The saddening results found that "males in the study were less likely to have had sex as a group compared to the group of females in the sample."
It's cause even if a girl is a nerd, she still has a chest. :p
I'm happy to see that sometimes, there's more honesty on the internets than in RL.

I'm a male arts student and I can vouch that the vast majority of the females in my university program are idiotic slutbags. I'm also a virgin, but I'm probably nerdier and more anti-social than those science students, so there's my explanation.

Oh trust me, I know. Like the fact that I'm a science nerd, and I'm talking to my girlfriend while I read this.
Yes, because anecdotal evidence is incredibly reliable for making broad generalisations about a population sample.

What's the point of using funding and rigourous scientific experimentation for shit that everyone already knows?
Because a lot of the time, "shit that everyone already knows" actually winds up to be incorrect. You'd be surprised how many folk stories, urban legends, and other "common knowledge" things are actually untrue or highly exaggerated. The point of this study is to cast light upon that "common knowledge" and determine whether or not it is actually credible. This is one of the few cases where reality actually does match up with the myth.

Actually, nerdy females are probably more desirable for the majority of males, as it's more likely that their higher intelligence and more typically "male" interests will be more appealing. The reasons why attractive, intelligent females with good interests are so hard to find are simply that a) there aren't that many of them and b) the ones that do exist are instantly claimed by others.

I call shenanigans on you! Statistically speaking you are probably lying apparently.
What statistics are you talking about? I was.
The statistics, aren't you paying attention?
Okay, let's look at the statistics. There's a 50-50 chance I have a girlfriend. I do, so that doesn't matter. There's a 100% chance that I am reading the thread. There's a 50-50 chance that I am talking to my girlfriend, which I am, so that's another one that is done with. Finally, there is a 25-75 chance that I am talking to her at the same time, which, seeing as how I have posted here 4 times, means that by Law of Probability I have been reading this thread and talking to her at the same time at least once. There are your statistics. And I believe I have also proven that I am a nerd.

And here are my statistics. There is a 99% chance (plus or minus epsilon) that I am messing with you. There is a 10% chance that you have figured this out by now. And finally there is a (derivative of e^x)% chance that statistics is nothing but BS anyway.

I call shenanigans on those statistics!
a) according to the scientific study, the chance of you having a girlfriend is significantly lower than 1/2.
b) while unlikely, there is a possibility that you are not reading the thread while typing. You may just be one of those monkeys we always hear about that randomly types out the works of William Shakespeare.
c) you talk to your girlfriend for 50% of the time?! That seems like an awful lot. Unless you talk to each other in your sleep, but then how would you know?
d) where the 25 - 75% probability comes from I don't know. I think you just made it up.
e) I may now be an even greater nerd for replying to this.

I'm not a science nerd and I never talk to my girlfriend because I don't have one.
Be careful while quoting ;)

That's what I was going to ask.

This is almost as bad as the headline "Studies by government scientists has shown that water freezes in cold temperatures." My response was "...Our fucking tax dollars at work."

Yes sir, you are more of a nerd. I created the statistics from the fact that I can either have a girlfriend or not, and nothing in between, so logically speaking (rather than mathematically) it's a 50-50. That's how I figured out the talking to my girlfriend tone as well. I could either be talking to her, or not talking to her. The 25-75 comes from the requirement of a correlation. There are 4 possibilities: 1) I could be neither reading the thread or talking to her. 2) I could be talking to her but not reading the thread. 3) I could be reading the thread but not talking to her. Or 4) I could be doing both. 25-75. Of course, this is all rendered moot by the fact that I am in fact talking to her and reading the thread.

If you seriously think that people look at you the same way whether or not you're a virgin, then you're living in dreamworld. What they say is irrelevant; you think they're going to call you a pathetic loser unless they want to insult you?

We're not saying they don't, we're saying why is that bad? Honestly why should anyone care? We know that people do, but I don't know why they care.

I'd say its a hell of a lot safer to be a virgin...
As i read in a post earlier, the rate of which STI's and STD's are getting around is alarmingly fast.
I salute the nerds who don't try to get laid and enjoy reading a book.
I, on the other hand, am still trying to complete Halo on Legendary on my own. (Halo 1, not 2 or 3)

Failure to pass on decent genes?

Enough people on this board complain there is too many dumb people filling up the world, only way to combat that is to breed more intelligent people. :p

I just want to point out, that geeks are not involved in this topic. There is a massive difference between geeks and nerds. The most important factor : A geek gets it done, a nerd doesn't.

I myself am a geek, and i have had no problem getting some hands-on training on human anatomy.

It's not bad in itself. It's the fact that people will view you as a pathetic loser that makes it bad. It's a right of passage, a way of saying "I am a perfectly healthy, experienced, attractive adult and will ensure that any sexual activities we may engage in will be free from awkwardness". If you're a virgin, chances are that nobody except other virgins are going to want to sleep with you past a certain age. It's a shallow, asshole-ish thing to do, but then, most people are shallow assholes.

Fortunately I don't hang out with people like that and I honestly don't care about other people all that much. So it doesn't bother me a bit.

Well, obviously it only becomes an issue when nearly everybody you're surrounded by is like that. I don't hang out with such people either, but that also doesn't mean that I engage in coitus with my friends, who I wouldn't say are brilliant matches for me anyways. Like I said, the better people always get taken, and nearly immediately. It certainly doesn't help when you're an anti-social isolate unable to so much as initiate conversation with other people.
