First world problem, right? Still my right hand has swollen up into a comical clown fist. Between office work and a gaming hobby my doctor says I have tendonitis. No using a mouse, typing, or videogames for several days (yes, I'm typing with my left.) I'm taking some time off work starting next week anyway, so wearing a brace at work until then. When it heals I've got some stretching and therapy to do. Anyone else have any videogame injury stories?

I'm competitive with fighting games and play on a Dpad so my left thumb has a permanent callus and is visibly larger than my right thumb. Doesn't hurt or anything so I wouldn't count it as an injury but it did sting a bit when I started before it hardened properly and if I don't play for a while it will of course eventually peel off and I'll have to reform it which will sting again. It's kinda like the calluses you get from playing the guitar. (which is funny since fighting games and music have a ton in common)

Outside of that, back in the day when budokai games were the best dbz gaming one could have, I tore the skin off of the palm of my hand during those beam clashes that require you to spin the analogues as fast as possible. Not sure if it literally tore off or if it was burned off from the heat that was generated through the friction. At least I won the beam struggle though XD.

I forget what he was playing, but when my younger cousin was about 12 or so, he got so made that he punched his wall fracturing two fingers.

And personally, whilst playing the Tiger Challenges in one of the last decent installments of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise, I got frustrated, and went to slam my fist into the wooden frame of my glass-top coffee table, but missed the wood, and slammed my hand into and through the glass. Fortunately, It was only a couple small cuts on my hand, but the next day, I stepped on a large sliver of the glass I?d missed, and THAT cut hurt like sonuvabitch. It was to the knuckle under my foot where the ball meets the toes, so not only was it tender, but it re-opened multiple times over the couple of weeks it took to heal.

I'd classify the former as a salt related injury as opposed to a gaming related one lmao.

First of all I salute you! Wear that injury like you would a badge of honor. Back in the SNES days I would get pretty bad blisters on my thumb due to all those repetitive Hadoukens I would release while playing SFII. During the early 2000s I got something similar to carpel tunnel as well as trigger finger from jamming on the Guitar Hero. All worthy injuries that I would not trade proper health for.

All the waggle in Skyward Sword kind of made my wrist hurt for a couple days.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I do occasionally hurt my hand with the mouse when I do too much smite or something without much down time. Usually it means I let my right hand rest and use a second mouse with my left and tone down the gaming for a bit.

Although recently I did have an injury that I hadn't in a long time. I was messing with a new phone game that made me scrunch my thumbs more then I thought and the next day they really hurt, again, just needed to change how I held the phone and be careful for a few days.

I have a very similar problem at the moment (tendonitis in the flexor tendons of my right hand), though my case it sounds like its not as bad as yours, but I've had mine for a few weeks now. I've been playing turn based games so that I can take lots of breaks to stretch and massage my wrist, plus I only play for an hour or two at a time. I just finished Divinity Original Sin 2, and I've just started playing Battletech (2018).

Time to switch to a controller maybe?

I find if the game has frantic button mashing to accomplish something, I can't really do it without significant pain in my wrist, and usually elbow/shoulder. I have this little twitchy spasm thing I can do to press the button really quick, and when I was younger it was perfect for such games. However, in my 40s, it's just pure, burning pain to try and sustain it as long as games want me to for whatever the action is. Which is why I LOVE the games that have the option to switch that out for "Hold button" instead. So much nicer on my limbs.

Not really an injury I suppose.

I'm pretty unfit. Back in the day when arcades were still cool, the local arcade place had some new lightgun games. It was a Japanese police one that tracked your entire body. This was before the days of the Kinect, so it seemed pretty cool at the time. You could physically dodge/avoid bullets and had to physically move to take cover.

I played it for an extended period of time. The next day my whole body was cramping up from the muscle pain.

Unfortunately even that was frowned upon. And then it got even worse. A cyst formed (not unusual for tendonitis) and then ruptured. Then my hand encountered something I'm allergic to, and the ruptured cyst got infected into an abscess. I had to have it aspirated (cut open rather than just lanced) and a round of antibiotics. And as if that wasn't enough, turns out the rash from the allergy has become dermatitis...

In short, if there was the possibility of a complication... I got it. And still have the comical clown fist. But the tendonitis that started it all seems to have cleared up, so I have resumed gaming... with a controller. As is my preference with most games other than first person games anyway.

It counts. I did something similar chaperoning my nieces' birthday lock-in at a laser tag place. Turns out playing laser tag for 6 hours straight with a bunch of 13 year olds when you are almost 40 and not in great shape has consequences. Still, until I started sandbagging to be fair I was blasting the crap out of the little bastards.

Jeez, well at least you can game now. That's all that really matters in the end.

On the odd occasion that I go paintballing, I end up getting washed out the following day too. But I was in my teens with the lightgun game and my paintball ventures were in my 20s. I've hit my 30s now so I wonder how my body would react. I really should fit in some exercise somewhere in my life.
