Yes, I loved it and thought it was quite good. Over way too soon, though.
This I can agree with.

And I guess the story with the opressive government struck a chord in me as a Dane. The all to streamlined society where all information is controlled is too much like the one the Danish politicians are trying to create, so something about the idea of runners just worked for me. I didn't need to know why the government was evil, if indeed it is. Though I think any government that tries to control information is inherently evil. (Fuck you IPRED and Danish logging directives :p.) Just the control of information is enough to make me want to fight it.
But I guess that says more about me than the story itself. It just worked like a charm for me.
The city in Mirror's Edge was a nightmarish scenario for me as a lefty who adores anything that is different, ugly, strange and not normal. So I was ready to strap on the shoes from the first time I saw a preview of the game. And I still am. Fight the system! :p

Edit: Oh, and I completely forgot surveillance! I fucking hate that stuff! If anything can get me mad as hell it's prevention of free information and suceillance. Again, as a Dane it really strikes close to home. Morons want CCTV on the streets? I feel like crying.
I...umm...actually thought that the story was terrible. But the gameplay was so good that I didn't give a shit.

No. I got very bored of it after just 1 hour of play. If you can't even keep a player wanting to play a game for more than 1 hour then you shouldn't even think of a sequel. And I was pretty damn hyped up about this game.

The government isn't evil, they never said evil, the government is taking away freedom in the name of safety, nothing is private they monitor everything, messages that the runners deliver are the only things that aren't monitored, on one of the elevator rides it says that an unofficial poll revealed that half the city have used them to deliver something atleast once, so even normal ppl just wanting to send a private message use runners
Emphasis mine.

That is evil. No other word for it.

This... I really liked the gameplay, the way you controlled your character, the moves, etc. The city, story, universe, replayability and overall limitations to specific paths however sucked.

I would only be remotely interested in a sequel if it was called "Behind the mirror" or something and put you in the shoes of a government agent who gets to chase down Faith and do away with her in some satisfying manner. Never have I seen a more unlikeable, characterless protagonist.
Oh, and the game was the opposite of fun as well.

THey should ax the franchise and or atleast explain more of the plot, like why the GOvernment is evil
Did you miss the whole "Police state, surveillance, murdering political rivals" thing?

How does one perfect the genre of Mirrors Edge?

To me it seems like one of those games that just doesn't work.
Can't judge an entire genre on the first entry in it. All innovations are going to be a bit rough around the edges first. With refinement, there's no telling what we could get.

Was it a perfect game? No.

Did it have deep flaws that, for many, ruined the experience? Yes.

Should it be developed and improved upon? Absolutely.

There are as many things to like about ME as there are to dislike. I'm shocked however, to see so many categorical 'no's on this thread. The experience, when it works, is fantastic, even breathtaking - the concept itself is great. If the developers can learn from their mistakes and go at it again - using the time they spent before on prototyping and testing to, instead, create a better and longer experience, they could come up with seriously great games for the franchise.
Agreed, especially on the whole "great when it worked" thing. I mean, I had been having a decent time for a while, but was sort of on the fence. Then, I got to that part in the second to last chapter, where you have to climb up to where the sniper rifle was, and I was floored by how stunning it was. More sections like that could make the game amazing.
I agree, the purity of the platforming gameplay and, to a degree, the characters and environments just made up for some of less spectacular parts. I really appreciate the risk they took in this game, and going ahead with the sequel would give them a chance to improve on it. Combat was irritating, but the part you mentioned, plus the rooftop jumping was superb in my opinion.

Well, I didn't mean to say that you liked the story. :)

I just got a bit ranty and took off from you post. I loved the gameplay, but unlike a lot of people I also loved the story.

Yes they should. I loved the gameplay in the first game, and I only wish there were more of it (and with somewhat better level design and voice acting).

I reckon the franchise could benefit from a sequel, but only after some SERIOUS writing to have a truly engaging story, and, as everybody else has been saying, an open world. Most of the fun with the first game was just running around trying to get from point A to point B in the quickest time possible. Also, obviously, it should be longer. On my second play-through I finished it in 3 hours. That's criminally short for a standalone game. First time took longer, cos I didn't know how to solve all the puzzles, but even so, it's way too short.

It's a style of play that I really enjoyed and would love to see improved. So yeah, I'd like to see a sequel, but the developers need to put in some serious effort. I loved Mirror's Edge, but I know it could have been much better.

Mirror's Edge is one of the very few games that I think would be better in an open world.

While I enjoyed the first, flaws and all, it should be left there. The experiment is done, it achieved what it wanted to, all be it in a bit of a messy way and should now be left alone.

Unfortunatly when I look at the box I cant help but see that "EA" logo looking at me and can hear the "wringing everything we can from a fanchise" alarms sound in my head *sigh*

how is the city bad, did you not like the design or something, main story was bad giving you that, universe is awesome(though they need to explain more of it so idiots can understand it), as for the replayability time trials speed runs, and it is fun to play the game again, much like the original sonics and you weren't as limited as you think you are, but it could use an open level system I think, open world would be too much

The city is just too shiny, and every building looks exactly the same.. theres no real variety, thats what I dont like about the city... Also, how can you say that the universe is awesome? We know basically nothing about it from the game, its like they just said "Government is bad, carrying bags and killing cops is good", theres no lore, no information you can find by exploring, nothing.

And sure, you have the time trials, but how many times can you do that 40 second level just so you can squeeze .01 second from your previous record before you get bored?
Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is awesome, and the controls are great (at least on PC), but the single player just feels unfinished and rushed. The time trials and downloadable time trial maps just don't cut it.

A similar game on the same engine made by a totally different company could be 10x better. (Like Fallout 3 compared to Hellgate London)

In my opinion: Mirror's Edge 2? Probably no. New game with the same concept but more time spent on it? hell yes!

For some unexplained reason the government is totally evil, man! And there are a bunch of people who run around delivering messages.
The government is evil because they try to control the citizens by monitoring them all the time. The bunch of people that run around try to deliver messages to those that wanna learn about their family/ friends etc. They already give that away in the trailers...

And, as far as I know, they already stated that they are working on another game. ME will be a trilogy apparently. I'm glad, to be honest.
Wow, that's really... lame. God, the whole story is so stupid. They really should just stick with the time trial levels. Way more fun than the story mode.

The core concept of Mirrors Edge is flawed.
I'm guessing you played it on console? On PC, it was an extremely fun breeze executed almost perfectly.

And yes, a sequel is a good idea, it would give them a chance to fix the ineffective combat (or eliminate it altogether), and iron out those damn elevators...

I'd like a second one If they went back to the drawing board and redid it. Faith seems like an interesting character. I'd like to see more of her. The concept is good but it really needs a lot of work done.

Add a poll if you can.
