Always with the cases where people accuse games in some way. Why don't they mention all the positive effects games have? Come on... drugs? Seriously? In that regard food is more addicting, why don't we just regulate food intake and live in a totally controlled society? Maybe then we can call upon the governments to regulate our oxygen intake.

Why? Why must thing kind of thing keep happening? How is it that people keep missing the warning signs that disturbed people show before they act out?

I do not agree with this behaviour. And it seems MMos are always the main "video game addiction" culprits.

But it's all in asian countries! There is some reason for this. Maybe the subscription fee?

"It's exactly like drugs or alcohol - once people get addicted, they feel they have to have it. There are always certain people who will get addicted to a drug, and in gaming we estimate it's about 20% to 30% of people," claimed Woolley.

I would very much like to know where he got this information. Maybe then I'll believe him. Also please keep this away from Fox and the Daily Mail. I can only imagine...
Seriously.

Consider the amount of people beaten or killed over drugs or alcohol, and the amount beaten or killed over videogames. Not even close, even though videogames are so popular.

It's bullshit
Absolutely true but you wouldn't ever see a news source quote you, me or anyone else on this site for important matters. Just the most important people who agree with them. Sadly this includes more sources than fox news.

I don't know what to say. I really can't unless I somehow knew how many psychotic Buffalo Bills are out there, ready to kill someone for a few hours of internet time. Even then, there's the question of how many are too many.

This kid must be freakin' insane, because nobody with even the slightest amout of brain power is going to murder someone over amounts of money that would probably be considered petty theft when stolen.

This kid is a sociopath. The games are just enabling him.

Having put well over 200 hours into modern warefare II, I easily say that games aren't *that* addicting, eventually the repetitive grind wears thin and you get bored PROVIDED you play by yourself and not in a guild, and if you stay on as a result of the guild, it's a social addiction, enjoying the game with outer people, you could just as easily switch to playing rugby if the same guildmates came over for a pint. >_>
Thanks for that too, how come is it still that connecting with people via a guild and enjoying a game is still seen as 'sad' 'geeky' and the act of a cheeto stained basement dweller, yet tapping away at Facebook all night on your phone going 'I just had a twinkie lols' is somehow socially acceptable?

I mean I do sort of understand it, but a guy who spends 4 nights a week in WOW is a weirdo, but the guy paying to pour poisonous liquids down his neck 4 or 5 nights a week in a bar in the hope of either getting into a fight or some casual sex is a top guy... It's a strange one.

Currently in the US between 52 - 63% of the population plays video games. In other countries it can range from 10% up. The problem is not the games. The fact is so many people play video games these days some are going to be people who are screwed up mentally. Once something bad happens, bam, video games get blamed for the occurrence. Why not blame hot dogs for causing murder because some serial killers have eaten them before.

I agree with many prior posters that this isn't about a kid in a addicted stupor, stealing for his habit. This is a kid murdering another kid, lacking the cognitive framework that tells a person that a human life is worth more than some earrings. The game didn't do this, HE did this.

It's very easy to blame the games. But what about the kids parents? His upbringing? His environment he lives in? Or the mental state of the kid himself?

This story would end exactly the same if he was addicted to Skittles and wanted money to buy Skittles.
I'll voice their (in my eyes, incorrect) opinion here for the sake of the conversation and debate: but video games are more addictive than Skittles and video games teach children to be violent.

I need to stop reading these new articles here, they always remind me just how low humanity can seek.

Every now and then there are some uplifting ones like when the internet rallied in support to help that little girl who got teased over liking star wars but this is...

wow...
Mmm. I'm far from a bleeding heart (I'm pretty cold) but christ is this messed up. Did he really need to beat her to death? If you really are messed up and feel the need to steal, just steal. Sure, it's wrong and you're a bad person, but c'mon! She was seven! You not only stole from her, you killed her!

There are no words...

And now the little girl's family has her picture all over the world news and everyone is talking about how their daughter had her skull caved in...

Life can just... suck.
Here's a word: sociopath.

Games are not drugs, this kid was just messed up. When I can't play a game, I count my losses and move on like a normal person. No average, stable human being feels the need to kill someone over video games.

How can you get addicted to video games? I just find the idea ridiculous.
By realizing it's a pretty convenient excuse after committing a crime to go "hurr evil vidja games made me do it, i'm a nice guy really".

Do you want a serious answer? It's actually not that hard, considering the addictive nature of certain games. It's very much like a gambling addiction. Can you imagine what that's like? If you can, you pretty much got it. Drugs trigger your brain into releasing dopamines and other chemicals that make you feel happy (and other things). The thrill of gambling does this as well. Games constantly push you towards your next goal. MMORPG's are especially good at this. Extra Credits dug into this subject. It explains a lot.

Love how they pin this on video gaming. If he went and bought a book they wouldn't even bother to mention it.
