Just curious as to whether you know of any RTS games that have units that go from level to level (i.e I make them in level 1, they continue on through the campaign until they die). If you've played the original Battle for Middle Earth, then you know what I mean.

Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2 both use this mechanic. Homeworld is from 1999, Homeworld 2 is from 2004.

The Close Combat series does it quite well. Experience carries over, but so do casualties to the unit. You can opt to leave a particular unit out of the coming battle in order to get it reinforced, thus losing out on any experience, but also avoiding the risk of losing it, and thus having to buy a new unit.

Warzone 2100 does this and it is pretty important for a variety of reasons. Also your main base is persistent between missions.

the homeworld games are AMAZING if you can get used to playing in 3 dimensions....remember the enemys gate is down honestly tho best RTSs i had ever played until i played Company of Heroes

i know company of heroes had this aspect to some extent but not every unit was carried on to every level just some of the units that achieved rank

Dawn of War II but that game is RTS/RPG

if you want a slightly older game try Silent Storm which can be switched from RTS to turn based personally i LOVED this game but none of my friends did

also some of the newer Red Alert games did this (Red Alert 2 did) but it is similar to Company of Heroes it brings along a few of your highest vet units from map to map

final recommendation is the original Dawn of War, the final expansion added a conquest style campaign where you were able to "save" units from battle to battle and pay to inject them into your starting base as elite free units to bolster your base early and flesh out your army later and were saved between battles as long as the unit was not wiped out in the last battle.

Warcraft 3 kinda does that with hero units during the campaign. Generic units don't transfer from level to level but the heros keep levels/items across maps of the campaign. Though if they die you can bring them back (or you lose depending on the particular map).
