Rumor: New Matrix Film Trilogy in the Works

The Wachowski siblings have allegedly started writing the script for a new Matrix trilogy for Warner Bros.

Are you ready to take the Red Pill again and jump back into the Matrix? According to Latino Review [http://latino-review.com/2014/02/exclusive-que-que-que-new-matrix-trilogy-horizon/], the Wachowski siblings have already started the writing process for an all-new Matrix trilogy, with early treatments and outlines already sent to Warner Bros. studio. However, it's not known at this point if the duo will direct any of the films -- assuming this rumor comes to pass, of course.

While the first Matrix trilogy ended with Keanu Reeves' character, Neo, in a questionable state whether he's still alive or dead, it's unclear at this time whether Neo or any of the old characters will take part in this rumored new set of films. One of the early outlines is said to be about the "birth of the Matrix," which would definitely predate Neo since he's not the first "The One," according to the film's "Architect."

For those not familiar -- or weren't old enough -- to have seen the Matrix films, it's a sci-fi action trilogy that heavily borrowed fighting and gun fight choreography from Asian films. The first movie, The Matrix, which was released back in 1999, was widely well-received and introduced iconic characters, Neo (Reeves) and Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) to the world.

Keep in mind this is still a rumor until Warner Bros. confirms or denies it, or we see leaked set pictures and such. If ever, don't be surprised if we're asked to choose whether to take the Red or Blue Pill once again.

Firstly, where did this whole idea of "trilogies" come from anyway? Like, why is 3 the optimal number? Seems like a strange number to limit oneself to, and it seems particularly prevalent in films.

Secondly... oh dear. I was hoping they wouldn't go into "milking mode" with the Matrix franchise. Like, the two sequel films were pretty awful but they didn't feel like "we're just making these for the cash", they just felt like really badly made films. Another trilogy though? I wouldn't be able to shake off the feeling of "this entire thing was made to serve no artistic purpose".

while i'll admit it would be pretty neat to delve back into the human and machine war, the whole concept of it being called 'the matrix' implies the machines have already won by that stage. but then again it is being set in the universe, and not necessarily called 'the matrix', so it could still be done.

either way, i'm still gonna be pretty cautious about this. i enjoyed the trilogy, but in terms of actual quality the second and third installments were nothing compared to the original

Who's this Agent Anderson? I only saw three matrix movies so maybe he was in the fourth one?

Anyways, I'm happy to see more matrix movies. They could be horrible but they could be good. May as well find out.

The Matrix was too confusing to enjoy.

Trilogy comes from the Greek word &#964;&#961;&#943;&#945;, (with a short "i" sound) <a href=http://mylanguages.org/multimedia/greek_audio_numbers.php>pronounced tria, meaning three.

Agent Anderson ?! i think you mean Smith. And i kinda hope this does not happen. It had its time, wrapped it up and its done. Why bother, oh wait....hollywood. money. home of reboot and remakes. Nevermind then ignore me.

Matrix was great, never seen anything like it before, great story and could have ended with that one film.

Matrix Reloaded was not as bad as everything goes on, its the middle child, it did its job, took you further into the matrix world. Same with Matrix Revolution i still have no idea why that gets shit, they were both good movies, no where close to be shit or bad movies. i mean come on next to 95% of movies today. And thou we all know they were milking the Matrix they did it well.

Plus the Animematix was freaking cool.

Holy shit thou, this all ended a DECADE ago. Man do i feel old.

You mean Agent Smith right? The only 'Anderson' in the movies, as far as I remember, is Neo's pleb name Thomas Anderson.

I also have to ask why? Even though we don't know the real fate of Neo the movies wrapped up nicely and we already know the origin of the Matrix from The Animatrix's Second Renaissance movies. Other than cashing in on the franchise I don't think it's really going to add much that hasn't already been done.

What do they mean new trilogy in the works? There's only one Matrix film. One.

Well I guess the money is getting low...
I'm sure they have all it takes for more action movies but "The Matrix" was a one trick pony for them, they had one excellent idea and did it brilliantly but nothing else of theirs came even close.
Maybe they got something on their mind again but I'm not one to place big bets on a dying horse.

Whoops! Yep, I mixed Mr. Anderson with Neo, since I was thinking of the interrogation scene! :D My bad and changed.

Reloaded wasn't bad, but I did not like Revolutions. Just confused and spun the story so much, it lacked weight at the end. Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing a new Matrix trilogy. It's been more than 10 years now and younger people should see what the fuss was all about. Downside is I don't want to see people wearing leather trenchcoats again. UGH!

Yep, fixed. Also, answer to your questions is $$$. Who knows though? Maybe they can show what happened to Neo after the machine took him? I really hope it's not a prequel. For some reason, prequels don't excite me as much since you already know who's going to die/live, etc.

I don't know how I feel about this. On the one hand I feel like the Matrix series is completed and over with. On the other hand they could try and tie up loose ends that the MMO started but was never able to finish.

If the rumor does turn out to be true I would love to see them do the movies like the Animatrix and not live action.

You know...
On a less cynical note.
This could be interesting.

I still think the universe of The Matrix is an interesting one, despite a few flaws.

Hell, if all else fails, they can always make a feature length film of The Second Renaissance.

So it's basically going to be Terminator Salvation, but stretched over three films. Speaking of which, here's what Linda Hamilton had to say about that film:
"[The series] was perfect with two films. It was a complete circle, and it was enough in itself. But there will always be those who will try to milk the cow"

As someone who actually liked Reloaded and Revelations (despite being well aware of their many flaws and stupidities) this is awesome news. It will be interesting to see what changes they make to the overall look and feel of these movies compared to the previous assuming they're actually happening, since the original trilogy was very much a product of the late 90s/early 2000s and I don't think a lot of the visual ideas at least will quite work today as they did back then.

Black leather and flappy overcoats and kung fu and sunglasses and all that, I think they need to not just do that again. lol

Trilogy comes from the Greek word ôñßá, (with a short "i" sound) <a href=http://mylanguages.org/multimedia/greek_audio_numbers.php>pronounced tria, meaning three.
I think what he meant is, why is it a trend to have movie series split into 3 parts rather than any other number.

The best I can think of is the 3 act structure [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-act_structure] to story telling.

Another Matrix film could be interesting, depending on how they do it.

There was absolutely no need for any movies beyond the first one.

At first I was "Oi!" at the "brothers" in the ingress, but then below it said siblings so it was maybe an honest mistake? They aren't brothers, they're siblings, one of them is a sister.

Anyway, I'm unsure what to think of this. I actually didn't mind the sequels THAT much that I'd say that they don't exist but they sure felt different.

This new trilogy may or may not be a good thing, hopefully it'll have artistic integrity and not made just for the monies. Although the odds of that are sadly low.
