Scorpion Brings the Pointy Violence in New Mortal Kombat Trailer

There's no plot or story to get in the way here, just punching, kicking, and unholy fire from beyond the grave.

Mortal Kombat's [http://www.amazon.com/Mortal-Kombat-Playstation-3/dp/B003O6E1JS/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1288647162&sr=1-1] undead ninja, Scorpion, can never seem to catch a break. All he wants to do is get revenge on his hated rival Sub-Zero, but there always seems to be someone in his way. Fortunately - for him that its, not so much for his foes - Scorpion is packing a pretty big sack of hurt, and he's not afraid to share.

Leaving behind the exposition of his earlier plot reveal trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104497-Mortal-Kombat-Trailer-Finally-Explains-Why-Scorpion-Hates-Sub-Zero], this time round Scorpion is just beating the stuffing out of anyone and everyone that gets in his way, whether they're movie stars, scantily clad demonic princesses or some kind of bipedal man-lizard. Interestingly, there's also a snippet of tag team gameplay, which shows Scorpion teamed up with non-other than Sub-Zero, whose ninja hiding skills are clearly beyond compare.

It looks like the experts that NetherRealm brought in to tweak the combat [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104752-Mortal-Kombat-Dev-Brought-in-Experts-to-Tweak-the-Game] did pretty decent job. It's striking is how fluid the gameplay looks, with Scorpion chaining together flurries of kicks and punches, sometimes with an actual chain. There's no Marvel vs. Capcom 2-style 100+ hit combos [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94296-MvC2-Combo-Compilation-Will-Make-You-Feel-Inadequate], I wouldn't be entirely surprised if skilled players rack up some very impressive numbers, especially with the assist mechanic in play.

Mortal Kombat is due out next year for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Well hiring fighting game experts and all that junk looks like it might pay off. I have never liked the MK series at all given how uh...bad the gameplay was (I know I'm gonna get heat for that), but this one is actually shaping up to look like a rather competent fighter that I may actually enjoy. Every series has that one good game, and this could be it for me.

I just want to know more about the intricacies of the game and hope that they didn't just throw in a super meter and call it a day when it comes to innovations. Will there be rapid cancel type attacks? Charge modifiers? focus type attacks? ect...

Well color me interested, this might turn out to be a great game yet. But I shall still remain rather pessimistic until I've seen more or played it, given the series track record things can still go south.

I'm a Street Fighter fan myself, and was never into the MK series, and yet whilst SFIV was very disappointing, I'm quite excited at this one. The game looks smooth and the locations finally look as dazzling and haunting as the hand drawn backgrounds from the classic era.

Well I played a little of everything, and MK never seemed any different from the other fighting games, what was so bad about it?

I took a liking MK to because of the weird movies, it was all sort of sci-fi, and they had ninjas with ice and scorpion attacks, and a dude with lightning, and... I was a kid.
Then on the other side you got the street fighter movies where they just have a ton of ordinary dudes fighting alot, doesn't quite stack up in oddness.

... Aw. No fatality?

Oh well. If anything it should be worth a weekend rental once it's out - looks like tons of fun for a night with my mates.

He broke Kung Lao's face. That was just plain awesome. I'm glad to see MK seems to be on track.

I still want to see him do his 'toasty' fatality.

I agree. The gameplay of the series has been fairly limited. In the old games it comes down to mashing super attacks and using cheap shots and judging by the completely dreadful vs DC game the gameplay hasn't evolved too much. Actually I might go as far as saying it has de-volved (no, not because there weren't any cool fatalities).

Mortal Kombat:Deadly Alliance was a blast when it originally came out for the PS2. It was the first MK game I really enjoyed in terms of gameplay. It had lot's of depth with 3 fighting styles, usable but not too exploitable super moves, the stab in the gut/ lose health over time risk reward mechanic and finally the awesome cross fighting styles combo moves. The game had it all. Unlockables, replayability, depth in fighting (defensive/normal/offensive stances worked like a charm) and you could get really REALLY good at it (which is most important for fighting games). What did they do? They removed all these promising additions and gradually turned this game into a spam fest of super moves again. I don't get it. What happened MK?

I agree that simplicity is key, but it's good to have some variety in your fighting games.

Are they seriously just calling it Mortal Kombat? WTF? There already is a game with that name if anyone hadn't noticed.

Hmm...admittedly I haven't played many of the newer MKs, I forget which ones, but I do remember that game. I never played it but the concepts it had seemed interesting and could work adding some REAL depth to the game. It sounds a whole lot better than what we know of this current one.

Most of my hate comes from the older games though with it's awful and stilted combat mechanics that lacked any real flow or finesse. There was very little depth and like you said, it just degenerated into button mashing and cheap shots given its less than ideal balancing.

There could still be some hope for this game, it might not degenerate into the crap that its predecessors had. But I really wont be that disappointed if it turns out to be another bust given the series track record. Hell I might track down Deadly Alliance and give it a whirl to see how those mechanics play out, sounds more interesting than the boringness of the rest of the series.

I gotta wander if they will add a character creator to this one like they did with that other Mortal Kombat game?..Don't get me wrong, i love the cast of this game (I'm a sub Zero fan myself) but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine to create my own characters..stop looking at me like that!

I'm glad they're making another MK, this is one of the few series of games that has remained strong, even with a few hiccups.
