Should Disney get into the video game business?

I heard they gave up entirely after Disney Infinity.

Activision has 17.45 billion USD in total assets. EA has 7.718 billion.

Disney has 95.79 billion!

Who would like to see them use their immense wealth to contribute to the video game world? They don't have to make E rated kids games. They could make M rated games and market them under a different label. They did it with Turok!

If you were them what kind of video game would you have your new studio make?

A action game with light RPG elements with a female protagonist in an all new fantasy universe to take on Zelda?

An World of Warcraft or Overwatch killer?

A sci fi shooter?

Or even an M rated military shooter?

Honestly, Disney really doesn't seem to have a good track record when it comes to making games.

Should they? Maybe. I'd like to see them exert control over Star Wars rather than EA.

Will they? Doubt it. And if they do, most of their work would likely be leveraging their existing IPs rather than creating new ones.

Yes and no. They should license their IP's to other studios. Like they did with Star Wars, but they shouldn't have given EA the exclusive license for Star Wars. That was a big mistake.

I'd rather not have Disney expand their control over media in general more than they already have, but taking a firmer hand to their own licenses probably wouldn't be bad.

Disney used to be in the games industry through a little something called Disney Interactive Studios, but they closed shop in 2016 after almost 30 years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Interactive_Studios

So I'm doubtful that they'll come back into the games industry, it seems easier to just hand out licenses to other people and let them mess around.

I think they should license out their properties, but go the South Park route where Disney's writers are working alongside the game developers. I mean, back in the day, Disney was one of the few brands where you could actually get a good licensed game once in a while, so I don't see why working with game creators couldn't work again.

Bump and a shout out for Split/Second, which is as close to a spiritual successor to the last great Burnout games(3 / Revenge) as we'll ever get.

This reminds me of an "ideal Disney games" thread I started a long time ago. I still stand by the idea I posed there. I'd want Avalanche Studios (of Just Cause and Mad Max) to create a Phineas and Ferb-themed Sandbox Beat 'Em Up with Stealth Elements where you play as Perry the Platypus in his day job as Agent P.

As long as it's properly supervised, given enough budget, and Dan and Swampy were to write for it, it should be amazing.

All I want is for Disney to greenlight a sequel to Stunt Island.

A flight sim sandbox that doubles as the ultimate movie making game with over 1000 props to use and the ability to put cameras anywhere to capture the action and export movies for anyone to watch? How has nothing ever surpassed or even attempted that again? Imagine this with better graphics and a smoother framerate!

According to the recent "In Bob we trust" episode Disney would probably not "go in to business" but rather buy someone who already are. So the question then rather becomes Which studio should they take over?

Didn't they already do that a few years back? Like, they did Split/Scecond and a couple other games, but most of what they did didn't really take off...

Forget studio, this is Disney. They could easily buy any of the big publishers and control all of the dev studios that publisher works with. They could and should just BUY EA. It would serve EA right... buying studios and then murdering them after wringing out all of the cash. Disney should return the favor... and I'd enjoy it if it didn't mean golden parachutes for all the people that actually make EA terrible and unemployment for those that just want to make games and keep a paycheck doing it.

That would honestly be so delicious. I'm not a huge fan of Disney's corporate division, but Disney EAing EA would be fantastic.
