The game is good but, unfortunately, technopants seems like kinda a dick. After talking to him through email, over the steam forums, etc, it seems like he's completely unwilling to add things which his fans really want, usually for reasons that are completely baffling.
And I'm not talking about people screaming " ADD ONLINE MULTIPLAYER!" as though that were easy to do. No, I'm talking about 30 second changes such as
"Let players pick the number of lives/kills they want in a round"
"Let us Select the Showdown levels as levels for the normal fights"
"How about an optional 'no guns' mode?"
These requests, which are echoed dozens of times over the forums, are met either with silence or with a response that boils down to "I don't think you should be given that option because it doesn't fit with how I want to play the game"
We just saw an update on steam with basically jack shit added, save for minor bugfixing, so I'm not hopeful for anything new being added. Honestly, this is the type of game that any halfway decent developer could make in a few days, yet this (and Nidhogg) meandered at indie shows for months or years before release despite being pretty much nothing more then glorified flash games.
Good for him.
Really, you think there's an onus on a developer to cater to every whim of the fanboys?
Your last paragraph says it all. You think you can tell someone else what to do. Sorry, the world don't work that way.
So...let me get this straight.
The customer, the person who buys the product you have made, and that you have promised to update, isn't allowed to ask for things in return for his money? Or make criticisms about it? Are you a marketer for EA?
How in gods name is it so horrible to ask for things that should be freaking standard on any fighting game? If a game came out on consoles that had 3 characters 1 map and no ability to tweak the rules, would you be defending the maker's right to do that? Or would you be asking for them to patch in these small, easy, options that would take them 10 minutes to do?
So you can sit here and applaud his ability to ignore his fans and players (which is odd, because when EA does it, everyone gets mad at them) but let me hit you with some facts.
1. The game is a niche game. It requires a computer, with at least 1 gamepad, and a friend to play couch coop with because it has no online modes. That right there just cut out a massive section of the market.
2. It's very pricy for what it is. The majority of people I've seen have the lack of online or the price as their major reasons for not buying. So now your market is even smaller.
3.According to steam's data, there were 30 people playing this game after launch. 30. World wide. The humble bundle's a bit better but not by much, mostly because it meant the game got torrented almost instantly.
So yeah, his fans can't force him to do anything. Good for him! Alienating the few fans and buyers he has while his game is a commercial failure! Yeah, don't listen to what people want! Players want minor things that really should have been standard? FUCK EM!
Honestly...it's like you're just adopting a contrary opinion because you've been brainwashed by people screaming "Entitled".
