Rumor: EA Planning Shooter Showdown for Battlefield 3

I'm certain the only reason the CoD games sell so much is that the extreme fans buy about a dozen copies each because they want to play it so much. Yep....logical.

Personally, I don't like either series, since FPS games have rather died in the last five years. I'll gladly pay full game price for GTA San Andreas again that even get a Call of Duty game or a Battlefield game for less than half price. At least it took thirty hours just for the main missions. And I loooove exploring massive open world areas. Running along corridors gets boring. Very quickly.

Oh my. Two extremely similar games released on the same day.

Shall I choose CoD: The Next One, or Battlefield: The CoD Clone? Perhaps I should go out and find a game that hasn't already been made a dozen times in the past five years.

Oh, is that so, EA?

Well, there's no way in hell I'm getting anything over Modern Warfare 3, especially your game, when all you talk about is how much you want to beat that game instead of focusing on making a sequel to Battlefield 2, the best online game ever made.

If all you're planning to do is rip off CoD again (no, I don't hear you, Bad Company 2 might be nothing like CoD online, but campaign-wise it is a shameless, inferior knock-off) and you're giving console users an inferior online experience, why, oh why, should I bother?

Alright, I'll probably get both, but if I am forced to choose, it's easily MW3.

EA, why don't you try showing a picture of Battlefield 3 that isn't bogged down with grey and brown crap?

So far, they've spent too much time obsessing over beating CoD, and not enough talking about the actual game.

Is it just me that thinks that this is a bad idea?

I mean, I'm sure Battlefield 3 will be awesome and everything, but Call of Duty has an extreme fanbase and they sell ridicoulusly many copies of each game.
With you on that. Really bad idea, early bird gets the worm and all that, all they're going to do is have their sales suffer from gritty shooter OD. Well, unless they're so confident that people are tired of CoD that they'll drop the thing and switch over double time... good luck with that!

So now Battlefield fans have to wait eagerly for the release date of the next as-yet-unnanounced COD? Isn't that a bit ironic for a game hoping to beat it?

Makes me wonder how good a game can be if it's presided over by someone who chooses release dates based on a massive ego.

I don't see myself buying either one. I don't do multiplayer, and I remain unconvinced of the value of their singleplayer campaigns. I also sympathize with the notion that both series have become repetitive lately.

Releasing Battlefield 3 the same week as Modern Warfare 3 is just plain stupid. It'd have a hard time beating that ridiculous monolith's sales even if it didn't come out the same week. Sheesh, might as well set a bonfire of 1000 dollar bills alight on the EA parking lot.

Bad Company 2 on it's own is VASTLY superior to just about any other multiplayer shooter out there. It's a ***** to get the hang of at first, but once you settle into the groove and begin to understand it, it's an amazing experience.

Playing Conquest and watching those tickets drain away, when both teams have 10 tickets left, it feels like sudden death over time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It's an amazing feeling to pull a win out. It feels like tug of war sometimes. It's a major team effort to pull it off. You need each other to succeed, period.

Modern Warfare... you get a bunch of dudes running around worrying about their own personal scores. They get enough kills, then they press a button for free bonus kills. There is zero team focus, zero payoff to anyone but the best of the best, and honestly there just isn't much to it.

I don't see how EA can fail with Battlefield 3. It's going to be an excellent game. It will NOT sell as well as MW3... but I blame that on hype. I know people who will buy CoD just because it's CoD. They come to work and complain all day long about the game, but won't try Bad Company 2. It's the Halo effect. A game that has no business being as glorified as it is... It was a stand out title that caught the attention of a bunch of people who have never heard of the MANY other BETTER games out there.

I'm saying this and I really, really liked CoD4... I loved CoD2... but it no longer innovates. It's no different than it ever was. There's no point for a NEW game to come out. Same graphics, just new guns/perks/maps/theme. DLC anyone?
Yea speaking of that DLC

First time I've heard of DLC being announced months before the game even freaking releases...
Which just happens to be 4 maps from Battlefield 2....yea.

If the game is clearly better (I suspect it is, but we haven't actually seen anything from cod3 yet) I think this is a good move from a marketing point of view. If they release them too separate they might get critical acclaim but could still be biting the dust. Launching at the same time might get them what they need, but it is risky business.

But getting the 'title' is worth a shitload of money of course, they might 'kill' the cod franchise then and there, but then again, they might also find themselves in the bargain bin.

The thing is, the signs are there that cod3 will be a massive cock-up, if that's the case they can put on maximum pressure. But even if CoD3 is just a copy of CoD2 they'll have trouble :p

Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3 on consoles. That seems to be an inevitability, due to the fact that CoD is very much in the mainstream. There is quite a lot of positive hype from PC gamers about Battlefield 3, however, and I wouldn't mind betting on Battlefield 3 to outsell Modern Warfare 3 on PCs.

I dont want Battlefield 3 to be the new COD.
BF3 wont win anyway.
Its got no killstreaks, small maps, perks and whatnot.
Its better to be in the BF community, its less popular, means theres alot less kids who just play for kills.

Silly EA, that's not how you beat CoD. You wait till a few months later, when the Juggernaut has run out of steam, and all the fans are bored (which I know from personal experience does happen). Then you begin a massive and very visible marketing campaign informing all these CoD fans that battlefield 3 is what they want to scratch the itch that they'd normally have to wait another half a year for. Then release it, and watch as the Call of Duty fanbase is split in two between those claiming it's a stupid ripoff (who will still buy the next CoD) and those who love BF3 more (and so will be buying the next Battlefield rather than CoD). Then cackle evilly as the spectacular flamewars unfold - I mean, um, as you get some extra customers. Yes, that's totally what I meant to say.

Every successive press release from EA about BF3 seems to get stupider and stupider. Stop trying to be such an over-the-top direct competition with lousy CoD! Just make a good game and put it out!
Focusing so narrowly on competing with CoD is a plan bound for failure.
