[HEADING=2]Super Mario 63[/HEADING]

Super Mario 63 [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/498969]

I enjoy browsing Newgrounds for a fun flash game and every once and a while, a fantastic game emerges. Super Mario 64 is definitely one of those games that rise above the rest. It is very fun to play, has classic Mario story and gameplay and can last for hours. This is hands down one of the best flash games I have ever played.

Super Mario 63 is the same game as Super Mario 64 from a side scrolling point of view. You play as Mario, a simple plumber whose girlfriend is stolen by the King of Koopa's, Bowser. Bowser then smashes the power source of the castle and it is up to Mario to not only restore power to the castle, but also save Princess Peach. This involves jumping into magical paintings and finding Shine Sprites, finding enough of these will eventually lead you to defeat Bowser. It is a classic Mario story, but not all that original in the sense of storytelling.

The gameplay is very well done, Mario controls easily and there is no confusion about which keys do what. The layout is simple, up, down, left, right, Z is ground pound, X is spin and C is Fludd. One problem with the keys is it is very difficult to switch between Fludd while on the move, it would be nice if the Fludd and ground pound keys were switched. One of the biggest difficulties was the flying cap, I found it extremely difficult to control, turning around being the biggest problem. All in all, the game is simple and fun to play, and there are very few bumps in the gameplay.
The Fludd is an Awesome Addition, Very Fun to Use

There are a large variety of levels, ranging from grasslands, to snowy peaks, to deserts. All of the levels are very different; don't just expect the same level with a different background. Some of the levels are very well designed; the cave has many invisible floors, secret lakes and high climbs and is a joy to play through. The worst level however is the Boo Mansion, I find it extremely confusing to navigate and there is way too much backtracking. The Bowser levels are extremely difficult and frustrating, I found them way too hard to make my way through them. You will not be disappointed by the amount of levels; there are less than Super Mario 64, but still a large and fun variety.

There are a Wide Variety of Levels

The enemies are simple, yet effective; they aren't always a breeze to kill. The Goombas are the lowest of the enemies; they merely waddle around and wait to be stomped on, the Bombombs need a simple spin to kill. The Cheap-Cheaps can be rather annoying when trying to navigate underwater, if not careful around them, they can cause a lot of damage. The Boo's are extremely frustrating and annoying, some rooms had 5 or more and this became extremely difficult because they 1) cannot be killed and 2) they can cause damage even when hiding. I find that they respawn a little too quickly, moving slightly away from the defeated enemies will instantly respawn them, which gets annoying if there are a large amount of them.
The Boos are Extremely Annoying!

Super Mario 63 is a very well done flash game, the game is huge and there are very few problems. The game will occasionally have a slowdown, which on seldom occasions will make the game unplayable, but just stop playing for a few moments and it will be fine again. The levels are well done and the enemies are fun to stomp on, the game might be a bit too easy, but it has tons of replayability. This game is huge, lots of fun and will easily take you 2+ hours to beat the whole game. I would rate this game higher than my Gameboy sidescroller because of the levels are extremely varied and generally more fun to play. I highly recommend you play this awesome flash game, save your money buying that new Mario game and just play this!

This is my first review, I will greatly appreciate constructive criticism and thanks for reading!

I'm eying this game as a potential lecture killer. It would definitely play better with a game pad or as a WiiWare thing, but so far it's been a lot of fun.

Good review too. I don't see any glaring issues, except that you maybe have one too many pictures. In general, pictures are useful to break up particularly large sections of text, and you more or less have a "paragraph/picture/paragraph/picture" thing going on. Not exactly a bad thing, but it's a bit on the overkill side. My general rule is one picture for every 500 words.

Ok, I will remember that for next time, thank you!

This is the best flash game I've played to date. Shapsters, thank you for reviewing it: otherwise this gem would have escaped my attention.

Good review. I actually liked the multitude of images here, though that might be because they each make a good point about the game.

Started playing this yesterday, loving it! If it weren't so much like 64, I would easily count it as an official Mario game.

Thanks, I really hope people read this and play the game, it really is fantastically huge and very well done.

I wasn't sure about the pictures, but they went with the paragraph above them and like you said made a good point about the game so I went with having that many.

I couldn't seem to put the images on the right side, can you help me with that?

Haha, no problem, it is hard to stop playing.

Thanks for reading!
Thanks for writing, it's nice to see people make reviews on things other than main stream games and movies.

Thanks, the two reasons I reviewed this was

1) This game needs to be played because it is awesome, and

2) I am tired of all the damn Prototype reviews

Man this game is addicting! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I wouldn't mind seeing this as DLC for the wii, it would be better to use the wii mote like a classic controller. It's kinda a mixup of SM64, SMSunshine, and even some of the Paper Mario mythos and characters. Very useful review, thanks!

I actually kind of forgot to mention in the review that it is pretty well all of the Mario Games in one. It has the Super Mario 64 story, the Fludd from Sunshine, the spinning and shooting stars from Galaxy, the Graphics like Paper and the side scrlling of the olden days.

I remember playing this game last week. Now that I've read your review it reminded me that I never finished it. Thanks!

Good review too. I read the whole thing rather quickly because it was short and sweet. You got straight to the point which is always a good thing to do in reviews.
