Saints Row 3 Prof. Genki DLC Weirds Me Out

Step into Genki Bowl VIII, an extension of the creepy game show "Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax".

Most of Saints Row the Third hits the right balance between over-the-top violence and comedy, but something about the Professor Genki thing just feels off. Maybe it's Tim and Eric's disturbing live action take [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3tXNjL1Wis&feature=youtu.be] on the violent game show that makes me shudder. In any case, there's new DLC incoming from Volition in which the leader of the Saints gets thrown into nationally televised annual contest - Genki Bowl VII - for some murder time, fun time. The DLC is due January 17th on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and Steam.

There's been SR3 DLC before, but this marks the first mission pack for the game, extending the already incredible amount of content available in Steelport. You'll get to play a bunch of minigames focused around the Genki Girls: Sexy Kitten Yarngasm, Sad Panda Skyblazing, and Apocolypse Genki, while also blasting away grandmas in the Super Ethical PR Opportunity. The Genki Bowl VIII is free for season pass holders, but there's no word on how much it will cost for those of us unwilling to commit to a whole year of SR3.

Genki Bowl VIII reinforces the idea that Volition and producer Greg Donovan had for the game from the get-go. "From the start, [we decided] everything needs to be over the top, everything needs to kind of encapsulate the vision that the franchise has come to be known by at this point," he said.

Professor Genki might be the one facet of the game that went a little too far, at least for me. I mean, I can watch violent movies with blood and gore spattered all over the place, but if I see video of an open heart operation actually being performed, I get woozy.

That's kind of how I feel when I watch that Tim and Eric monstrosity. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3tXNjL1Wis&feature=youtu.be] I like Adult Swim and the Awesome Show - Great Job! - as much as the next dork, but the joke just falls flat.

Kind of like my video review of SR3 did [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9221-Saints-Row-The-Third-Review] ... *sigh* You win some and you lose some.

I thought the whole game went a little too far on the stupidity and forgot what made the second game such a classic (the great balance between silly and story)

[HEADING=3]ETHICAL![/HEADING]

The more I play SR3, the more it grows on me.

Sure, there's some real problems - Shaundi's re-hashing is awful, the radio is toss, and the character creator doesn't quite work but then....

You get to ride in a car with a live tiger.

I can't really condemn it after that.

Edit: Proof:

Mind the Language.

Did you play Saints Row 3? That's not an incredible amount of content.
Saints Row 2, now that is an incredible amount of content.
I've already finished SR3 and I even lent it to a friend who's also gotten a platinum trophy. It's only been out a couple of months.

I'm actually convinced that this dlc (as well as the shit-ton of other dlc that started showing up on psn at launch, was obviously intended for the original release until THQ got greedy and said "take out half of it to be sold separately as dlc."

Just an FYI, each DLC will cost $8 when released. The reason I know that is because, as stated in their official forums here [http://saintsrow.com/community/go/thread/view/136781/28687255/], you save 15% buying the season pass. Considering the season pass is only $20, it's not hard to figure roughly 15% of 24 (8+8+8) is about the only number that makes sense. Not to mention a lot of DLC on XBL and PSN seems to be $8 (or 560 Microsoft Points). So I'd say it's pretty safe to say that'll be the price.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to this. I enjoyed SR3 but haven't played it since about a week after release. So I won't be burned out on it when this comes around.

While I loved SR3, the constant bevy of post-release items for sale annoys the living crap out of me. One would think buying that asinine season pass would mean I would have access to the small 1.99 affectations. I don't care to just buy costumes without content. Genki Bowl VIII is something I'm looking forward to, as it actually has content.

The video, though, reminds me why I hate Tim and Eric. The early-Doctor wannabe clothes, the terrible presentation, the way no one's just saying "The fuck with this nonsense"...Genki in SR3 was fun, because like everything else, it was ludicrous and over the top. Taking the OTT quality and turning it into something normal is what's inherently wrong with the idea. That godsawful waste of 12 minutes of life is everything I would never want Saint's Row to be. You just don't take the damn thing near seriously. Tim and Eric positively butcher things, with no sense of appropriate timing, punchline, or demeanor. Too much emphasis on flash, bizarre, and nonsensical fuckwittery makes nothing good.

I'll play with Genki. I want nothing to do with those two asshats.

That was mine and a friend's major complaint - way too short. We whipped through all of the missions in two sittings of co-op. The game was a ton of fun, definitely left us wanting more and frustrated that it should have easily included more.

^Pretty much this. The awesome part about Saints Row 2 was that, regardless of how ridiculous some things were, the story was really awesome. SR3 feels like a parody of SR2 and it just simply doesn't work.

I'll be honest... there's Saints Row crazy and there's Japan crazy. Both are equally fun bits of crazy, but when you try to mix the two crazies, you'll either have something fantastic or something... very disturbing.

I'm a fan of both (and, since I haven't had Saints Row 2, I have no reference to how much Third failed), but I'm very dubious about this map pack. This feels like it has soooo much potential to be a funny and interesting project, but at the same time, this sounds like it has a big chance to crash and burn.... hard.

I hope these guys know what they're doing.

After just watching whatever that Tim & Eric thing was, I have to ask whether anyone got the "Monkey" reference?

Exactly how I felt about SR3. While I enjoyed it I feel that it was ultimately disappointing. Apparently we're either in the minority or Volition has successfully split their fanbase that they gained with SR2.

Well, er, actually it's $6.99
That's what the official article on this said it would cost.

So needless to say you aren't saving much of anything from the Season Pass.

Absolutely love the game. I'm looking forward to new content, 'cause it should always be "murder time, fun time!"

I don't know why anyone who bought the game didn't do it through the THQ store. I ended up getting 5 dollars off, free shipping, the pre-order pack, and the season pass for free.

I know this wasn't outrageously publicized, and the discount wasn't extended to everyone, but it seems like the people who bought it retail really got shafted.

The season pass is what's curbing my desire to trade in SR3 for a game on my backlog. Hopefully this content is enough to keep me interested for a few hours.

I really wish people would stop saying this.
You can pretty much finish all the activities and missions in the game PLUS buy your favourite upgrades in about 25 hours of playtime. 20 hours if it's your second run. That is vastly less than what it took in SR2.
Sure, there's open world mayhem, but even that is limited in scope and entertainment, compared to the previous game.

... Back to the topic at hand.
The Genki activities are my favourites so far, I have a good feeling about this DLC.
If I hadn't bought the season pass, I don't think I'd bother with it, though. Vanilla game's a bit cheap on content, not really fond of the DLC-content cash-in.
