I bought SR2 today and for some reason it crashes when I try to run it.
I already tried reinstalling it.
I,m sure my system can run it I haven't tried def ragging it might work I got it as a retail but it has steam works so it automatically install itself as steam I currently use the one from the steam server (IE removed it and used the steam servers to re-install it)
also re-booting didn't help that much.

First: What do you have it for?
If it's on PC, have you tried Compatibility Mode? There's also a few patches out there that should fix it, had a similar problem.

It's the Saint's Row: The Third patch. Makes all prior volumes inactive for 6 months.

Did you buy it from Steam?
Have you defragged it?
Have you verified the intergrity of game cache?
Can your computer run it?
Did you try restarting your computer, because for me when I first launched the game it was buggy like hell. I could see through the npc, everybody was either completely black or invisible, I could not see colors and much more, but when I restarted my computer it started working perfectly.

Hm... Could I send you a link to a patch I used over a year ago... No, not really. Sorry. Google's your friend on this one.

If you have the choice, I would say to go back and get it for consoles.

It might be too late for that though. I'm not experienced with the PC version, but some of the others could help. I'm sure there's plenty of patches for a 2-year-old game.

honestly just get it for console, it is a bit weird for PC for reasons already mentioned

it's weird because i have completed the game like 4 times in co-op with my friend, and we started it again today and i remembered how fucking hilarious this game is in co-op, i have never had so much fun on a game

Download it completely from steam and try it again. On windows 7, my computer is set to use compatibility mode automatically if needed and it doesn't use it for SR2. Also, I never had any crashes with SR2, it was amazingly well built at least on my system. If it keeps crashing, first turn off steam ingame, then if it still breaks, start in safemode with networking and try. Unless your computer cannot run it I don't think there should be any issue. I will load mine now to see if theres something wrong with a patch or something. Give me a minute.

I loaded it fine off steam. It runs fine for me with all high settings, at 1680x1050. I turn motion blur and vsync off but other then that everything is maxed out.

Also, I have never played it online, the car controls take awhile to get used to, even if you are experienced with wasd car controls, and most menus cannot use the mouse, it gets very annoying.

If it can be downloaded through steam, clear all trace of it, run the uninstall, delete folders, run everything you can to be sure its gone, reboot then install completely through steam. Ive never had any trouble so I really don't think a steam download shouldn't work if your computer is able to run it.

I never really had a problem with it, but then again SR2 was one of the few games I DIDN'T get through steam.

I would recommend deleting the whole thing and starting over with the download/installation or you said you had the retail copy? Just install it and make sure you grab all the patches.

Don't bother, really don't. Chalk it up to experience, Saints Row is the pinnacle of shit PC ports, it isn't worth jumping through hoops to get it working. Play something else, borrow a console and rent SR2 if you really want to play it.

Odd, I bought SR2 via Steam a looong time ago (and have actually put in ~12 hours this past week) and have had no problems whatsoever.

(On 64-bit Vista, for what it's worth)

SR2 doesn't work with 2 monitors so if you have that you need to disable one of them (at least when you launch it). In Windows 7 Win-key+P opens the toggle display menu so you don't have to crawl around the back and pull the cable out.

If your monitor is set at a resolution higher than 1080p it might not work.

If you have SLI or CrossFire enabled you want to disable that as well.

The list of bugs is huge and there were never much support for it. All in all it's one of the worst ports ever made.

Hope this helps though.

Edit: There is also this thread [http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1715922] over on the Steam forums you might want to skim through.

I sort of got it working alt-tabbing results in a crash and rebooting the game requires re-patching.
I played it with a 360 controller with the game assuming that I used a keyboard/mouse setup
I gave up it,s a fun game but the trouble of re-patching it isn't worth it.

I think this is the worst game port EVER! at least Bethesda makes there games playable!
