Scott Derrickson Will Direct Marvel's Doctor Strange

The Sinister director will helm the debut outing for Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme

Marvel is still having difficulty filling the director's shoes for next year's Ant-Man, but the rest of their "Phase III" plans are proceeding full steam ahead with today's announcement that Scott Derrickson, late of the horror hit Sinister, will direct the long-gestating Doctor Strange movie.

Mainly known as a horror specialist (he also directed Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the upcoming Deliver Us From Evil), Derrickson also helmed the Keanu Reeves-starring remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, which was roundly panned by critics but became a big hit at the international box-office. He is also a writer, and some speculate that he may be asked to revise the film's current screenplay. Marvel is believed to be very close to choosing an actor for the role, expected to be announced during or before Comic-Con.

Created in 1963 by the Amazing Spider-Man team of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange would be best described to non-comic fan audiences as "Iron Man, but with magic." Stephen Strange (yes, it's actually just his last name) is a world-renowned surgeon whose incredibly skilled hands make him rich and famous but also arrogant. He loses everything when a tragic accident robs him off this gift, and he seeks out a magical cure from a Himalayan mystic named The Ancient One. When he foils an attempt on The Ancient One's life, he offers to train Strange in the use of the mystic arts. Reborn as Earth's "Sorcerer Supreme," Doctor Strange uses magic to battle supernatural threats and to aid other heroes in the Marvel Universe.

Am not a comics fan, but i cant wait for this movie. Its different to the usual superhero movie we get. Its a risk. But with this, GotG and Antman, we are getting some really interesting movies from Marvel.

I have only seen the animated movie but it is pretty good. He basically came off as if Nolan's Batman learned magic from the league of shadows instead of being a ninja. It was pretty good and I am looking forward to a guy who is not just there to fight things.

I don't know if a motion picture of any kind can do justice to the full Ditko vision of Strange. How the hell do you film something as bizarre as Eternity and not have it look goofy?

I love Dr. Strange so much. He's definitely in my Top 5 Marvel characters and the fact they're making a film of him alongside the likes of The Avengers sequels and sci-fi space operas/comedies is something of a treat. I don't think they can screw it up too much.

(psst, there's only one O in "sorcerer")

I had hoped to be excited about this news, but honestly, I don't care very much. I've seen several of Mr. Derrickson's movies and wasn't exactly blown away by any of them. They were like a meal at TGIFriday's: fine, and more or less worth the price, but nothing my memory lingers over.

Maybe the dude has a love for Dr. Strange that will shine through like Jon Favreau's love of Tony Stark. I dunno. We'll see. A bit worrisome that he seems to like stories about people who are helpless in the face of supernatural threats, though. That doesn't really work for the dude whose whole job is dealing with those threats.

Considering all the movies this guy has done are either bad or sub-par this is unfortunate news unless he somehow doesn't screw it up.

Between this guy's credits, the two screenwriters' credits, and rumors of casting Johnny Depp in the titular role, I think this will be Marvel's big flop.

What's next in the Marvel draining of their entire comic history bank... Gorilla Man? Cannonball? or just a Howard the Duck reboot, just for kicks.

Everything I've heard and read about Thanos I can certainly see how magic will be useful in that battle.
Seems like might be an interesting movie on it's own too, more Thor-like I guess. (magic and stuff) his origin seems more like Batman from Begins though.

Let the casting rumours kick into 12th gear!!

Let's start the (outlandish) ball rolling: Jim Caviezel.

I think that's the genius of having a horror movie director, they tend to 'get' bizzare and otherworldly and strange beings (See, Lovecraft et all). However, we can only hope that they don't decide to make Eternity a giant cloud like Fox did to Galactus or Warner Bros did to Parallax...

I'm looking forward to this. I have always loved Doctor Strange as a character. It also opens the doors for some great characters... if they could take the properties back. I would love to see a full blown Midnight Sons movie... though that would require them having both the Blade and Ghost Rider to return to Marvel. Either way, it's time we saw the magical side of the Marvel Universe already.

Marvel does have the rights back to Blade and Ghost Rider

Hmmm, now that I think about it, it has been long enough for Blade.. but Ghost Rider is Columbia Pictures which is apart of Sony.

Well that's awesome. I guess Sony decided that they can't make a shitty movie and still make lots of money off of it, so they just gave it back in lieu of trying to make a good movie.

I am ambivalent about this movie.

On one hand, the character deserves his own movie; on the other hand, making a screenplay for such a character and not making him look cheap is extremely challenging. Most movies with magical protagonists end up having problems with defining the limit of their powers (see "Sorcerer's Apprentice"), so they lack conflict because they can do "whatever". This movie could well be "a wizard did it, the movie"...
