RPGs where you can be a summoner

I'm interested in playing a game where I can be a summoning mage/necromancer and have it done well. I tried being a summoner in Oblivion, but then I could never level up because I don't get credit/xp for any hits the thralls take or dish out.

So what I'm asking is for some good RPGs where you can still gain XP while summoning.

For discussion value, how about we discuss some games where the playstyle you would like to have used was handled too ineptly for your taste. EX: Bad stealth mechanics, poor diplomacy options, always get zerg rushed and can't build cool base full of sweet troops and tech, etc.

...Summoner?
Seriously, that could work.

Otherwise, the Shin Megami Tensei games always seem to go for a sort of summony aspect if you're looking for a more JRPG feel. Can't think of much else, sorry.
Incredibly quick edit: Games like Diablo and Torchlight maybe? They always seem to have either a pure summoner class, or at least a summoner skill tree of sorts.

Geneforge... it is the PERFECT game for you. Buy all 5 of them immediately (or at least get the demos) http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html

I played and loved Persona 3, but I guess I should have clarified that I'm looking for more of a Western-type RPG.

I'll check out Summoner and Torchlight, I hadn't heard of the former and never really looked at the latter.

Ah. [sub][sub]But go and get Persona 4 anyway it's AWESOME.[/sub][/sub]
Just looked through my Steam list, maybe Neverwinter Nights could fulfill your summoning thirst, if you don't mind having to use other spells as well. Maybe even NWN2 as well, if you can get the damn thing to work. It's honestly the buggiest games I've ever played, so be careful before you buy it.

I remember playing a demo of a Geneforge game, cool stuff!!!!!!!!!! right now is in my "to play list".
But it's a game for people who apreciate story, good game mechanics and posibilities over graphics, like dwarf fortress ;)

If you play a Conjuration Wizard this goes well. You already get a Transmuter (the opposed school of magic) later on.

Also, doesn't DA:O have options like this?

I agree here... I didn't play it much I wish I did, but I forgot what it was called for the longest time... blah blah etc...

Game was fun, and sounds exactly like what the OP was referring to, not stellar graphics of course but none the less fun for sure.

I think as a ranger you could summon like, a wolf or a bear once at a time, but otherwise, not much summoning/necromancy going on.

You could always get one of the pokemon games and pretend that you are summoning the monsters instead of a 10 year old enslaving monsters to do your bidding.... Wait they sound like exactly the same thing

So obvious: Baldur's Gate and especially Baldur's Gate 2!

Jaheira can summon fire elementals (seriously, they kill everything) and you can play as a conjurer. Or play as a druid too. Then you can summon even more fire elementals. And bears.

While you said you wanted western-type RPGs, I think Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne could appeal to you as well. You only have one human being on your team, and all the other playable characters are demons who serve you [small](oh and MegaTen predates pokemon)[/small]. Demons are acquired by convincing them to join you (by giving them stuff and answering their philosophical questions "correctly") and/or fusing them. You don't actually cast any summoning spells, but the end result is the same.

That, and it had a problem of unsummoning them whenever you went to a new zone.

OT: I would have to say that if you really wanted it, NWN2 is a good option, if you play a druid. They can convert any prepared spell into a summoning spells. Conjuration wizards only lose on Transmutation spells (which really are not that great). Or, you can be a Sorcerer who focuses on Conjuration. But be sure to have some Evocation spells there as well.

I have being playing Dungeon Siege lately and it does a pretty good job at handling summoned creatures, in DS2 you can even attempt to tame inter dimensional monsters as a quest, kind of cool, give it a look (i got the pre order of Dungeon Siege 3 and they gave me 1 and 2 for free)

Overlord you are sort-of a summoner, the game is a bit lighter than stuff like Oblivion in terms of, well, everything, but it's still pretty fun. Could also try rolling a conjurer in Neverwinter Nights, or play the Bards Tale, where you do nothing but summon stuff.

You could try guild wars, im almost too ashamed to say it but ive spent 400 hours JUST playing on my necromancer :(

Its a pretty good skill system, where you can mix summoning minions n stuff with hexes and other stuff, or you could go full either way, and then swap for the next quest.. you're never forced into one role.

and the kills get you xp :)

You could also be a ritualist and summon spirits, but i've never tried playing as that class.

hmm, probably not what you're looking for, but, kartia, jade cocoon, brigandine, monster rancher, the deception series or trapt, are all good old summoning based games. the deception series and trapt are particularly intersting if you like brutalizing your enemies rather than simply killing them.
