Rockstar Games Now Available Via Steam

Steam [http://www.rockstargames.com/]digital distribution service, and are celebrating the launch with a 10 percent discount on all Rockstar purchases.

Beginning today, the entire Wild Metal Country [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_(series)] will be available for purchase via Steam. The ten percent discount will apply throughout the first week of launch.

"We were immediately excited by the opportunity to offer our PC catalog via Steam because it allows us to reach out to gamers around the world in exciting new ways," said Rockstar's Rowan Hajaj. "We are continually looking for ways to give back to our fans and this collaboration will give people a chance to easily revisit some of our greatest titles."

Steam Director of Business Development Jason Holtman added, "Rockstar Games brings some of the most viscerally engaging games the industry has ever witness to Steam's expansive library of titles. We're delighted to provide a place where gamers across the globe can discover all the fine work Rockstar Games has produced."

First revealed in 2002, Steam has grown to become one of the most popular digital distribution services available, and currently boasts over 200 games and 13 million users. I wish they offered their 'classic' games through Steam (GTA, GTA2, Wild Metal) as their own package, or individually. I'd pay (though not too much) for the convenience of having Steam handle the download and installation, even though the games themselves are offered for free on Rockstar's site [http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/wmc.html].

I'm not going to buy their other packages though - I'd rather play the copies I already have on the console. It'd be a good deal if you'd never played them though.

It's a very good move for both Valve and Rockstar. The beginning of a partneship that will benefit gamers as well and probably make both developers a fair bit of cash. Now if only Steam worked with Xbox Live...

I understand Virgil's reluctance to buy the games that he already has on other platforms. I do have to say however, that GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas are at their best when played on the PC and now that you can use your 360 controllers with XP and Vista it makes the always frustrating helicopter fight sections easier to play. Imagine playing San Anreas without getting stopped in your tracks by a tree that just materializes out of nowhere, nailing your brand new Banshee or motorbike?
