Hello Escapists. As part of my Engineering Design + Analysis course, we are to design and present a conceptual product which allows you to transport objects . We have opted for a backpack, which will contain certain features based on the results of this survey. Our main goal is to create a backpack which caters specifically to technology such as iPods, iPads, laptops etc., and have come up with features based on these needs. The survey shouldn't take very long at all and it'd really help me out.

Your short survey will allow us to design a more relevant product for the presentation, and will not take long to complete.

I have a spare copy of terraria to hand out at random to those who take the time to help me out. Game's good fun, but I already own my own copy so here's your chance. I'll do this by numbering the polls and using a random number generator decide the winner, whom will be PM'd and gifted through Steam. If response is good, I can close this as early as I get enough data to analyse, otherwise I'll close it when I need to use the data (24-48 hours from now)

If you own terraria already, you can choose anyone else to give it to(Can't gift to someone who owns the game already, found this out the hard way with Portal 2) if you win, and (Although perhaps redundant, given this is the Escapist) you need Steam installed on your PC to recieve the prize

Please fill this out and extra information or advice would really be appreciated, thank you.
If you travel to Work or School and carry electronics, would you say their physical safety (Due to water damage, damage from general force on your bag or damage to your phone as you take it out) is a real issue to you? (1-10, 1 being "Of little concern" and 10 being "Of great concern")
*
Are you at all worried about the potential to be stolen from your bag (In ways such as someone unzipping and removing your valuables when you are not looking)? (1-10, 1 being "Of little concern" and 10 being "Of great concern")
*
If you were to have locks on your zips, would you prefer locks which require a key (To be carried separately) or simply locks which are physically not simple to open (In a way that a thief would probably not bother trying) (You may answer Key or No Key)
*
Do you use head/earphones when travelling with your bag? If yes, then what size are they? (For example, just earphones or full-sized around-the-ear types)
*
Do you often find them [Headphone cables] to be tangled when you take them from your pocket/back to use?
*
Have you run into times where your phone has ran out of battery whilst out? Would a small emergency charger be of interest to you in this case? (1-10 on how useful this sounds) - It would work for phones, PSP's, DS's and other similar devices.
*
How about a laptop/netbook/tablet charger, which could provide roughly an hour of additional use (1-10)(Ignore if you do not carry any of these devices)
*

Thanks for taking the time to look; and if you fill out my survey, good luck with getting the game!

Woah, this is definitely enough information to get me some solid statistics down, and I'm taking your suggestions into consideration for the presentable designs, certainly! I'm closing entries now, and I will count the replies. I will then roll using random.org between 1 and the number of survey results, and whoever's survey corresponds to the number shall receive the game. I'll get right onto this.

Definitely including the suggestion for the high-strength dual-strap system to increase the durability under heavy load, and it's clear that the laptop system can not be a design feature that is included by default, given the mixed response of "I need!" and "No need!" - Amongst other suggestions which I will put forth to the team. Thanks a lot for your help.

Congrats to Bobbity

Yes. It's incredibly annoying D:

No, however this would be a great idea, so 10

I love surveys :D

Do you use head/earphones when travelling with your bag? If yes, then what size are they? (For example, just earphones or full-sized around-the-ear types)
*No, and i find that having a headphone 'hole' in a bag is useless. Media players sit in a persons pocket, or are strapped if running. It's a useless hole in which water can get in.

Do you often find them [Headphone cables] to be tangled when you take them from your pocket/back to use?
*Yes

Have you run into times where your phone has ran out of battery whilst out? Would a small emergency charger be of interest to you in this case? (1-10 on how useful this sounds) - It would work for phones, PSP's, DS's and other similar devices.
*Yes, but i don't feel such a product should be placed in a bag. Such a charger should be a separate product.

How about a laptop/netbook/tablet charger, which could provide roughly an hour of additional use (1-10)(Ignore if you do not carry any of these devices)
*Once again, this could be interesting if it did not add any weight due to a battery to a backpack. This also means that i can't be rough with that backpack and would be far more worried about water and such. I think this sort of thing is easily just superseded by carrying a charger or a second battery. However for niche markets like film students this could come in handy.

Device safety concern - 9
Theft concern - 10
No key
Yes, earphones
120% of the time
Emergency charge - 10
1 hour charge for laptops - 10

But couldn't you combine the last two things together?

We're considering a larger cell for the laptop, and adding it as a custom feature. Laptop cells are of a fairly high capacity, and our ideas for a phone charger (Which need comparitively none) wouldn't really fit into that. We don't want the thing to be heavier than it needs to be.

Yes, I HATE tangled cords. It bothers me so much.

10, my phone is a newer model so for some reason it uses more battery power with less battery space. I should really carry my charger. . .

How about a laptop/netbook/tablet charger, which could provide roughly an hour of additional use (1-10)(Ignore if you do not carry any of these devices)
IGNORED. If I actually trusted my school mates to bring my Laptop, maybe. That's still an iffy topic

Usually Just Earphones. Easier to drag around then full size ones.

All the time.

I don't really have any additional information to add, but I think you've got some good ideas going on here.

Wouldn't it be possible to have a laptop cell with replaceable cords? Just bring one cord for your phone, one for your handheld and one for your laptop... or something.

not really, but then again im good about how much force and water damage to my bag. I'll say 6.

Are you at all worried about the potential to be stolen from your bag (In ways such as someone unzipping and removing your valuables when you are not looking)? (1-10, 1 being "Of little concern" and 10 being "Of great concern")
I am, but then again Im a bit paranoid like that. no one's ever really stolen from my bag when its with me (and it always is if Im bringing it or its ina safe place if its not with me. this is actually why I have a good sized brinks lock on my backpack (also because I like to take it off and hook it to those people who have the huge rings in their ear lobes). really its a 6 cause Im not that worried, its just a habit cause its nice to have a padlock with you incase you need it.

If you were to have locks on your zips, would you prefer locks which require a key (To be carried separately) or simply locks which are physically not simple to open (In a way that a thief would probably not bother trying) (You may answer Key or No Key)
already have one. personally I like a key more just because its nice to have that key with you and you dont have to wrory too much about something like hoping a thief wont bother or forgetting the lock combo. so I'll say a 5

Do you use head/earphones when travelling with your bag? If yes, then what size are they? (For example, just earphones or full-sized around-the-ear types)
If its a road trip. the bag has really nothing to do with it. and I used wrap around hear buds 9the kind that wrap to your ear). 3

Do you often find them [Headphone cables] to be tangled when you take them from your pocket/back to use?
no, I use twisty ties 1

Have you run into times where your phone has ran out of battery whilst out? Would a small emergency charger be of interest to you in this case? (1-10 on how useful this sounds) - It would work for phones, PSP's, DS's and other similar devices.
Not my phone, but my DS. then again I have other stuff to do if its out of power. 2

How about a laptop/netbook/tablet charger, which could provide roughly an hour of additional use (1-10)(Ignore if you do not carry any of these devices)
4 just because Im not really sure if its a good idea and how long i'd have to charge that charger or store power for it. I cant imagine it carries its own self sustaining energy source. that seems rather dangerous and bulky.

Yes

The small emergency charger doesn't interest me very much because the only small device I carry around is my phone phone and I make sure to charge that every night, but I do run into people all the time with dying phones so it does seem like a useful thing to have for other people, just not me. 7
