I think this is a great move. Valve and Bethesda are the greatest company ever. Together they could rule the world.
I agree!
Infinity Ward should partner up with them too.

Interesting. At least they're not being purchased by Disney.
What an absolute nightmare.

Half-Life 3! Including: no blood, singing flowers and overly cute kittens!! Only on Wii!!

I would like to see this happen. Valve would have tons of money to work on their games, but you know Bethesda would want a cut of the Steam sales. I think Bethesda is a good fit though since id's stuff comes out once in a very great while and it seems John Carmack likes the partnership he has with them. But the real question is, will Gabe Newell want this to happen? Either way, you know all the fanboys are gonna come out of the woodwork if this does happen like they did with Left 4 Dead 2.

LOL, as if. Valve will NEVER be bought by another company.
Spoken by a true expert of the business.

I wonder what this would mean, if anything, for the future of Steam?
Probably not much, except there is going to be more games to buy on the platform.

Bethesda is great, but I don't want my most respected game developer to be bought out :*(, it conjures sad memories of my other favorite (yes I have two, sue me) developer Bioware being consumed by the horrible monster they call Electronic Arts

EDIT: Actually, with Valve's epic story telling and always entertaining gameplay mechanics, and Bethesda's famous open world design, if done correctly, they could make a *gasp* MEGAGAME!

Lawls at all the Valve fanboys/girls. You'd think somebody stole their houses or something. Seriously people grow the fuck up.
Hey, it beats being a fan of Twilight right? As least Valve EARNED its fanbase

I am wary of the buyout, but anyone who is downright pissed needs to calm down

eeeeeh....I don't want it to be so but the more I think about it, it wouldn't be so bad, seeing as they've let Bethesda do their thing and Fallout and Oblivion were pretty awesome.

Hm.
1. Creating a full-price sequel a year after the broken original.
2. Offering exclusive content to people who pre-order.
3.

I think we can now fill in number 3.

Valve is a big boy now, it can stand up all by itself.
Valve is already super awesome, it doesn't need another company to take over its awesomeness.

This "Valve is huge!" commentary is a little weird. Valve is actually kind of a boutique. They have fewer than 200 employees (http://www.valvesoftware.com/about.html), and put out tidily polished small-scale gems rather than gigantic sprawling mega-games like Bethesda's. They're owned by a single dude!

And that's the crux of the issue: if Gabe Newell wants to sell for any reason, he can. When he dismissed the rumored EA buyout a few months ago, he was careful not to dismiss the possibility of a buyout from somebody. If he decides he's sick of waiting for a big release to be really flush, or ready to retire and looking for a big bonus to fritter away, or even remorseful for allowing the Steam forums to exist, he can sell and it's no longer his responsibility.

I personally hope the rumor isn't true, and if it is, I'd rather there were little or no cross-traffic between Valve and Bethesda creative teams. Valve games are the aforementioned small-scale gems; Bethesda games are colossal open worlds. The two approach design from totally different directions.

so maybe they'll actually develop for more than just m$ systems and give up excuses of "not having the man power" or something equally as bad
You abbreviate Microsoft's name with a dollar sign like they're the only company around that's all about the money...

Hilarious.

Especially when you seem to imply that Sony and Nintendo, of all companies, are better...
They all form a screwed-up family, really. Sony is the jocky older brother, Microsoft is the nerdy middle child, and Nintendo is the little tyke that occasionally attempts to act like the older siblings.

I guess that makes the PC the dad. But who's the mom?

Certainly not Bobby Kotick.
Lol. I like the analogy.

Of course, going on the actual age of the companies, Nintendo is 50 years older than Sony... But, whatever. XD

(Nintendo founded: 1889 ; Sony approx; 1945 ; Microsoft 1975)

In fact, the same thing can be said of their console history - Nintendo: 1985, Sony 1994, Microsoft, 2001.

Still, I know that's not what you meant, is it?
