Sonic fans could or could not be hard to please, maybe if they didn't put out crap like black knight, then we would be OK, the last great sonic game in my mind was SA2 (SA2B if you had a Gamecube) I love it, great levels, they varied the game-play us so you wouldn't get bored, the only level I didn't like was the ones with that bat. ><
(Sorry, Brad. Couldn't help it.)

I honestly don't understand the hate that game received. Sonic 06', yes, that game was terrible. We ALL know that. Black Knight? It's average, not terrible.

While I'm on this subject, the same goes for Shadow the Hedgehog, which I have played from beginning to end enough times to see the true ending. That game was not terrible either, and again I don't understand why people hate it. I know the game was darker than Sonic based ones, and that was part of the point.

I give Sega 10 bonus points for referencing Daft Punk, but as long as Sonic 4 meets "Face to Face" with my enjoyment of the past Sonic games, I will have no complaints. Also, I'm surprised Sega hasn't tried to make a game based on the storyline of the Sonic SatAM cartoon back in the day.
If they did, the world would have to be as huge as Just Cause 2. In fact, if SEGA could make an open world Sonic game where you can run around for hours on end, like in Spiderman: Web of Shadows, Crackdown 2, or Just Cause 2, then I would seriously consider playing such a game for weeks.

Overall, I agree that Sonic fans are passionate, but speaking as a fan who has played about 90% of all the games in my 24 years of life, I'd have to say the most vocal fans ARE too nit-picky, and that some critics out there are only exacerbating the problem.

Here's one suggestion: Take it in stride. Unless the progression is severely broken by bad design choices, I.E. having to collect the medals to unlock new levels in Sonic Unleashed, then try and enjoy it a bit. (I loved Sonic Unleashed, by the way.)

And another: SEGA is not Nintendo. Don't expect them to copy-paste the same idea for each game with slight changes in each. They try to make the formula unique, such as the branching story-lines in Shadow's game, and the dueling levels in Sonic Rivals 1 and 2. And, let's not forget that they got Bioware on their side for Sonic Chronicles, to which I am still grining about today.

I don't see Sonic as being tortured by SEGA or Sonic Team, mostly because I'm the kind of player who likes to explore instead of speed run through everything I own. That aside, I'm looking forwards to Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors.

Sonic fans are not hard to please. The fact that the 3D Sonic games have sold any copies at all prove that.

he's probably right; fans want a game exactly like the 16-bit one..and they made it. perfect copy of a game 10 years old. congrats to the sonic team for their hard work!
10 years to realize people hate change and just re-do what was good in the 1st place.

An open world Sonic game where Princess Sally sends you on a mission to free some of the other Freedom Fighters from the clutches of the Orwellian dictator of this world in Dr. Robotnik? Sign me up. You can even slow Sonic down a bit, as long as the story was good, I'd be happy. No level grinding, no werehog shit. Just have Sonic run around and spin dash into people. Hell, throw in some Multiplayer when you could control Tails, Antoine, Princess Sally, Bunny Rabbot, Rotor, and the other Freedom Fighters and have special missions.

Hate to say it, but Mr. Corless is right: Sonic fans are not that hard to please. So why do they insist on not doing that?

I literally just pulled this out of my ass when he mentioned a vast world like Just Cause 2. I mean, the shit's there to make a damn good game out of it, I'm surprised Sega hasn't jumped on it. Could be just the shot in the arm Sonic needs to shake off the stink he's garnered slowly but surely since the jump to 3D.

It's not hard to please Sonic fans, just LISTEN TO THEM.

Hey, can we get an article from the Escapists own Snotnarok how Sega has time and time again ignored their fans and just kept pumping out crappy games with more bugs than we know what to do with? Then quickly insisting that they're not at fault for it. Crushing the amazing game Sonic Unleashed could have been, it was really good besides those crappy werehog levels and the dumb map levels.

"His legs are too long" and "Eyes are the wrong color"

...

Using bitchy-nit-pickiness to improve a game shows that the developers are skilled enough to get something useful out of the complaints. It makes the fanbase useful, not passionate.

My only complaints about the main Sonic games were all the excess crap they throw at you and the fact he now moves WAY TOO FUCKING FAST! If you have to memorize the level via trial and error to get through it, then something is worng.
Sonic 1-K weren't stupidly fast, but felt fast. They didn't feel fast because Sonic ran faster than a Bugatti Veyron, they felt fast because of good level design.
