RTS With Customizable Army

Hello, fellow Escapists! I just have a quick question, and am not entirely sure where to put it, so I'll ask here.

Does anyone know of an RTS where you can customize the look of your army? Like, having an army or Amazons, or guys in robes or whatever.

If you have any ideas, I'd be happy to hear them!

Thank you for your time, Escapist!

PS: If you know of an RTS or any game where you can play an all female faction, that would be awesome as well.

Dawn of war 1 to some extent but 2 more so, the problem with 2 is there is no base building ... it's more about moving guys, using abilities etc.

In one there is an expansion to get the sisters of battle (I think that is what they are called), which an all female army but they're not great.

Well what I have heard about Empire Earth it sounds like it might be what you are looking for. You can create your own race. I can't really go into detail because I never played it I only heard about it on the tgs podcast. Get the first one not the 2nd or 3rd.

Earth2150 had some pretty good customization. You could put almost any weapon you researched on any type of chassis and use different combinations if the chassis had more than one weapon slot. Dunno about 2140 and 2160, but I think they might have that as well.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've tried all of those to date, except for Earth 2160 (bought it but haven't touched it...) and in terms of customization I was speaking more aesthetically than anything. The suggestions are great though. :)

Impossible Creatures [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impossible_Creatures] is an RTS in which you can customize not only the appearance of each unit, but its function as well.

Stuff can get real nutty.

I remember being young and reading about that game and my little face was like 0.0 while reading about that game in a mag, seeing the tiger head on a scorpion body.

(I was 14)

Still haven't played it to this day.

It is the same with earth 2160. It has been awhile since I played those but I think of the the whole series I would recommend 2160

Spore had something like this... although it's slightly limited since you can't really create human units.

Sword of the stars and it's expansion has customizable ships. More based on what they can do rather than look so much. Most of it too is turn based, but with real time combat. Figured I'd put it out there.

Oh hell yeah. Ratlobsters, Antwhales, Lemmingsharks...you can make some stupid awesome stuff in this game.

I can't really think of any other RTS games with much unit customization though unfortunately. Dawn of War 2 does however force you to be really selective about what type of units make up your army in a game, thanks to the relatively low unit cap and units gaining experience. There are a number of valid unit compositions each of the armies can have, you don't necessary need to get 'a bunch of this unit and a bit of that unit' to win and while some unit combinations work much better depending on what kind of enemies you're facing you aren't really forced to build your force a particular way to be successful.

The Shogun 2 Avatar Campaign (and hopefully rome 2 will have this feature) had the possibility to get veteran units which could be customized on appearance, name and in their traits over time. Your avatar/general himself is also customizable with lots of cool hats to unlock on single and multi-player. this is only for multi player use though, would have been good on the campaign.

Other than that, Dawn of War 1/2, spore is pretty basic in unit creation - you only ever make one type for most of the game. then you only have one spaceship for eternity.

cant think of any others for now.

EDIT: There's always mods

Have you heard of Fallen Enchantress? The game can be a bit of a mess, with so many disparate elements but it has what you ask for.

I heard about it, but I haven't tried it yet. I might have to try that out.

Except it's not a RTS, heh.

There are a couple of overhauls for Rome:Total War which introduces the all-female Amazon faction:

and

Only tried the first one, seemed pretty solid.

Settlers 3 had an Amazon faction if you bought one of the expansions.

Not exactly, no. Turn based instead of real time, with some RPG thrown in as well, BUt should we really disqualify it because of that? It's the best game i have found in terms of making your own army, which is what the OP seems to be after.

Anyway OP, here is the Escapist review:

I remember Tom Clancy's: Endwar had customizable armies as well. You start the campaign choosing between various battalions that allow you to choose how many of which type of unit you wanted in your resource pool. You could go on to customize the looks and upgrades of each type of unit in your regiment as well. I probably remember it too fondly because after a while the game felt samey and repetitive, but I really enjoyed it at the time.

Competative pokemon is plenty customizable, although it isn't an RTS, or probably what you're looking for.

It's free if you use a simulator like Pokemon showdown, or Pokemon Online.

In Empire Earth 2, the expansion let's you build your own nation.
I'm not sure about the first Empire Earth. I think EE2 is more balanced, the priests in the first one could literally summon volcanos under armies. EE2 had ICBM that flattened armies, though. When my friends and I play we always have an agreement not to use nukes.
