Rumor: Expensive This is Vegas Not Worth the Gamble

This is Vegas's expensive development was taken over by Warner Bros. once Midway bit the dust, but it may have been canceled anyway.

Warner Bros. Interactive Studios bought almost every asset from the failing Midway last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92873-Midway-Sale-Approved-Studios-Still-Facing-Closure], which included This is Vegas, on which tens of millions of dollars had already been spent. Those millions may now have been flushed down the tubes, as sources close to CVG are saying that This is Vegas has been canceled, and its developer Surreal Software was quietly shut down with employees dispersed amongst other projects.

"Apparently the entire This is Vegas project has been totally canned," said a "cast iron" source supposedly close to the project. "Midway spent in the region of $43 million up to the point when it was being sold to Warner Bros. Alan Patmore, who was [Surreal Software] studio boss, either left or was let go - but considering the resources and art created this is a lot of work down the drain."

The source says This is Vegas was on track for release at the end of 2009, but required 8-12 months of more development with a "studio burn rate of $250,000 per month." The game was an open world Grand Theft Auto [http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Playstation-3/dp/B000HKP88C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282685876&sr=8-1]-style experience where players had to bring the grit back to Las Vegas after businessmen were trying to make it family friendly.

"It's a ridiculous waste of money, a silly budget when you think that games like Konami's Blacklight: Tango Down [http://www.amazon.com/SAW-Playstation-3/dp/B002CYWJWO/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282686219&sr=8-11] was made for $2.5 million," the source believes. Games like these aren't easy to make, and This is Vegas had the poor fortune to be caught up in the dissolution of Midway, so perhaps Warner Bros. didn't think it was worth it to finish the game up. The rumors of This is Vegas's cancellation have not yet been officially confirmed.

It doesn't sound like anyone is missing out on much. I can't see how bringing grit back to Las Vegas is supposed to make a fun video game.

Like I said before: Sounds like a bad Hollywood movie.

I know. It basically sounds like a virtual party simulator.

But seriously, $43 million for what amounts to a GTA-clone? I don't mean to be rude, but with decisions like that, it's no wonder that Midway went out of business.

Good riddance. This game would just be another excuse to continue the anti-videogame movement.

Exploring Las Vegas and experiencing what happens there stays there? Win. Bringing the grit back to Vegas? Not so win. Sounds like someone at Midway misses the mafia days at Vegas. Probably watched Casino one too many times. And now WB has to foot the bill.

RIP Midway.

Shame, really. It could've been fun... then again, the whole project could've been an exercise in getting easy money.

"Yeah, we'll make this... oops, we're no longer able to make it, oh well, money.

It was a case of where 43 million looked better than losing 100 million. Either way thats alot of money going to waste

If it takes 43 million to spare us another crappy looking game then I'm happy about it.

Whenever a developer mentions a different game when describing their own game, it amounts to a shitty clone.
What a waste of money this was.

This is just part of the reason game prices will never go down. These companies spend exorbitant amounts of money on nothing and then ***** that they aren't making enough profit. Then as a way of making back some of the money on games such as this that never see the light of day they sell map packs for $15 and complain about used game sales as a way they are losing money.

When you spend that much money on a game, even if it didn't turn out as good as they had hoped they could still sell it as a budget title and recoup some of their money back. Then again if they did that they wouldn't be able to count it as a total loss and use the same figures as a way of justifying all the nickle and diming they do to us now.

Sounds to me like Midway saw The Hangover one too many times. It's funny to see a waste of money like this actually feature a drunken frat-boy. i bet drunks would think they were in some type of space-time paradox. :p

Although, I have to say that I think Rockstar could have overdosed on The Hangover when making GTA IV to liven it up a little. I could only imagine San Andreas and Las Ventura with some updated technology. :D
