Everyone, at some point, has to have a RuneScape account. It's like a nerd rite of passage.
I agree.
Didn't EVERYONE who's a true gamer make an account on that site?
I mean the game's quality sucked so no one really stuck to it.
But just about everyone tried it for that first ten-thirty minutes.
Then most moved on and never touched it again.
Correctamundo. Everyone played it at one point or another, if only for a little bit.

I think most people on the entire internet have at least one account and for people who don't i have 4 accounts that i've used across the year.

I played Runescape regularly for about 2 years, then got a bit bored of it and stopped paying for membership.

I'm tempted to start subscribing agian every so-often, but I might actually give it another shot this time.

The amount of accounts registered does not equal with the amount of accounts active. So you can have over 105 million accounts registered but that in no way means all those accounts are active.

I didn't (but come to think about it, I don't think I'm a true gamer; I'm kinda in the upper-casual area. Somewhere between casual and hardcore).

just for clarity sake, WoW has 14 million ACTIVE SUBSCRIBERS.
Actually, they claimed 11 million before they lost 5 million from the China mess.

And as we all know 11,000,000 - 5,000,000 = 6,000,000.

It was a good time until they decided to discontinue the Wild (aka PvP).
They have replaced it with shitty mini games of unbalanced fighting.
Because now you actually HAVE to wait for a certain amount of people.

Psst, guys. It has 10 million "active accounts." Says right up there :p
I was just about to type that...reading is FTW!

Good for Jagex. While the game is way to grindy for me I have to admit Runescape has better questlines then just about any major MMO out there, including WoW. There quests are some of the few that actually had me *wanting* to read them.
True, the only game that has quests with an actual story is Guild Wars. All quests, ever, are "kill this" or "bring me that", but both RS and GW candy-coat them to make them interesting.
The difference being Guild Wars is, you know... good.

I'm willing to bet that only 100,000 are active AT MOST. The majority of the active users are pre-teens I'm guessing though.
According to the site: There are currently 128,617 people playing!

I'm not listening to your guess-timates again.

Honestly, the amount of Runscape-bashing on this thread is ridiculous - your insulting a game created for kids, one that in its own way was innovative, because you don't like it. I hope you realize how pathetic that makes you all look...

I don't know why everyone hates on Runescape this much. I mean, I don't play it anymore because its boring as hell to farm, but isn't that essentially the essence of most MMORPG's? Sure there are better quests and dungeons in for pay games, but if I'm farming most of the time, I better not also be paying for the "privilege" to farm, and so far Runescape's the best free MMO out there I've seen...

subtracting non active accounts, advertising bots, people making multiple account because of lost passwords or for botting themselves...its not impressive at all.

RuneScape has earned its popularity. It offers something that few other MMOs offer to players: a sense of freedom.

Also, for a game written in Java, it's freaking awesome. Seriously. Java. Did you see the screenshots for the game? The graphics are rather excellent compared to how they used to be, and compared to other Java games.
