Rumor: Batman: Year One Getting Animated

Is one of the most critically acclaimed Batman comics of all time getting made into an animated movie?

Rumors are circulating that Batman: Year One [http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Year-One-Frank-Miller/dp/1401207529/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276594042&sr=8-1], the comic that shows Bruce Wayne's tentative first steps towards becoming the Dark Knight we all know and love, is being turned into an full-length animated feature.

The rumor also puts Sam Liu [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0515005/] in the director's chair, a veteran of multiple animated comic book movies and TV shows. Liu has quite a bit of Batman experience, having directed several episodes of The Batman [http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Complete-Season-Comics-Collection/dp/B000CEXFZ6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276594147&sr=8-4] TV show, as well as the Superman/Batman: Public Enemies [http://www.amazon.com/Superman-Batman-Public-Enemies-Blu-ray/dp/B0027FG29Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276594266&sr=1-1] and Batman vs. Dracula [http://www.amazon.com/Batman-vs-Dracula-Jeff-Bennett/dp/B000A59PLU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276594364&sr=1-1] animated movies.

Batman: Year One was written by Frank Miller - of Sin City and 300 fame - back in 1987 and has been reprinted multiple times since then. The story was in the process of being adapted into a live action movie by Darren Aronofsky in 2000, but was eventually shelved by the studio.

Is there even any point to this? Batman Begins was so similar to Year One they needn't bother

Am I the only one who never really cared how Batman became Batman? All I need to know is that his parents were killed infront of him and thus Batman is born.

Cue the larger than life villains.

Winced, when I saw that he directed Public Enemies.

I mean, in terms of action I thought it was decent, but I thought the writing was downright offensive.

Really shoddy work, and perhaps I'm reading too much into it, also tremendously sexist. I don't know the character of Power Girl too well, but here's how I saw her character arc in the film: She's working for President Luthor (with some reservations, which is more than I can say for the rest of the league), but when these concerns grow they are essentially massaged away by Lex, in a scene where she might as well have misplaced her brain it's so dumbfounding. Then she spends the entire battle between Bats/Supes and the villains and other heroes, on the sidelines, "conflicted" about her allegiances and even when she comes to a decision her only contribution to the entire film is to kill the traitor and force Captain Atom to sacrifice himself, all accidentally.

Then there is the disservice done to Amanda Waller, who basically spends the entire film subservient to Lex, apparently secretly attracted to him, and then tossed aside when he goes schizo from kryptonite steroids. This characterisation is horrific when compared to the Timm-verse version, who's first act on screen, was to reveal and prove to Batman that she knew his identity, to his face.

Am I reading too much into it?

Not that I mind, I'm sure it will be awesome, but do we really need to be told Batman's origin story AGAIN? I know there are better Batman story arcs to tackle out there

Get Kevin Conroy to voice Batman again and this will be a hit.
Nah, we need to go to our roots. Adam West.

If it is done similar to the animates series of the 90's then I am happy with it :)

That's kind of cool I guess... I didn't really like Year One that much, but I'll probably check it out anyway

I watched Batman VS Dracula, and Public Enemies. They where both great i particularly enjoyed the latter.

If this is half as good as those i will watch it.

I didn't come off with that feeling from the movie at all. Amanda Waller was doing her job as a member of the Presidential Cabinet and as a servant to the American people. Lex Luthor was elected by the people of the United States to lead the country, and was her boss. And as for the secret attraction, it was apparent that Lex harbored such feelings for her (both in the comic and movie) as he is the one who kisses her. But the love seemed strictly unrequited.

As for her being tossed aside? She was the one who did the right thing in the end to protect the American people.

In the movie she was the one who used her position to bring Luthor to justice, and exonerate Batman and Superman. IIRC in the comic she just ended up in jail.

So that's hardly being tossed aside. That's a powerful woman whose character was given justice.

And as for Batman: Year One, we already have Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Begins which were both loose adaptations. Although, not the same as the comic, they were both fine movies and great Batman movies. I think the comic is enough.

Batman Begins and Mask of the Phantasm, both perfect adaptations of it, why bother covering the same ground with everything? At least wait 10 or so years, not now.

There are plenty of good stories to adapt, hell, why don't they adapt The Long Halloween? I haven't even read most of it, but judging from what's said about it I'd rather they go and do that.
