Shadows of the Damned Director Talks About His Upcoming Game

Massimo Guarini's next game will be "emotionally challenging" and about the same length as a movie.

After the less-than-successful launch of Shadows of the Damned, Guarini left Grasshopper manufacture to start his own independent studio, Ovosconico. The Milan-based studio announced today that it's begun work on its first game, an untitled "movie-length" project that will apparently poke at the sensitive bits of the player's psyche.

"All I can say is that I want to craft memorable experiences," he said. "There is so much more to be explored besides throw-away iPhone games and 40-hour long traditional productions. I think the best way for us to achieve our vision is to provide a rich emotional experience packaged in a movie-length time frame, and possibly sold at a reasonable price."

It seems Guarini is attempting to emulate the success of shorter, more adventurous games like Journey, Braid and Limbo. Of course the "possibly sold at a reasonable price" bit is a touch worrying. The pricing of indie games is hugely important, as many thrifty gamers still directly equate "value" with "length."

Guarini has previously stated that he thinks the industry's infatuation with newer, shinier technology is limiting creative freedom.

"I totally expect games to grow as an industry and as a medium. We're just not there yet; it's just a young industry," he told Gamasutra before the release of Shadows of the Damned. "So for now it's still very much software running, and that aspect influences a lot of the mentality of developers and the mentality of companies. You don't see that in movies right now because that's it, the technology of movies is 24 frames per second. That's pretty much all there is about it, so you can experiment with all the rest. So I'm expecting the same thing to happen in video games -- it'll just take some time."

If it's only the length of a movie AND $60 (or $40, maybe $20) it had better have an ungodly amount of replayablity. I don't care if it's Citizen Kane good, I wouldn't pay $60 (or $40, maybe $20) to watch Citizen Kane.

"possibly sold at a reasonable price"

That quote is hilarious to me, why would anyone say that? What an unfortunate way to phrase that.

It's like saying "meh, maybe i'll sell for what it's worth, or maybe i'll sell it for way more than it's worth"

Looking forward to it. I'd probably buy it even if it was like 30 dollars but only 2 hours long. I find a game I can finish in one sitting I often come back to far more than any other.

I wasn't a fan of Shadows of the Damned, so I'm not sure if I'll be invested in this. I'll give it a chance, but I won't necessarily buy it out right either. I also wanted to say that the comment about "rich emotional experience in a movie-length time frame" sounds like something that David Cage would say.

Funny, right? Promise something short and tell us maybe it'll be worth the money. lmao

Which is essentially how the video game industry does pricing these days.

Is our game worth $60? YES -> Sell it for $60. NO -> Add stuff until bloated, sell it for $60.

I almost never buy games at release day, so the difference between pricing it at $60 and $15 to me is just the difference between picking it up on launch day and picking it up two years later. Speaking of which, I still need to play Shadows of the Damned. Maybe next year.

I absolutely loved Shadows of the Damned, brilliant stuff.

...that's all I came here to say, I'm not sure how to reply to "We're making a short game and we might charge the amount it's worth."

I'm sort of interested in what he plans for his new game. My experience with the game was... kind of meh. Shadow of the Damned was mediocre imo and the lack of new game plus similar to resident evil 4 severely hurt it for me. In a game like this, a NG+ would have been awesome to use as an experiment for new weapons etc, especially since some of the weapons come in so late that they were pretty worthless

I was kind of hoping this would be about Lollipop Chainsaw, but this is an acceptable tradeoff. Emotionally investing, and as short as a movie? That's fine, as long as the price matches. I won't be shilling out $60 for a 2 hour game.

POSSIBLY? *****, if you're making a two hour long game you better not be asking for anything more than 15 unless it comes with a free blowjob and a cookie.

Double chocolate chip.
