Saints Row III before Saints Row IV?

I've got a simple question with a complicated explanation; should I try to play any of Saints Row III before I play Saints Row IV? I get the impression the main character is an invention by the player, so there's probably no perceivable character or story development from one game to another. However, there does seem to be development for the Third Street Saints as a gang. Maybe I'm overthinking this series, but I felt the need to ask. SRIV is looking to have the exact wacky action I enjoy.

I think that the character's personal story won't be all that relevant at this point, since it's going to be that over-the-top.

I recommend playing it regardless. If you love wacky action, you'll love this game.

Well there is some story but it's so thin they might as well not have it, I'd say get SR3 if you like the look of SR4 because they will be near identical.

Yes, seeing as SR4 was originally an SR3 DLC: "Enter the Dominatrix"

If you like wacky action then you should play Saints Row: The Third anyway. If there was one positive about it I could say it would be that it's just pure, insane fun.

You don't need to play it anyway, as Saints Row: The Third has proven the developers don't care about previous installments to the series (Benjamin MOTHERFUCKING King springs to mind) and as such Saints Row IV won't be hard to follow.

If that's the case then I suggest you play SR3. Whether you play it before or after SRIV, I suspect that you're going to want to play it because it's cheap to buy now and there's plenty of stuff to do. And I keep saying this on the forums, but Saints Row 3 has this near-perfect two player integration for the campaign. Don't play it with random trolls that purchased everything (including invincibility) with cheats, play it with a friend.

If you care about the story then I recommend the second game which is also the best one in the series. The second game actually has a really great story line that has a perfect balance in humor and serious story moments. The third game while wacky sorta throws all story and a lot of the customization and a bunch of other things out of the window. So if you don't care about story ya you can start with the fourth if you do care then go for the second.

I don't see how the stories even matter.

But the games and the action matter and guess what no 3 is AWESOME!

So you should play it only already for the reason that it is Awesome

I think you should play it. You don't need to for 4, but you should for enjoyments sake. Plus during the summer sale you will be able to get it and all the dlc for $10 or your regional equivalent.

Don't play Saints Row: The Third if you just want to know the story in between the second and fourth game, since there isn't much plot that happens besides the first 20-30 minutes of the game.

Get Saint Row: The Third if you feel like you'd have fun with it, other wise just save your money for the fourth game.

It's pretty fun your first time through, especially with a friend to co-op it with. The meat of the game after the story campaign is solely based on upgrading your gear (boring) and doing some tedious minigames that are either drive here, shoot someone, or drive here and shoot someone. And there's general sandbox tomfoolery, but that isn't unique to SR3.

There are some hilarious and some "I can't believe I'm doing this!" moments in the campaign, but the campaign is an absolute bore when you spend almost two to three hours learning the minigames.

Well, here's the story so far.

The only people who translated from Saints Row 2 are The Boss (you), Shaundi, Pierce, and Johnny. From that time, the Third Street Saints have become humongous celebrities and have their own clothing and food chains. The game begins with you doing a bank heist in Stilwater (SR 1 & 2's setting) that goes awry because the bank is heavily protected by a group called The Syndicate -- which is a syndicate of the main gangs in Steelport (SR3's setting). The Syndicate, lead by a kingpin of The Morning Stars gang named Phillipe Loren, takes you out of prison and offers to have the Third Street Saints join The Syndicate for their lives, if they give up most of their wealth. The Boss obviously says no, Johnny dies in their escape (in the first ten minutes of the game!). Shaundi, The Boss, and Pierce crash land in Steelport with a vendetta to destroy The Morning Star, get a strong foothold in Steelport, and kill Phillipe.

A little bit later, you kill Philip of The Morning Stars, but the Syndicate is immediately taken control by Killbane, a former wrestler and current kingpin of a wrestling-themed gang The Luchadores. On the mission to kill Phillipe, you meet a brute named Olaf, a Russian heavy and certified genius, who joins the Saints as a means to take revenge on Phillipe. Afterward, at a memorial to Johnny's death, The Luchadores crash the party and the Saints (joined by Olaf) take objective to destroy them.

They first rescue Kinzie Kensington, an ex-FBI hacker, who was taken by another gang of The Syndicate, a goth techno gang called The Deckers. Then they rescue Zimos, a pimp who only speaks in autotune, who had been used as a sexual human pony in a nearby brothel owned by the DeWynter sisters (DeWynter sisters are a part of The Syndicate, but have no gangs). (look up the mission, shit is hilarious). Then they help an ex-wrestler Angel, who was shamefully defeated by Killbane and wants revenge. Viola DeWynter, who runs the prostitution in Steelport and is partly responsible for Zimos's time as a human pony, defects from The Syndicate and joins The Saints after Killbane murders her sister, Kiki.

The same time, a military group named STAG is deployed to Steelport because of the rising gang violence, lead by a grizzled veteran named Cyrus Temple.

Using Kinzie's hacking skills, The Boss eventually breaks apart The Deckers (lead by Matt Miller). Killbane is defeated later, in an event called Murderbrawl XXI, where Angel and The Boss tagteam him and defeat him in the ring of honor. (Look that mission up too, super fucking fun.) However, Killbane refuses to lose control of The Luchadores, and STAG is still prevalent in the city.

The game ends with two choices hitting The Boss, as the remains of the Luchadores and STAG go on an all out war on Steelport: First would be to murder Killbane (and later Cyrus on a giant fucking fortress) in a long act of destructive revenge, and declare Steelport independent of America. Second would be to murder STAG's second in command, Kia, and save Shaundi, Viola, and Mayor Burt Reynolds (you fucking read that right, Burt Reynolds), where you would then order STAG to leave Steelport because STAG nearly blew up a national monument to kill Shaundi, Burt Reynolds, and Viola.

In Saints Row 4, the 'save Shaundi, Viola, and Reynolds' option is canon.
