That must have been awkward for the celebs, but who gives a fuck about them? He's there to entertain the viewers, not the celebs.
Actually some of them thought it was HILARIOUS. Christian Bale was even clamoring for Gervais to REALLY let loose (being British himself he gets British comedy). The bribes joke was also really nasty since the HFPA (the ORGANIZERS FOR THE GOLDEN GLOBES) are currently being sued for bribes.

Should I be allowed to use this terrible "Ricky Jerk-Face" pun, or no?

For the record, Ricky Gervais is British. The sense of humour he shows in this is a very British sense of humour, and as such is common and indeed a staple of comedy here in the UK. I'm not sure how common such humour is in the USA, but in the UK that would be considered normal. Indeed, some of the best known and most successful comedians in the UK routinely get away with much worse, and British stars are mostly more than willing to take part in things that send them up in ways that would otherwise be considered offensive, for the sake of comedy. We may complain a lot as a nation, but we're also a nation who know how to take the piss out of ourselves, and out of other people, without actually being offensive.

And that, my friends, is basically all I have to say on the matter. The US and UK styles of comedy are somewhat different, and if people don't like hearing British humour then they should just hire a US comedian to do the awards next time.

That would be brilliant, and I want one!

OT: I'd go for hilarious, but that's possibly something to do with how hard it is to offend me, and the knowledge that I'd actually be flattered by the attention if those jokes were aimed at me. Maybe it's different if you're already in the public eye that much?

I have to admit, I cackled like a moron for a solid five minutes after he threw Mel Gibson under a bus.

I actually rather enjoy Ricky Gervais, and my sister recently got me into his show (which I now shamelessly podcast). Having said that, I feel it shouldn't be called "The Ricky Gervais Show", since Karl Pilkington totally steals the show almost every second of the way.

I laughed when he was on Conan talking about what he had originally planned to do. He said something like this;
Ricky Gervais said:
I had wanted to come out in a Hitler costume right? Doing the salute ya know? Seig Heil. Sieg Heil. And then I'd walk over to the podium, look out and shake my head saying something like,"wrong crowd. That's the last time I ever borrow a suit from mel Gibson"
That would've been funny. I still think he's a great comedian but he said he was going to go all-out so who blames him?

I suddenly want to play GTA4 and head to the comedy club...

See if his work in that was any good.

I think, given these reactions, that the HFPA might do well to bring a contrite Gervais back next year, but I might not bother watching it. Will he ever be back? Is Hollywood a bunch of babies? Are drunk celebrities fun to watch, or is that one just me?
ALL OF HOLLYWOOD IS BABIES!
I love you. So much.

As Yahtzee would say, "You don't hire a waste manager to redesign your bathroom and you don't come to me to hear what's good about a game!"

Ricky Gervais doesn't play nice. DWI.

Ricky Gervais, you are no Norm MacDonald. Some of Norm's jokes are pretty dated since it was 1998, but this is how you do a takedown.

wow, Ricky pales in comparison to this guy. He is just as funny, but man, you could tell a lot of people got pissed from that.

Yes YES! Find him! NOW!

OT: I say he should rip them harder. Some of these celebrities need to be taken down a couple notches.

Conclusion:
Ricky Gervais is one of the worst comedians ever.
Fair enough, personally I really like him but I think he's gotten a bit self-important. He always played that role, I like to believe, ironically but he seems to be going for it whole heartedly.

As would I. But I don't think anyone would turn up. But apparently Mr Boyle is retiring from stand up, I got his latest DVD and he says on it "it's my last tour and I don't give a F*** anymore"

(I'm not sure if we can swear on the escapist, probably for the best since I'm sure a few young people peruse this site. But then again you did just link to a video involving violence in a hotel room and anti-Semitism)

I fail to see the big deal here. Ricky Gervais, whether you love him, hate him, or are indifferant is hired to put on a show for an awards ceremony. He has as trademark style of "roast" humor, and the people attending know this. He put on the routine he was hired to do, I doubt anyone with half a brain in that audience took it too seriously or was all that offended even if it was biting. The thing about an Awards ceremony presenter like that is that he's doing it more for the crowd viewing the thing than the audience actually attending. The Celebrities are there to entertain us, and one of the ways they do that is by getting ribbed by another celebrity.

Whining about this is like hiring Yahtzee to do more videos to be played for the game industry, and then complaining because he has nothing nice to say about any of the games or people he mentions. It's his schtick. :p

I don't think Ricky Gervais was the best host I've ever seen for this kind of thing, but he did okay.

He was damned funny. The only reason the mood was uncomfortable was because of the reactions from the tightass audience, not because he was violating anybody's code of decency.

Poor, poor celebrities. How dare they not be exalted as the deities they are. I mean, without people like Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg or Tom Hanks how would we even know who to vote for?

F the Hollywood elite. They're all a bunch of crack whores and male escorts that happened to bang the right producer.

What I don't understand about the whole "he's gone too far" bit everyone's using now is that people were actually complaining about his performance last year being too timid. You can't have it both ways, friends.

Don't really like Ricky Gervais, but THAT was insulting?

Is it next year Frankie Boyle's on instead? (Damn...already got that one...)

Ok, how about Mr. Gilbert Gottfried who made a joke about 9/11 about a week after it happened and then dropped into "The Aristocrats" to save it?

Or Stephen Conroy laying the "truthiness" down on George Bush?

If you're going to an Awards dinner, why are you even surprised that someone is gonna roast you?

And Mr. Charlie Sheen, you're the guy that doesn't believe 9/11 wasn't due to the Government? You've beaten up your wife, abused cocaine and alcohol, threatened your ex-wife, locked a woman in your bathroom while you tore up a hotel room and you think he owes you anything?

I'd have laid in even harder.

Frankie Boyle doing an awards ceremony - OHH yes please, make it a christmas episode!

Uptight celebrities thinking they're important because of their job and who they are being mocked for their lifestyle - aww bless HTFU or change your lifestyle. I haven't watched it (it's an awards ceremony after all), but I haven't heard him mock the performers for their performances so that's alright then isn't it?

Meh. Ricky Gervais is overrated. His speech started off well, but after a while he bores me. But stupid enough for committee for hiring him again if they don't like this.
