Shoot Zombies With Words in Zombie Typomaniac HD

All you need to survive the zombie apocalypse are fast fingers and a grasp of the alphabet.

One would think we'd seen every possible variation of the zombie apocalypse, but like the undead themselves, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/6768-Warm-Bodies>they just won't stop coming. Perhaps the most unique example was <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104092-New-Typing-of-the-Dead-Gets-Gamers-Jobs>Typing of the Dead, a House of the Dead 2 remake that replaced lightguns with keyboards. By furiously spelling out words that appeared on-screen, players could fend off slowly approaching zombies and live to play another level. It's a clever idea, but one that's remained pretty much dormant until the recent launch of Zombie Typomaniac HD. This new iPad title from GameYawp seeks to revitalize the zombie spelling genre with bigger hordes, massive undead bosses, and a comprehensive dictionary.

Zombie Typomaniac takes an all-ages approach to zombie killing with an art style more reminiscent of Plants Vs Zombies than Dawn of the Dead. That's not to say the game isn't a challenge, however. Each of Zombie Typomaniac's 28 story missions pit you against hordes of zombies that can be killed by correctly spelling the word above their heads. With dozens of zombies approaching at any given moment, players need to rush through the word list before being completely overwhelmed. Combine that with a difficulty that adjusts to your WPM and 24 different monster types (including double-word zombies and yetis), and you'll realize that the real threat isn't the zombies, it's the typos.

Zombie Typomaniac also comes with an unending survival mode and 20 unlockable outfits for its male and female avatars. It's already available for iOS, so anyone wanting to kill zombies and feel smart doing it can shamble their way to an online App Store.

Sorry, Sega's already done it, as you point out, and I think that there's not a gigantic need for a new genre of type 'em ups, though I would welcome such a genre based on novelty alone. Needs a damn HD re-release does this one:

I have a PC version somewhere but it'd be nice to see it elsewhere.

Edit: Oh and ninja'd, I just know somebody else wanted to post this (;

I'll just stick with Typing of the Dead thank you. Man I loved that game, this just seems very bland, and doesn't seem like it'd be as much fun.
Then again I despise typing with touch screens so I'm a tad biased here.

The only problem with the original was the fact that you didn't have to type spaces which caused issues if you were used to real typing.

Also, is anyone else bothered by playing a speed typing game on a touch screen? If this had a real keyboard I would consider investing but not with the crap typing that is touch.

Seems like everyone else is already thinking along the same lines as what my reaction was. Typing on a touchscreen is awful for something like this, and Typing of the Dead was already awesome. Sega, if you're going to keep re-releasing old Dreamcast games seemingly at random, that would be a good one. I know there's already a PC version because I already have it, but it's a little weird getting it to work on newer computers/OSes sometimes. I'd happily pay five bucks for a version that actually works and also fixes the glitches that were in the original port.

A typing game exclusive to iOS is a complete waste. I'd love to be able to play it on a PC with a keyboard.

I love The House of the Dead so maybe I'll give Typing of the Dead a try.

On iOS? Already been done. It's called [a href="https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/texting-of-the-bread/id389866044?mt=8"]Texting of the Bread[/a] and it's a lot of fun. I feel weird supporting the ScrewAttack guys though after all the crap they've done.

While that actually does sound fun and addictive, I a) don't have an iPhone and b) wouldn't want to play this with a touchscreen anyway. If it's released for PC, I might give it a look.

Well it all sounded cool until I got the details, iOS... what's next a console release?
And just in general it looks really poor, half the screen is a bloody keyboard, far too busy to work out what you are doing, and the sounds are all sorts of odd.

Someone should just make a Plants vs Zombies mod with typing and we got the proper thing.

Wow.... if anyone wanted more proof that Zynga was just ripping stuff off without actually figuring out what made it work. Here it is.
A typing game not on the PC? WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

Man, they need to make this for kids!
Did they miss an opportunity to help children (say, 9 and older) typing skills and the more important spelling skills? I'd pay a few bucks for a PC version of easy words, slow-moving zombies.

Colour me surprised. I thought I would be the only one that thinks the iPad is crappy for something like this.

Doesn't look bad though. Design is pretty bland, but the power-ups and strategy's to find ways to kill hordes quicker is brilliant.
