you have to realize that a lot of the money they make gets dumped into keeping their severs for their games and Steam servers running as well to pay the salaries of these people as well as the developers. keeping gamers happy isn't cheap.

On Valve's part, the move might be a smart one, giving it access to funds and a relatively hands-off publisher, which is something that it seems to like. We've contacted both Valve and Zenimax for comment and will keep you updated.
It also gives them dependency, something they do NOT like at all.

And Valve doesn't seem short on funds... Between Steam and the seemingly devastating success that L4D2 is.

Personally, not a good move. They don't seem like companies that would blend well at all.

I was under the impression that VALVe had enough disposable income to purchase the moon at this point.

No no no.

I doubt its true (and even if it was Valve would never allow themselves to be bought by someone), but there needs to be competitiveness.

These, and @ rumour

Doubt it.
This, however, if Valve continued to develop their games in the same way and they weren't changed in the slightest, just with better distribution opportunities, then I'd be fine with it... If they accept it and then episode 3 turns out to be bad or different or both, I will literally kill someone.

Here I make my stand.

Gamers; Brothers, let them not do unto Half Life and L4D as they did unto Oblivion and Fallout.

Together they will form: Balve.

Erm, Vasthesda?

Valesda!

...oh, screw it. This is harder than that time I tried to think up a better name of L4D2.

Trust me, if they offer, Valve won't accept. They already make piles of money on their own, their a well known and highly held company, and judging from interviews I've seen with some of Valves head honchos such as Gabe Newell and Doug Lombardi, they want to remain independent, that way they can take time making their games, rather than being forced by a parent company (The business equivalent of a bodily tumour) to shove as many games out as they possibly can within harsh time limits. If they did accept, I can guarantee you Gordon Freeman would soon start looking less like this humble figure Valve have spent years building

And more like this to appeal to other markets

'Sides, Valve listens to their fanbase, and judging by what's been posted on this thread over a little rumour, I couldn't imagine the kind of response they'd get if they went public with the decision IF THERE IS ONE! (Which I highly doubt).

At first, I didn't like the idea. But then I realized that Bethesda/Valve could create Episode 3 even faster.

bethesda might want valve for the game engine to run decent graphics. I loved fallout 3, but gotta admit the graphics sucked. Also most of their games kick ass. Then again rushing out games for a parent company sounds like developer hell.

Holy Pyro, Newell-man! (Yes, I know that was a lmae pun, but I've been out on a pub crawl and at a club so forgive me for sounding a bit forced with my drunken humour...)

I think Valve would be better off declining, assuming this bid is for real. Valve have always been one of my favourite developers and a large reason for this is that, being independent, they can do what they want to do (which is usually beneficial for the gamer as wll as the company) and they have a lot more creativity and innovation involved in their products. Being sold to Bethesda, while Bethesda is admittedly a greta developer also, won't do Valve any favours in the long run. The best thing is if things stay as they are. Fine, change can be good. But right now, change is probably not the best thing for Valve, or the industry itself...

ZeniMax is so hands-off that I don't think this will be a big game changer for us. It could lead to more funds for valve, and that's always good. So why not?

If Bethesda's TES:V schedule and VALV[sup]E[/sup]'s HL2:Ep3 schedule are in any way allowed to mingle...

My calculations show that no new games will come out of either of those companies for eight and a half eons.
Just imagine if somehow Blizzard got involved. A new word would have to be made because a release date of 'in an eternity' wouldn't cut it.

If they are as hands off as everyone is saying I don't really care. I just hope that they don't over finance Valve and turn "Half Life 2: Episode 3" into the next "Dukem Nukem Forever" money sink.

Hmmm....so this means we will get a Valve now forced to run by a responsible release schedule?

Don't talk about miracles before they happen.

Why fix Valve if they aint broke? And they're not. After LFD2 theyll be raking it in even more copious amounts.
