After 18 years the next entry in the Shenmue saga is finally released! It is exactly Shenmue, for better and for worse. The English dub is glorious, you can ask everybody in the world for directions and nothing else, you can rifle through everyone's drawers and look at their towels and whatever, and you can buy capsule toys.

I've only seen a couple of hours so far, but I really like it so far. Bailu Village isn't really as Shenhua described in Shenmue 2, though. I think she said she needed to walk to the next town over just to buy medicine for her father, but they have capsule machines, an arcade, and for some reason guys running lucky hit booths all day... in a tiny village in the sticks. I don't know, it's weird.

Anybody else play it or want to discuss the series?

Im currently playing it. its ok. I played shenmue 1 and 2 first time last year when HD version released. and i was surprised that i liked them. apart from they can get boring because all you do is talk to this, talk to that.

although story is interesting. so i decide to continue with shenmue 3.

I don't especially care for this game or its series but what stuck out to me in the reviews is that the game doesn't actually conclude the story.

And I've been thinking, it already seems very optimistic to me to assume that people still want to play a Shenmue game in this day and age. But I feel like it's downright wishful thinking to assume they want to play multiple Shenmue games. He's planning for what, 3 or 4 more games?

Yes, Yu Suzuki is kind of a lunatic. I'll be shocked if Shenmue 3 sells enough to even get one more sequel let alone several. I don't know how many people would wait 18 years for the chance to wrap up their story and then decide that they are gonna take a gamble on getting even more sequels.

Yeah, I noted the same thing. This sequel almost didn't get made and was apparently supposed to wrap the whole thing up and...just doesn't.

Which is ballsy, sure, but the chance of seeing the end of this story is now seriously in doubt so if that's why you're here, I imagine there's gonna be some saltiness invovled.

Granted, I say this as someone who knows about Shemue from what I've seen on youtube and what people have said about it. I've never played any of them and I'm not sure if it's a game I'd be into.

Turns out my last humble bundle came with Shenmue 1 and 2 HD.... So....I might actually end up checking out the series.

That headscratch animation that the characters do where they hover their hand 4 inches over their head always makes me think they are Professor Stein turning their invisible headscrew.

Tying stamina to heath and forcing you to eat constantly to keep it at max is probably the worst implementation of a stamina meter I've ever seen. But I guess Ryo must be pretty hungry since he never ate at all for the first two games. Pure energy from your desire for revenge can only sustain you so for so long, I guess.

That was quite an ending! I haven't seen one like that since KotOR II. It was really strange how the game devolved into slapstick during the grand finale. I especially like the backer dorks as Lan Di's henchmen.

All in all I really enjoyed the game, I just wish it had more plot progression than none. So weird.

Thats ok. He'll wrap it up in like 5 more games over the next 50 years.

I'll just stick with Yakuza to scratch that itch, if need be.
Have you seen the demo for Yakuza 7? It's...different..
I should've been more specific. I tried to get in to Yakuza, but the combat does not work for me. I've seen 7, and I know it's turn based. I admit all of the wacky shenanigans that happens is hilarious, but I really don't like turn based rpgs. With that said, I'll take any of the Yakuza games a billion times over any of the Shenmue games.
