S E X Kills UK League of Legends Updates Thanks To Porn Filter

The porn problem doesn't affect everyone.

UK PM David Cameron's porn filter seems to have caught more than intended, as League of Legends updates are being held up on account of the letters S, E and X. So long as they appear in sequence, as in file name VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj, the filter detects it as rampant naughtiness and blocks the download.

This error will only affect a portion of the internet-using population. The filter, first introduced back in 2011 as part of a child safety campaign, only applies to customers taking out new contracts. When the contract's activated, the customer has the choice of a system with parental controls - the filter - or one without. Pre-filter contracts, or contracts that don't activate the filter, have nothing to worry about.

The problem can be solved either by talking to your ISP and getting the filter switched off, or by more roundabout means [http://forums.euw.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1565410&highlight=porn] such as getting the files delivered via USB by someone who isn't affected by the filter.

British parents blocking the access of their children to porn, that's the real scandal, I say. It's inhumane and cruel, dammit!

It still amazes me that anyone thought this filter was a good idea, let alone enough to get it through the House of Commons. Let's see, blocks innocent downloads, supposedly blocks sex education websites and abuse hotlines, is laughably easy to get around with freely available proxies... I think that's enough to mark this down as a certified fail. Not that I would have expected anything different from this government.

I don't think I'll ever understand how crafting an entire world of lies for your children to live in somehow benefits them and how reality is "damaging" to the point at which the government must help keeping your bullshit world of lies stable whatever it takes but oh well.

So... anything that has to do with, say, Sussex, is blocked in the whole UK if you happen to have the parental controls on?
Huh, that might be a good thing.

Ten bob says that when the reptilian Cameron[footnote]with apologies to innocent reptiles whose good name is besmirched by such a colossal prick[/footnote] leaves office, the Daily Fail still trumpets it as one of his greatest accomplishments.

I thought the files were being held up by David Cameron's ridiculously large forehead. Then again that might still be the case.

It's scarier than that, it's the government doing it and not telling you unless you ask.

But they won't tell you exactly what's on the filter blacklist, even if you ask.

The internet censorship is a good thing, you can't expect parents to take responsibility for their children. That's the governments job!

Seriously though, it's a ridiculous waste of time and effort. Anyone determined enough to see some tits can get around the filter with minimal effort whilst people doing nothing wrong are being affected by it.

To be fair, it's not like there'll be many other 'accomplishments' of his to trumpet... eh, gay marriage and being stopped by the Commons from going to war in Syria is all I can think of off the top of my head >.>

Unfortunately, those last two achievements would be lambasted by the Mail as Cameron's biggest betrayals.

OT; So we can add harmless video games to the list of LGBT lifestyle, sex education and rape and domestic abuse counselling sites that this nationwide filter blocks out.

What I find ridiculous is Cameron's instance that this filter will stop kids from "accidentally stumbling across" hardcore pornography. Now, I now it's seen as a useful excuse for MPs to use when they hand their government-appointed laptops in to tech support, but the reality is that it's impossible to "accidentally stumble upon" hardcore porn unless you're actively looking for it.

No, seriously. For anyone who's wondering, David Cameron is literally a lizard.

^This. So much this.

The filter itself is a terrible, stupid idea that couldn't even possibly work without going all "Great Firewall of China" on it, but are you actually telling me that it works as stupidly as this? Any site or file containing the sequence of the letters S, E and X (and likely countless others) just gets filtered? That's... that's just the worst implementation one could possibly think of. Seriously, who the hell thought that would be a good idea, much less got it approved and paid to do it?

Children are not always able to make responsible and informed choices about their lives; the world is a wonderful place, but also dangerous and cruel, and it may take time for some to accept the notion of taking responsibility for their own decision.

As a parent, I completely understand and approve the necessity to temporarily shield children from certain aspect of the world.
As a software developer, I can't but notice this to be a terrible, terrible implementation - as far as I'm concerned, it goes together with gay marriage as one of Cameron's greatest betrayals.

It was championed by the Daily Mail, the Fox News of the print world, and they just wouldn't shut up about it even when people were telling them it just blatantly would not work as intended.

Mind you, these are the guys who scream about freedom of the press and how their being oppressed when they lie and harass constantly, and drove a transgender teacher to suicide because they transitioned and kept being a teacher.

Isn't the UK one of the countries most afraid of Muslims coming in and censoring away their way of life?
I swear conservative movements are all turduckens of stupidity.
