Russia to block Twitter from country over its failure to act to remove banned content.

Russia will block Twitter in one month unless the U.S. social media giant complies with a demand to remove banned content, Russian news agencies cited a senior regulatory official as saying on Tuesday.

Moscow said last week it had slowed down the speed of Twitter inside Russia in retaliation for what it described as a failure to remove a specific list of banned content.
Twitter said at the time that it was worried about the impact on free speech of the Russian action, and denied that it allowed its platform to be used to promote illegal behaviour as alleged by Russian authorities.
Twitter could still avoid being blocked if it took action to delete the banned content, which Moscow has said includes child pornography and material on illegal drugs and child suicide.
Yes that's right that's what Twitter is arguing is now a free speech concern not long after banning a lot of people for daring to mention Memphis. Or a number of other things.

Guess twitter should build it's own Russia now?

I mean, this is exactly what you wanted the US to do. What the problem?

Hold twitter accountable for not taking action?

Yes it is, and?
Does it get exhausting to continually come up with strawmen that you can then "win" against? Like at what point does trying to "dunk on" people for opinions they haven't expressed become old to you?

OT: Authoritarian oligarchy doing what authoritarian oligarchies do 🤷‍♀️

Oh God could Australia get in on this action? Just fucking nuke Twitter’s access to the country and tell Facebook to clean up its fucking act or they’re next.
We've got something way worse. If you say something on Twitter or Facebook, Australia can fine you and the social media company if they don't like it.

Yeah, I'm not into your anti-Free Speech stance. Australia is bad enough as it is thanks

While not exactly feasible (given that's where the company itself resides), I do half-wish this would happen in the U.S.

Hey people can still speak freely using social media in Russia they have Russian facebook called VK. There's not requirement for free speech to be to have to be on all platforms. Also Russia is specifically objecting to the 3 subjects that it deems banned content Twitter isn't taking action over so I don't think you want to try and argue said things should be considered free speech (though somewhat arguably drugs might be just about on the line of free speech). Also Twitter itself doesn't support free speech really they just are trying to use it as an excuse as actually tackling major problems on the service would be expensive but banning people using word filter algorithms is so easy and cheap and gets people thinking Twitter has no problems because people can't tell them to Learn to Code in their mentions lol.

It's pretty easy really to do. Wouldn't stop people with a VPN accessing it or getting round it but yeh it's possible for Russia or any country to block something like twitter. I mean Uganda have blocked them and so has Burundi so for Russia it would probably be no issue at all to do.

While i have no problem with blaming Russia for things and talking about how bad their gouvernment is, they are not really the first or even second country doing this to twitter. And so far twitter has usually caved in and removed content deemed illegal by local law. As it should.

Free speech is nice. But halve the world has some kind of limit/censorship and there i no reason whatsoever to not apply it to Twitter as well. Why should stuff be allowed on twitter that can't be printed in a newspaper or shown on a blog ?

Also how long do you think twitter would keep being unbanned in Germany if it didn't remove Swastikas and other stuff illegal by German law there ?

Especially when twitter bans people for stuff that would be ok to print and newspapers or be shown on a blog.

A little part of me wishes it were the other way round and Twitter banned Russia - if it would work blocking their bots and troll farms from the rest of the world.

You understand that what Russia is doing has nothing to do with Free Speech, right?

No, you don't understand. Russia is pro-Trump and supports the alt right whilst Twitter is deemed as progressive. Therefore Twitter is the enemy, and Russia is the friend.
