Has anyone else seen this? It would appear that the Russians are using the "Smash A Nut With A Sledgehammer" strategy in telling the Georgians to back off in South Ossetia. I'm not really sure what to think of the situation right now but it looks like the Russians are blatantly trying to seize the province.

I'm just waiting for the satirists to pick up that Bush will have initially thought "why are they only invading one state?"

Actually, it's pretty embarassing to say that I didn't know which Georgia they were talking about when I first heard of this store. Hey, I'm no geographiphier.

Wait, Georgia's not a country? Oh God...not really.

Truly, I do believe you are correct, Russia is expanding it's territory AGAIN. Eventually Bush will say something about how Russia can't do that because we're the only country allowed to conquer...er, taint...er, profess our beliefs onto other countries.

You know, I can just see Bush feeling the same way, only instead of asking, he just sends the whole army to one of his own states to wipe out all the Russians that aren't there. It's a surprisingly scary thought.

Anyway, I don't know much about this situation between Russia and Georgia either, so I don't know what to say about it. So basically, Russia's been supporting these Georgian separatists, and Georgia decided to set an example by declaring something that isn't quite martial law, but close enough, on one of the more prominent separatist locations. To which the Russians responded by blowing the ever-loving crap out of said separatist location. Did I get that right?

Because if I did, then this is... complicated.

Yeah its a touchy situation.
South Ossetia in the early 90's claimed independence from Georgia, but it was never officially recognized internationally. Most South Ossetians though carry Russian passports and use Russian currency.

Anyway Georgia invaded the region because of claims that the Ossetians started the violence and now Russia invaded to protect South Ossetia, and the international community sees it as Rusia invading georgia while Russia sees it as protecting one of their own regions.

Point is its complicated and no ones hands are clean.

The Georgians were also blatantly trying to seize the area. Earlier today: "Hey, now that we've crushed the capital to rubble and sent at least a quarter of the population fleeing in fear, can we have a ceasefire? No, we won't actually move our troops back out."

Nobody's hands are clean here. Not the Ossetians', not Russia's, not Georgia's, and (lest we forget) not NATO's.

My favorite version of that aphorism is 'driving a nail with a wrecking ball'.

Anyone know if Georgia has nuclear arms? Alot of the former Soviet splinter republics do. If they DO have them this conflict won't get very large. Of course, the fact that its gotten this far seems to indicate that they don't have the bomb.

Ah well. It was part of Russia once and seems set to be so again.

The gloves are off it seems. Somebody pray that Western nations like the UK and US don't get involved, making the situation even worse.

I think its that Russia is trying to end the thing before the end of the olympics. By the way, if they actually finish a war during the time it takes to hold the olympics my respect for the Russians will sky rocket! Only country on the planet to recognize that people care more about who wins the gymnastics event than which countries are bombing each other.

Yea, there is already a thread on it. It's a shame but I hope we don't get involved, our hands are blooy enough as it is.
