more fun was that there was no voice or text communication, it was like everyone just knew what their teammates expected.

What I love about Halo CE is that there is no pre match preparation, no loadouts or even levels. Just plain multiplayer, everyone even runs at the same speed due to the lack of sprint. I love this bare bones no non-sense old timey feel of multiplayer shooters. No one is in it to unlock anything, they're just in the server for the fun of solid gameplay.

In contrast to today's upcoming multiplayer games, such as Titanfall, which I have little interest in or Elder Scrolls Online's PVP which looks interesting but all seem to the lack the original pure sense of what early multiplayer meant, a bunch of gameplay mechanics being fiddled about with by players online, no grand win or lose situations or experience bars to fill up. I even found GTA 5's online multiplayer just boring bland, despite the variety of modes and playstyles.

Anywho, Halo CE stands the test of time and in my opinion the newer online shooters have lost what classic games like Unreal Tournament and Quake all had.
