Rumor: Universal Wants To Reboot The Wolfman (Again)

Today's Hollywood Moral: If at first you don't succeed, try another reboot.

Last year's big budget remake of <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Wolfman-Anthony-Hopkins/dp/B001GCUO0W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307654148&sr=8-1>The Wolfman <a href=http://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-wolfman>didn't exactly wow critics or <a href=http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=wolfman.htm>box office attendees. In spite of this, Universal isn't going to let the franchise die. The studio's reportedly going to just try another reboot that will hopefully do better.

As MovieBob eloquently explained <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/1457-Wolfman>in his review, The Wolfman had a fairly troubled production, and the end result was a film that was mediocre at best and schizophrenic at worst. According to Moviehole, though, Universal doesn't want to make a sequel to the movie because it feels another reboot would have a better chance at success:

The Universal project is currently undergoing a rewrite; it is likely headed before the cameras in the Fall. The studio is said to be talking to prospective directors over the next couple of weeks. Casting will begin shortly thereafter.

Universal owns the rights to all the classic black-and-white monsters of Hollywood, including <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Studios-Classic-Monster-Collection/dp/B00001TZ6Q/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1307660227&sr=8-5>The Wolf Man, <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Dracula-Universal-Studios-Classic-Collection/dp/B000035Z3K/ref=pd_bxgy_d_img_b>Dracula, <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Frankenstein-Universal-Studios-Classic-Collection/dp/B00000JMOF/ref=pd_bxgy_d_img_c>Frankenstein, <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Studios-Classic-Monster-Collection/dp/B00000JQB7/ref=sr_1_11?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1307655052&sr=1-11>The Mummy, and <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Creature-Universal-Studios-Classic-Collection/dp/0783240953/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307657756&sr=8-1>The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Unfortunately, these franchises aren't really going anywhere right now (the last time any of these characters really did well at the movies was in the 1990s, with <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Bram-Stokers-Dracula-Collectors-Oldman/dp/B000TGJ80S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1307654858&sr=8-2>Bram Stoker's Dracula and the first <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Mummy-Widescreen-Collectors-Brendan-Fraser/dp/B00000JQB5/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1307655052&sr=1-1>Mummy).

Reportedly, the new movie's title may involve "werewolf"; additionally, the new reboot might "share a link to the original George Waggner film (from 1941) rather than Joe Johnston's ill-fated 2009 remake."

Of course, this is all hearsay right now and things could change before anything official is announced. Hopefully, if this movie happens, it'll have less interference from producers than Johnston's production did.

Wait, wait, what?

I mean seriously, what!?

I liked the wolfman remake, but didn't love it. Please, just stop. You got a partial win, just stop. Why are they so damn determined? Maybe they really care about the film and want it done right? Maybe...

...Nope. Couldn't keep a straight face. Part of me thinks if it got a single, good director instead of several, it'll be better, but this soon after their last attempt. I ain't convinced this is for the love of the film. Just. Let. It. Die.

Can you really call a new wolfman movie a "reboot" if there's only one previous film, and it wasn't made as a franchise?

Isn't it just a new, independent wolfman film?

Oh for the love of....

Can we get some new ideas Hollywood?!

Please I'm sick of re-make after re-make after re-boot of the re-make.

Enough!

Universal, you guys are barkin up the wrong tree.
Ha! See it's funny because he said barking, and it's the wolfman, geddit? GEDDIT?

Ah, escapist humour how I love thee.

Anyway, as a PS, if they do go through with this madness, they must bring back Rick Baker for the monster effects. The practical effects was one of things I actually enjoyed in that film.

At least I think it was rick baker...otherwise this news has actually made me lose my mind. Congratulations, Hollywood.

Just let it die. It's not a very great story to begin with, and I doubt "re-booting" a singular movie is going to change anything

Wow, the movie industry dooms itself. Just another nail in the coffin. Just keep banging away at it. A reboot of a reboot, this is just a shit idea in general.

That is, if it's true. Pesky rumor mill.

Why remake/reboot it? Why not simply make a FUCKING ORIGINAL FILM THAT ISN'T BASED OFF AN OLDER, BETTER ONE?!

Oh wait....it's an international movie corporation....

I doubt they could do a reboot any better. Forget the classic stuff and try making some good Lovecraft stuff, or even something more original.

I'd actually like to see what they could do with the Creature from the Black Lagoon in this day and age.
Agreed.

And for crying out loud. A reboot? When its been barely two years since the last? They really know no shame...
