Rumor: SOCOM Dev Working on Multiplayer Resident Evil

Gamers could soon be returning to the mean, zombie-filled streets of Resident Evil's Raccoon City, and bringing some buddies along with them too.

Capcom may have hired Slant Six Games, the Canadian developer behind SOCOM: Tactical Strike [http://www.amazon.com/SOCOM-Tactical-Strike-Sony-PSP/dp/B000UHD85C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1288715863&sr=8-1] and Confrontation [http://www.amazon.com/SOCOM-Seals-Confrontation-Stand-Playstation-3/dp/B001C4DKG4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1288715816&sr=8-1], to create a new team-based, multiplayer Resident Evil game. This information reportedly comes via leaked documents that gives the game's working title as Resident Evil: Racoon City.

Aside from the name and the developer, there aren't a lot of details about this alleged game. Taking Slant Six's previous games into account - three SOCOM titles since its creation in 2005 - it's possible it's some kind of military-style shooter, perhaps staring either an actual military presence or one of the Umbrella paramilitary units, like the team Carlos Oliveira belonged to in Resident Evil 3. Of course, this is all just speculation with nothing but fairly thin circumstantial evidence to back it up.

The home page on the Slant Six website [http://slantsixgames.com/index] says that the studio is currently working on a "new publishing partner on a world class franchise," and earlier in the year, it was looking to employ a Japanese translator [http://twitter.com/#!/SlantSixGames/status/10014071682]. Moreover, several Slant Six employees list an "unannounced action game" for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on their LinkedIn profiles. Again, this is hardly conclusive, but it would all fit if the rumors prove to be true.

The idea of a full-on, multiplayer Resident Evil certainly isn't outside the realms of possibility, Capcom has tried it before with Resident Evil: Outbreak on the PS2. It also wouldn't be the first big franchise that Capcom has farmed out to a Western developer recently. There's nothing that sets off alarm bells, or is clearly false, but for now, we're just going to have to wait for more information. We've contacted Slant Six for comment and will update if/when they respond.

This would be a pretty cool game if done right. But when will I ever get my Crackdown style Resident Evil where your character can throw trucks onto a horde of zombies?

I like the idea of it. Last year rumors went around saying a devolper was making a HD port of Outbreak for the PS3 and Xbox360 marketplaces but that never came.

Maybe this is it?

Probably never, since every devolper outside of capcom that made a Resident Evil game stayed true to the roots of the story and combat :p

Isn't Left 4 dead amultiplayer resident evil?

It's at least going to be compared to it...

No, in Left 4 Dead you move as a small team. In this game your gonna form a team in your lobby, then "split-up" and traverse the booby-trapped mansion/zombie infested city on your own.

:p

So the only difference is necesity versus sheer retardation? Okay, just so we're clear!

well the point of going on your on is so that you can solve the various puzzles that occur in these games. Some of them can only be completed from two different locations.

actually, I get the feeling of this game to be kinda like Killing Floor

you see, L4D/2 is about a group of survivors, who just try to get ther asses out of there, while Killing Floor (for example) is more like a cleansening team, you know, a team actually assembled to go kill the zombies, that's what I think this multiplayer RE will be

If the developers of SOCOM: Confrontation really do this, we can expect a horribly overcomplicated game with no help, tutorials, or single player modes for newbies, and a soul-crushingly bad matchmaking system.

P.S. Thanks

In L4D you rush through a map and in a tightly knit group. In Outbreak you were given the option of moving through the map as a group, but there are obvious drawbacks to it. You find less ammo, items, weapons, and you have to fight amongst the other players to get what is available. In the first map you more or less moved together and depended on each other. In the last map you HAD to split up to finish the map in any good amount of time. It literally split off in two directions. Three, technically. You had to go below the university and use the subway lines to gain access to a cleaning facility and fight giant mutated wasps to get their specialized nectar (used in a 'cure' for the virus). Another person/team had to go through the main university to a flooded lab filled with crazy powerful hunter monsters that liked to swallow you hole, to get another component for the cure. And finally, one other individual (or team) had to extract blood from Tyrant... That one was actually the easiest, believe it or not. The only problem was drawing him to you and not the rest of your team. And of course, ALL the while solving puzzles, finding keys to unlock / wasting time and ammo to shoot/break down doors. They set up a LOT of traps that are potentially deadly. As in. One hit kill and you barely see it coming. Other human players also liked to fuck each other over. Friendly fire was deadly. There were moments where you would be jumping from one roof top to another only to have a team mate kill you when the others weren't looking. A LOT of opportunities to be sadistic. It relied heavily on calling out and staying in line of sight, or planning to meet at certain areas once you left each other to do your thing. On SO many occassions you would do your mission, get one of the cure components for example, and then end up waiting at the designated meet up place only to realize that the other survivors didn't make it. Then you had to go find their bodies. Oh. And then sometimes you'd have another player who just spends the entire game hidden in a locker or under a bed, waiting for everyone else to do it for him/her.

What it comes down to it, RE online is a much better game.

OMG SO FUN. I honestly can't wait.

Oh, and let us not forget Resident Evils love of story line, character creation/selection/attributes, and :D :D cutscenes scattered throughout levels.

I RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT THIS SHORT PLAY THROUGH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWub3r0sTF0

I hope this builds on Outbreaks already decent idea for a multi-player Resident Evil. Having say, 10 slots per team and about 20+ different characters to choose from would be pretty aweseome. Having to really work as a team by utilizing different classes and perks for each character. Of course the difficulty could also change per each extra person in the team (ala Borderlands).

The idea I have in my head? Uncharted style gunplay (one side arm, one main weapon and grenade slots) with Resident Evil style puzzles (cogs, levers and logic puzzles, especially ones which will require splitting up). Seriously, tone down weapon power, up the number of zombies and then run it similar to Uncharted (without the climbing) and you have a winner.

I agree with this. Would be a pretty awesome game. I'd definitely buy it.

As long as it isn't set in that DAMNED CITY i'll be fine with this...sorry, but we've had atleast four games in that damned place so i'm pretty sick of Racoon city. Give us another setting or atleast some choice and variety of places to go and i'll have no problems with this installment.
